N EMA TYPE 1 . General Purpose - Type 1 enclosures are int ended for use indoors, prim arily t o prevent accidental contact of personnel with the enclosed equipm ent, in areas where unusual service condit ions do not exist . See Part I CS 1- 108. I n addit ion, t hey provide protection against falling dirt.

N EMA TYPE 2 . Dripproof- I ndoor - Type 2 enclosures are int ended for use indoors t o prot ect t he enclosed equipm ent against falling non- corrosive liquids and failing dirt . They shall have provision for drainage. I f provision is m ade for the entrance of conduit at the t op, it shall consist of a conduit hub or t he equivalent . When com plet ely and properly installed, these enclosures shall prevent the entrance of dripping liquid at a higher level than the lowest live part within the enclosure.

N EMA TYPE 3 . Dust t ight , Raint ight and Sleet - ( I ce- ) Resist ant - Out door - Type 3 enclosures are int ended for use out doors t o prot ect the enclosed equipm ent against windblown dust and wat er. They are not sleet - ( ice- ) proof. They shall have conduit hubs or equivalent provision for wat ert ight connect ion at the conduit ent rance, m ount ing m eans external to the equipm ent cavity, and provision for locking.

N EMA TYPE 3 R. Rainproof and Sleet - ( I ce- ) Resist ant - Out door - Type 3R enclosures are int ended for use outdoors to protect the enclosed equipm ent against rain and m eet the requirem ent s of Underwrit ers' Laborat ories, I nc., Publicat ion No. UL 508, applying t o " Rainproof Enclosures." They are not dust - , snow- , nor sleet ( ice- ) proof. They shall have conduit hub or equivalent provision for watertight connection at the conduit entrance when the conduit enters at a level higher than the lowest live part, provision for locking, and provision for drainage. When com pletely and properly installed, these enclosures shall prevent the entrance of rain at a level higher than the lowest live part.

N EMA TYPE 3 S. Dust t ight , Raint ight and Sleet - ( ice- ) Proof- Out door - Type 3S enclosures are int ended for use out doors t o prot ect the enclosed equipm ent against windblown dust and water and to provide for its operation when the enclosure is covered by external ice or sleet . These enclosures do not prot ect t he enclosed equipm ent against m alfunction resulting from internal icing; where this is a requirem ent, the apparatus m anufact urer should be consult ed. These enclosures shall have conduit hubs or equivalent provision for wat ert ight connect ion at the conduit ent rance, m ount ing m eans external to the equipm ent cavity, and provision for locking. I n addition, they shall have sleet- ( ice- ) proof operating m echanism s, the ability to support the additional weight of the ice, and the ability to withstand rem oval of the ice by a hand tool to perm it access to the enclosure interior.

Wat ert ight and Dust t ight - I ndoor and Out door - Type 4 enclosures are int ended for use indoors or out doors t o prot ect t he enclosed equipm ent against splashing wat er, seepage of water, failing or hose directed water, and severe external condensation. They are sleet - resist ant but not sleet - ( ice- ) proof. They shall have conduit hubs or

N EMA TYPE 4 X.

Wat ert ight , Dust t ight and Corrosion- Resist ant - I n door and Out door - Type 4X enclosures have t he sam e provisions as Type 4 enclosures and, in addit ion, are corrosion- resistant.

N EMA TYPE 5 . Superseded by Type 12 for Cont rol Apparat us.

N EMA TYPE 6 .

Subm ersible, Wat ert ight , Dust t ight and Sleet - ( I ce- ) Resist ant - I ndoor and Out door Type 6 enclosures are int ended for use indoors or out doors where occasional subm ersion is encount ered. They shall prot ect t he enclosed equipm ent against a static head of water of 6 feet for 30 m inutes, dust, splashing or external condensation of non corrosive liquids, falling or hose- directed water, lint and seepage. They are not sleet - ( ice- ) proof. They shall have conduit hubs or equivalent provision for wat ert ight- connect ion at the conduit ent rance and m ount ing m eans external to the equipm ent cavity.

