The Committee had a moment of silence and John Porter will be adding a memorial page to the new barn book in memory of the previous book’s co-author. The June Minutes were reviewed and corrections were proposed to be made to the final draft. They were in section II.a.i Aaron Sturgis’ name should read Arron Sturgis, section IV.b “Boscawen is looking…” should read “Boscawen Agriculture Commission is looking…”, and section V.d “…flooding in homes and basements” should read “…water issues in old homes.” Elizabeth Muzzey made a motion for the minutes to be approved with the corrections; Beverly Thomas seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Second Edition of Preserving Old BarnsStatus of Work John Porter is currently working with Deidre of Peter E. Randall, Publisher LLC to put together all of the text for the book and check on the flow of it altogether. She was able to piece together the newer materials as well as pull the older files from floppy discs. A rough draft has been formed for the book from start to finish. John called for volunteers to assist with the proofreading and editing. Deidre has also suggested to consider releasing the new book under a new title instead of it being a second edition. This suggestion was made to accommodate the many changes and differences between the two editions. John is working with Lowell Fewster to select barn photographs from his large collection for the book. John needs a couple more releases signed for the book, and has reported being well received by the barn owners to be featured in the new book. John has reported that we are coming to the point where we need to make fiscal decisions in regard to contracts and payments to people. Deidre in particular will need a financial commitment soon to be able to continue to help the Barn Committee with the book. John has also informed the Committee that the original quote may no longer be a good budget basis as it has changed so much since the project began over two years ago. Commissioner Jasper proposed having a limited release of a hardcover edition of the book for those that prefer hardcovers. It could be accompanied with a book signing event for the book’s release.Elizabeth Muzzey presented the financials involved with the book so far. Portions of the cost will be spread between the N.H. DHR’s Merciful Fund, a Mooseplate grant, the Park Street Foundation, and through private donations. The Merciful Fund has committed to providing a loan to cover the start-up cost of the book. The Barn Committee was awarded a Mooseplate Grant for $7,000 for the publication of the book and the distribution to the public libraries, Heritage Commissions, and Agriculture Commissions throughout the state. The Park Street Foundation is a private, non-profit that helps fund the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources projects, and has also committed to helping with the book project. Price discussion: The price proposed at the meeting was $25. This price should cover the overhead costs and have seed money for additional prints or new editions. Publishing deadline: Spring, 2019Next steps for the bookCristina Ashjian, Carl Schmidt, Beverly Thomas, and Elizabeth Muzzey volunteered to help with the proofreading and the editing of the rough draft of the book.Elizabeth presented to the Barn Committee a plan of action. Use the dedicated Barn Committee fund for money for the book project. Use Randal Publishing based on the working relationship already established with Deidre, as well as the results from the previous search done a couple of years ago for a publisher willing to take on this kind of publication. Use the Enfield Distributors for storing and distributing the books to the public. This plan of action will go the Commissioner of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Sarah Stewart, for approval. After approval is obtained, the publisher and distributor contracts will then go before the Governor and Council for review and approval. This process can take a couple of months to complete. Nate Merrill made a motion that we follow Beth’s proposal, Wilber Heath seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously approved. ?Tax Incentive Program (RSA 79-D) DevelopmentsThe Kingston Court CaseThis court case is going before the Rockingham County Superior Court in November. The case is to review the town of Kingston’s denial of request for tax relief under RSA 79-D for a member of the community. The plaintiff’s argument is that improper procedures have taken place and led to the denial of his application. He has asked the NH Preservation Alliance for assistance, which has provided comments and also requested the Barn Committee to provide a letter of support. Committee members commented on a draft of such a letter.Public Comments – none. Note: The Barn Committee meeting was then followed by joint gathering with members of the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance to discuss the future of preservation trades. Host Colin Cabot and associates then led a tour of the extensive restored farm structures and new facilities of Sanborn Mills Farm. ................
