Mission Statement

Vision: All Nevadans ready for success in a global 21st Century. Mission: To improve student achievement and educator effectiveness by ensuring opportunities, facilitating learning, and promoting excellence.

Superintendent's Highlights

- For the first time since taking the ACT became a high school graduation requirement four years ago, Nevada's average composite scores rose in math, reading, and English reflecting an increase in our combined score from 17.4 last year to 17.5 in 2018 and the College Ready benchmark increased one point from last year to 11 percent.

- All Nevada third through eighth grades improved their Smarter Balanced math assessment results from last year. Carson, Churchill, Clark, Elko, and Washoe County School Districts demonstrated the most growth in math. The increase in eighth grade math performance is partly attributed to the change in status of the End of Course exams that were taken by many middle schoolers. All grade levels except seventh grade showed an increase in performance on ELA results. Most districts saw improvement in their ELA scores as well with Churchill and Elko showing significant increases in performance over last year. Final complete Smarter Balanced data will be available with the update of on September 14.

- Nevada eighth grade students showed a 5.4 percentage point improvement on the 2017-18 science assessment over last year. Washoe County middle schools lead the state in 2017-18 science performance at 47.6 percent proficiency. This rate represents a 5 percentage point increase over the prior year. Eureka County high schools lead the state in high performance in 2017-18 as well as leading in improvement over their 2016-17 performance at 81.9 percent proficient. This rate represents a 21.9 percentage point increase over last year for this small group of students.

- While chronic absenteeism ? schools with students missing 10 percent or more of class - in Nevada is at nearly 20 percent, 105 schools in the state lowered their rate by at least 10 percent during the 2017-2018 school year.

- Nevada high schools posted their highest graduation rate ever at 80.85 percent for the Class of 2017 ? an increase of seven percentage points. Nevada's two largest school districts both outpaced the rest of the state with healthy gains. The Clark County School District graduated 83.22 percent ? an increase of 8.34 points. The Washoe County School District graduated 84.02 percent ? an increase of 7.38 points.

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1 - All students are proficient in reading by the end of 3rd grade. Goal 2 - All students enter high school with the skills necessary to succeed. Goal 3 - All students graduate college and career ready. Goal 4 - All students served by effective educators. Goal 5 - Efficient and effective use of public funds to achieve the highest return on educational investment. Goal 6 - All students learn in an environment that is physically, emotionally, and intellectually safe.