Class 1, Division 1, Group A, B, C or D- I ndoor Hazardous Locat ions- Air- break Equipm ent - Type 7 enclosures are int ended for use indoors, in t he at m ospheres and locat ions defined as Class 1, Division I and Group A, B, C or D in t he Nat ional Elect rical Code. The let t er or let t ers A, B, C or D which indicat e t he gas or vapor atm ospheres in the hazardous location shall appear as a suffix to the designation " Type 7" t o give t he com plet e NEMA designat ion and correspond t o Class 1, Division 1, Group A, B, C or D, respect ively, as defined in t he Nat ional Elect rical Code. These enclosures shall be designed in accordance wit h t he requirem ent s of Underwrit ers' Laborat ories, I nc., " I ndust rial Cont rol Equipm ent for Use in Hazardous Locat ions," UL 698, and shall be m arked t o show t he Class and Group let t er designat ions.

These enclosures shall prevent t he ingress of explosive am ounts of hazardous dust . if gasket s are used, they shall be m echanically attached and of a noncom bustible non deteriorating, verm inproof m at erial. These enclosures shall be designed in accordance wit h t he requirem ent s of Underwrit ers' Laborat ories, I nc., Publicat ion No. UL 698, and shall be m arked t o show t he Class and Group let t er designat ions.

N EMA TYPE 1 0 . MESA ( Form ally Bureau of Mines) Type 10 enclosures shall be designed t o m eet t he requirem ent s of Schedule 2G ( 1968) of t he Mining Enforcem ent Safet y Adm inist rat ion, U.S. Depart m ent of t he I nt erior, for equipm ent t o be used in m ines wit h at m ospheres containing m et hane or natural gas, with or wit hout coal dust. Addit ional inform at ion m ay be found in Bullet in 541 and I nform at ion Circular 8227.

N EMA TYPE 1 1 . Corrosion- resist ant and Dripproof- Oil- im m ersed- I ndoor - Type 11 enclosures are corrosion- resistant and are intended for use indoors to protect the enclosed equipm ent against dripping, seepage and ext ernal condensat ion of corrosive liquids. I n addit ion, t hey prot ect t he enclosed equipm ent against t he corrosive effect s of fum es and gases by providing for im m ersion of t he equipm ent in oil. They shall have conduit hubs or equivalent provision for wat ertight connect ion at the conduit entrance and m ounting m eans external to the equipm ent cavity.

N EMA TYPE 1 2 . I ndust rial Use- Dusffight and Dript ight - I ndoor - Type 12 enclosures are int ended for use indoors to protect the enclosed equipm ent against fibers, flying, lint, dust and dirt , and light splashing, seepage, dripping and ext ernal condensation of noncorrosive liquids. There shall be no holes t hrough t he enclosure and no conduit knockout s or conduit openings, except t hat oil t ight or dust t ight m echanism s m ay be m ounted through holes in the enclosure when provided with oil- resistant gaskets. Doors shall be provided with oil- resistant gaskets. I n addition, enclosures for com bination controllers shall have hinged doors, which swing horizontally and require a t ool t o open. When int ended for wall m ount ing, Type 12 enclosures shall have m ounting m eans external to the equipm ent cavity, captive closing hardware, and provision for locking.

N EMA TYPE 1 3 . Oilt ight and Dust t ight - I ndoor - Type 13 enclosures are int ended for use indoors prim arily to house pilot devices such as lim it switches, foot switches, pushbuttons, selector switches, pilot lights, etc., and to protect these devices against lint and dust, seepage, ext ernal condensat ion, and spraying of wat er, oil or coolant . They shall have oil resistant gaskets and, when intended for wall or m achine m ounting, shall have m ount ing m eans ext ernal t o t he equipm ent cavit y. They shall have no conduit knockout s or unsealed openings providing access int o the equipm ent cavit y. All conduit openings shall have provision for oiltight conduit entry.
