CREATION MOMENTS

Proclaiming Evidence for Truth

THIS WEEK'S CREATION MOMENT

Why Do We Smile?

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; – Ecclesiastes 3;4

Did you know it's practically impossible to laugh without smiling at the same time? Try it sometime. Oh, you can make laughing sounds without smiling, but you can't laugh for real. Well, if you're anything like me, you just might laugh out loud when you hear what evolutionists are now telling us about why babies smile and laugh.

According to evolutionists at Kyoto University, babies smile not because they are amused or because they are trying to communicate with their parents. Babies smile for the same reason that monkeys smile – "to facilitate the development of cheek muscles, enabling humans, chimpanzees, and Japanese monkeys to produce smiles, laughs, and grimaces." They add, "Spontaneous smiles don't express feelings of pleasure in chimpanzees and Japanese monkeys; rather, the smiles are more similar to submissive signals and grimaces rather than smiles." According to study author Masaki Tomonaga, "We can infer that the origin of smiles goes back at least 30 million years, when old world monkeys and our direct ancestors diverged."

Really now! Do evolutionists honestly expect us to believe this? There's nothing funny about evolutionary nonsense like this. The reason we smile – even when we're babies – is because God created human beings as emotional creatures capable of expressing an incredibly wide range of feelings. When's the last time you thanked God for such a wonderful gift?

SCHOOL UNIFORM COLLECTION

Donate school uniforms that your child no longer needs and make it possible for a child in Zambia to attend school. We are collecting used elementary and middle school uniforms for students of the Linda Community School. We will also accept used sneakers or walking shoes that the children can wear to school. Zambia law requires children wear uniforms to attend school, but most families cannot afford food, much less uniforms. The Linda Community School serves Zambia's most vulnerable and impoverished children, providing them with free education through 7th grade. To receive the free education, the children need to wear some type uniform. Donate your child's used school uniform to help another child. A collection box for the donations will be in the Gathering Space.

It’s time to register your child/ren for the 2019-20 Religious Education program. Forms are available on our parish website and in the Gathering Space

MARTHA AND MARY

A Gospel Reflection

by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

One spring morning I visited the pastor whom I help out in his office where his dog was lounging on an over-sized towel. All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the pooch stood and grabbed the towel and started twisting it into a spiral. Watching this, I just spurted out to the other human in the room that pooch’s behavior resembled my own on any given early morning. Pastor had a hearty laugh at that, but I was partly serious. In the midst of my morning preparations, I often find myself distractedly doing this or that instead of staying focused on getting dressed and readying myself for prayer.

Nearly every self-help book, program, DVD, or podcast say the same thing as your counselor or

your Aunt Louise, namely that “If you want to have a healthy lifestyle you have to set your priorities and stick with your decision.” Having the right priorities will lead you to experience balance, happiness and peace. The wrong ones only produce the opposite.

People today often complain about “running in circles” much of their time, with overly busy schedules and demands coming from all sides, not the least of which are those coming through their cellphones. Only when they choose to “stop and smell the roses” do they get a break.

The familiar gospel story of the two sisters Martha and Mary is often analyzed as one wherein Martha wears the “black hat” and Mary the “white one.” If you note carefully, Our Lord never sets up this characterization. It’s as if He realizes that He is dealing with two future saints, which both ladies became. The crux of the matter for Him is that one must listen to His word as the top priority for every one of His followers. Mary knew this and acted on it.

True, Martha temporarily forgot this. If you’re anything like me, I can be guilty of forgetting too. Martha had to be reminded that all her legitimate concerns about properly hosting a visitor, while good in themselves, are second to hearing the Word of God.

We all need reminders that our chosen priorities not be easily set aside. In fact, it’s precisely when a serious matter may be weighing us down that we need to listen to God’s voice more intently. We can’t always have a copy of the bible with us but God is always by our side. He “speaks” in a variety of ways and means.

Mary knew instinctively what to do when God was literally by her side that day when their Friend came calling. So she exercised a certain wisdom that only comes with a healthy set of priorities. But to her credit, we know her sister Martha also knew just who to turn to sometime later when her brother Lazarus died. Who can fault her act of faith when she finally caught up with Jesus and simply said, “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died”?

When asked why he had been so successful, former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry responded to a crowd of more than two thousand students at Baylor University, “In 1958, I did something everyone who has been successful must do. I determined my priorities for my life—God, family, and only then football.” (Cited in Dallas Morning News, March 2 1978).[pic][pic][pic]
