DON and JUDY DEBOK visited DAVE and MAUREEN HUMPHREYS at their new home in Washington State after Thanksgiving and received a grand tour of the Cape Disappointment area. DAVE enjoys showing others the beauty of Cape D and the mouth of the Columbia River.

JACK MCGOWAN had a busy 2010. “Our 6th grandchild, Doston, arrived in March, child of Katie and David in Scottsdale, Arizona. Emily and Gary were married on the grounds of Webb Institute in June, thanks to the gracious hospitality of RUBE and REENIE OLSEN. Heather, as maid-of-honor, had to leave for DC immediately following the ceremony – something to do with the arrest of thirteen Russian spies! Then Dr. HENRIETTA took on an assignment in July to work with soldiers and their families in Germany for two months. She returned home for four days to repack, then headed to the UK to work with Air Force folks for another 1 ½ months.  I was able to steer a business trip toward Germany for a brief weekend visiting HENNIE in Prague.”

TIM JOSIAH sent a photo of four classmates who attended the US Coast Guard Innovation Expo in Tampa.  JIM HULL, TIM, FRED WILDER and TOM HAMBLIN were at the event in early November. “I tried to fix the picture to make everybody taller and younger, but I have limited capability on my computer at work.”

TIM CENNA sent the following: “After I went civilian, I worked my way up to VP of Research for a Fortune 500 company.  We parted company when they wanted me to do some unethical things, and I'm now working for Progressive Insurance at the top of their technical ladder.  I like what I'm doing and have no plans to retire.  SHARON and I split up four years ago, but I'm thankful for three great kids and two beautiful grandchildren.  I’ve included photos of me, my one-year old granddaughter Ashleigh, and grandson Matt at age three days.  Believe it or not, this little guy flipped himself over five times when he was eleven days old.  A future Bears wrestler!”

RON and MARIANNE GRETO are happy to have son Mike, daughter-in-law Megan and two grandchildren back in the same time zone. Mike received his MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona, and is now working in Boston. RON writes: “We flew to Boston Christmas Eve to spend the holiday with the grandkids. I thought we had seen the last of blizzards for 2010, but after 41 years I had forgotten about New England winters.  Fortunately, the Christmas weekend Nor'easter was perfect for trying out the kids' new sleigh and didn't have any impact on our flights, although I still prefer traveling in the front seat with the big windows.  Now if they would only let me pick the destinations. I’ve included a photo of us with Joseph (3 ½) and Giuliana (1) taken at Thanksgiving.”

GREG and PATTI SHAW took a Mediterranean Cruise out of Savona, Italy in late November to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.  Port calls were in Italy, Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece. The highlight was seeing the pyramids of Giza. GREG continues as a faculty member at The George Washington University and PATTI as the Director of Instructional Technology for the Manassas, Virginia School System.  The Fall 2010 edition of The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science’s Magazine Synergy noted that GREG was appointed to the board of directors of the Emergency Management Higher Education Consortium. GREG and PATTI are looking forward to at least partial retirement in June 2012.

I had a short Christmas card note from STU WHITE, who continues to pursue adventures in his post-employment life. “I didn’t make it to the Pterodactyl Roost in Jacksonville in November; I attended the International Tee Party—Brits against the Colonists in golf. First time they conflicted. I drove in another High Performance Driver Education event…spun out once, entered turn too fast and too early, ran out of track. A learning experience!”

Grandparent Updates. ANDY and ANN ANDERSON welcomed first grandchild, Harper Elizabeth Bogue, in January 2010. Daughter Kate and her husband, Bryan, live down the road in Miami, giving ANDY and ANN lots of opportunity to bond with Harper. JIM and PATTI DOHERTY announced the arrival of their eighth grandchild, fourth granddaughter, Ciara Leigh Doherty, second child, first daughter, born on June 22 to youngest son Dan and his wife Jia. GARY and NANCY PAVLIK’s daughter Emily delivered her second child, Cole Kneip, on June 3. GARY’s June e-mail mentioned that Emily was leaving active duty in the Air Force in October 2010 and would be staying in Texas and going into private medical practice there.

Classmates who are members of the Alumni Association received a letter in early December from RUBE OLSEN and JIM SMITH discussing support for making a class gift to the Academy’s Leadership 44 campaign from the Class of ’69 Gift Fund. JIM and RUBE recommended that the Class make a gift, which would be taken from our Class Gift Fund and additional donations over the next three years. As of this writing, I don’t have the results of the class vote for the Leadership 44 campaign, but I feel confident that the Class will line up in support of an Academy program (sailing) that is key to the development of Coast Guard officers and leaders. More on the progress of this Class effort will be included in future columns.
