Classen School of Advanced Studies Parent NotesWelcome to the weekly newsletter for our Classen SAS family! In an effort to continue to improve communication, we are asking sponsors to submit all activities for the week and share information regarding the happenings at our school. The PTSA will continue to send the Classen Blast as well.**IMPORTANT**13 Reasons Why is a Netflix series that students across the country are watching. In the series, a teenage girl records 13 cassette tapes documenting the reasons why she chooses to die by suicide. The series discusses many serious topics, including suicide, rape, teen drinking, drunk driving, bullying, and violence. The series has become popular and many of our students have watched it.Please speak with your student about this topic, and about the show. If students are watching the show, please consider watching with them and discussing the topics. The Today Show did a segment on the series and the link is included below:Teachers warn parents about Netflix suicide series ’13 Reasons Why’ issues are increasing as spring arrives! Students are to report to every class, including advisory. Failure to attend classes has resulted in truancy officers reviewing attendance for some students. Truancy officers have access to student attendance without the school providing that to them. When the officer comes to the school, they are calling students to discuss attendance. Please discuss with your child the importance of attending every class.Enrollment for 2017-2018 is being reviewed and a master schedule made to try to meet as many needs as possible for all students. Any current SOPHOMORE or JUNIOR that would like to take a Visual and Performing Arts Internship next year should see Dr. Davis asap. The internship will give back to our OKCPS elementary schools by allowing our upper classmen to teach students in schools where the arts have been cut due to budget constraints. We implemented this in our school this year with tremendous success! Our VPA students taught our autistic students and everyone learned and grew so much! The Caring Van will be at CSAS Friday, May 5th! 7th grade is required to have Tdap upon entering school. Seniors are usually required to have a meningitis vaccine before college. Many of our other students would benefit from the few other recommended vaccines that are not required. Please call the school clinic with questions. Clinic Direct # 587-5478. Research shows that attendance in class greatly impacts student success.Attendance is calculated for middle and high school.Promote a clean campus. The art department has created and hung posters promoting cleanliness on our campus. Students have been doing a wonderful job being aware of the campus and taking ownership in keeping it clean.Improve dress code compliance. Please assist the school to improve our compliance with dress code. The district has allowed Classen SAS to have a dress code and not a uniform. Please make sure to send your student to school in the appropriate attire. The school dress code can be found on the website. Improve student support systems.Advisory has been implemented this school year. It serves several purposes: Announcements are delivered during advisory to protect instructional time during first period.Counselors are able to meet with groups of students during this time to not interrupt instructional time.No classes are being held during the lunch/advisory or advisory/lunch hour so that no classes are interrupted.Grade level specific instruction or information may be delivered to students during this time.Appreciate staff, students, parents and patrons.Thank you to PTSA for providing monthly treats to the staff!PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is being implemented this school year. It impacts all of our goals as we are making attempts to provide positive reinforcement to students making good choices. Students in dress code were given random Taco Bell certificates. This is a continuous process and the school welcomes parental suggestion for rewards when students are “caught doing the right thing”.Parent volunteers are sought to hang bulletin boards to display success data.Artistic and Academic Excellence are the norm.Excellence is our day to day expectation. Our students are amazingly talented people that we celebrate and push to continue their path toward artistic and academic excellence.Student Engagement is our school practice where we are placing focus.
