Funding may be used for travel or supplies. Awards may be made for up to $5,000. The overall goal of this program is to foster the vision of NASA by encouraging career goals in STEM disciplines, strengthening the nation’s STEM workforce and engaging Americans in NASA’s mission. Students receiving awards in past competitions may apply and receive awards for subsequent competitions. Women, under-represented minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted any time.EligibilityStudent teams at institutes of higher education who are members of the Alaska Space Grant Program are eligible to apply. All students who receive funding must be U.S. citizens.Duration, and Amounts of AwardsDuration of projects is one academic year. A shorter duration, depending on the project, may be proposed. Awards may be for up to $5000.Assessment of ApplicationsEach application submitted under this program will be evaluated by the Alaska Space Grant Program director. Sufficient information must be provided by the student team to allow the director to make an informed judgment.BudgetAllowable Expenses:Supplies and materials: Include a description of how these funds will be used. If educational supplies or software will be purchased, list items, describe the need for the item and how it supports the program goals.Travel: List names of persons to travel, purpose of the trip, expected location, trip duration, and estimate of costs (airfare, hotel, meals, etc.)Cost Sharing:Students are requested to document and report other funds that supported their participation in the competition (such as funds provided by your department, student organization, or a sponsoring company.) Matching funds may be in-kind (non-cash) support such as donated supplies, donated faculty time, or donated time by a mentor or mentor organization.Specific Application Requirements and FormatComplete all sections of the Application Form including cover page provided.The application is available in an electronic format (MS Word) and can be accessed from the ASGP website at: Narrative (three page maximum does not include budget): Competition Description: Include a short synopsis of the competition. Please include the competition solicitation if available. Please address the major goals of the competition including aspects of the design challenge, organization of competitive events, technology and material requirements, space requirements and travel. Provide a timeline of the proposed period of performance including key competition dates and deadlines. Identify the milestones or achievements at each step which show the progression of the project. Identify any parts of your project that will need special attention or any special tests that will be used to evaluate your position of Team: Identify all student team members for the project. Provide detailed descriptions of each team members’ role and responsibilities. If a team member requires special training, please include how that person will obtain the skills needed to complete his or her portion of the project. Relevance to NASA: Describe how your team project aligns with NASA’s strategic plan. It is helpful to reinforce how the competition and your project supports NASA’s strategic plan by citing the relevant strategic goals. The 2018 NASA Strategic Plan can be found here: of Recommendation from Mentor: Letter from your Mentor who intends to mentor the team during the competition and award period. This letter should indicate the agreement of the mentor to serve in this capacity for the duration of the award as well as his/her expectations and responsibilities for the research activity you wish to pursue.Budget: Please provide an organized budget detailing how funds will be expended (see attached budget form). Costs may change during the duration of the award period, but efforts should be made to create and adhere to a budget that realistically accounts for project needs. Funds may be used for domestic travel, but not foreign travel. If funds are to be used on travel, expenses cannot exceed University of Alaska approved per diem rates. Provide a written budget justification including information on the source and use of your non-Space Grant matching funds.If applying for continuation funds, a report on progress during the current project is required. The report should describe your activities during the current time period and an evaluation of the successful and unsuccessful components of the program. Documentation of any papers, presentations, announcements, new articles, and press releases relating to the existing project should be included in an appendix.Final ReportA final report will be required from the team, no later than 1 month after the competition. The Final report must include:Name of all participants, including gender, ethnicity, citizenship, etc (see attached form)Summary of competition resultsSummary of lessons learnedReport on non-Space Grant funds supporting the programPictures of team during design phase, building and testing phase, and competition (action shots preferred).Submit ONE compiled pdf file of the completed application packet. Submissions containing more than one file will be returned. If you do not receive a confirmation of submission within 2 business days, please contact the Space Grant office.Send the completed pdf file by email to: uaf-spacegrant@alaska.edu Subject line: Team Competition Funding Request Application Other Requirements Award recipients agree to: Students should plan to present a poster at the annual Alaska Space Grant Symposium. The Symposium is typically in mid to late April. Please contact the ASGP office for location and dates. Travel costs will be provided by ASGP. At the end of the award period, the team must submit a written report on their project to the ASGP office. A presented poster of their project may be submitted in lieu of a written report. Both the written report and/or poster will be posted on the Alaska Space Grant Program website. The report/poster should include results of the project and a list of any other presentations and papers published. Report/poster must be submitted within one month of project end date in PDF format.Notify ASGP of any changes in mailing address, e-mail address, or telephone number for purposes of progress reports.Additional survey/questionnaire documents will be sent periodically to student team members via email to conduct longitudinal tracking of students supported by ASGP funding. The longitudinal tracking survey/questionnaire in an on-line document and the email message sent to the student will give instruction on how to access it. This will also assist in improving the quality of the Consortium’s Fellowship/Scholarship program.Grant permission to release and/or publish requested recipient information to NASA or other appropriate parties.Acknowledge Alaska Space Grant Program support in any presentations or publications that the student develops as a result of his/her Space Grant-supported research project. This acknowledgement should state that: "This material is based in part upon work supported by NASA through the Alaska Space Grant Program (80NSSC20M0070).”Team members must make themselves available for interview by a writer for inclusion into the Alaska Space Grant Program newsletter.If funded, all team members must be able to provide ASGP with completed and signed demographic forms for NASA reporting requirements. If funded, the team must provide ASGP with a record of any third-party funding and support received.
