Some?basic reminders?and a few more steps can make it safer and more comfortable. Here are some of Chuck's recommendations.Be?Visible -?Use effective front and back lights. Lit and reflective ankle bands are good. A colored and reflective jacket helps.Be?Predictable?- Follow the usual right of way rules of the road. If turning left from a multi-lane road, use the right-hand most lane that goes in the direction you are going; otherwise, go past the intersection and wait to cross as a pedestrian would.Be?Alert?- Know everything around you and what might be occurring.Be?Assertive?- Communicate your intent, such as keep pedaling when biker has intersection right away so driver knows you are claiming it (even though you may have your fingers on the brake levers ready to stop quickly), and ride as far to the right as is practical (not necessarily as far to the right as possible), e.g., claim your lane if it is too narrow for a car to safely (and legally) pass with 3’ of clearance without changing lanes (this helps keep you more visible, too).Clothing?can be modified to include wearing a neck gator, dressing in layers with wool?being particularly good for wicking away moisture, and with a windshell on the outside (ideally with vents to moderate temperature). Waterproof hiking boots with wool socks keep the feet comfortable. Pants with flannel lining allow for more warmth but are not too warm to wear at work. An 18?-micron wool t-shirt works will wick moisture away and?works well under business attire. Switch up the helmet to be a ski/snowboard helmet which allows (over the glasses) goggles to be worn. A thermal face mask (balaclava) is great for the coldest of weather.Bike equipment?includes?fenders which will help keep splashing to a minimum. Slightly wider tires are useful. Studded tires?with?cleats?will give maximum traction on ice. Really good gloves are a must. A bike rack, basket or?pannier is good for hauling your ?will help keep your body from overheating. The bike chain should be cleaned (or at least lubricated) a bit more frequently in the winter (or consider a belt drive bike). In Europe, and some parts of the U.S.,?"city bikes"?can be bought which have all winter bike?equipment one needs. Do remember you can do your bike adjustments at the?UW Bike Center?next to the Memorial Union.Wisconsin Union Theater's Heather Good bikes to work year-round and picking the best routes to avoid heavy traffic.Winter biking is very doable and is one more way to help get that 4 to 5 days of cardiovascular fitness per week into your schedule.?
