 Hellingly Community Primary SchoolStars Class Term 3 NewsletterHow have explorers changed our thinking? In our enquiry this term will look at important explorers including Sir Ernest Shackleton. Children will be given the opportunity to explore further adventurers in history including: Christopher Columbus, Scott and Amundsen, and Neil Armstrong. Children will be looking at the human and physical features of polar regions. We will cover the use of maps and atlases to follow the routes taken by these explorers by understanding coordinates and compass points. 4762647626In Science we will be looking at how light travels in straight lines. We will link this to the time zones and create periscopes. We will also be studying the animals which live in these harsh environments and how they have adapted over time to survive. In term 3 we will cover: FractionsGeometry position and direction Decimals Please support your child at home by using TT Rockstars and revising use of the four operations Helpful websites: remember to write in your child's reading record each time you hear them read at home. Reading records will be checked weekly by the class TA. Ask your child comprehension questions to help them develop their understanding of the text. For example:How do you know that character feels like this?What evidence can you find to show this?Which word shows this….?Can you find any similarities/ differences? Why do you think the author has chosen to write it like that? This term our class novel is Shackleton’s journey. The story retells his expedition crossing the Antarctic from one pole to the other. SpellingsImportant DatesYour child will receive weekly spellings taken from the Hellingly spelling overview. These spelling words can be found on our class page. We will look at the spelling patterns and exceptions during lessons. These will be uploaded to the website on a Monday and be tested the Following Monday. Please continue working through the year 5 and 6 spelling wordlists at home. Children will be encouraged to use these words in their daily writing. These words will be picked up in their writing in class.
