Reformation Newspaper Project

The printed word was an important means of spreading new religious ideas during the Reformation. In this project, your group (3-4) will create a Reformation-era newspaper. The newspaper should have several required components, including:

- A title, including date, cost, etc.

- A cover story on one key event of the Reformation (400-500 words)

o Group of 3- 1 story. Group of 4- 2 stories.

o Provide specific details to explain who, what, when, where, why, and how. The event should be factual but reactions, quotes may be fictionalized.

- Two “Newsmakers” columns on important people from the period(200-250 words each)

o Describe each person’s background, accomplishments, and overall significance in the Reformation. Could be an interesting aspect of individual’s life, or a “gossipy” story about their life.

- An editorial(200-250 words)

o Choose an issue central to the Reformation, take a position on it, and use persuasive language to convince the readers of your view

- An advice column (225-250 words)

o Choose a famous person from the Reformation and write a letter seeking advice about a problem he or she faces. The problem should be a real issue this person faced during his or her lifetime.

o Answer the letter with a response from the columnist offering advice on how to solve the problem

- Additional parts of newspaper(Include at least 2 of these)

o A political cartoon on a Reformation issue or event

o A “Milestones” or “Obituaries” page for famous figures(200 words

o An advertisement (e.g., Catholic Church looking to win back once Catholics, now Protestants)

o A “Now and Then” feature comparing life before and during/after the Reformation (200 words)
