New Haven, Connecticut, once a thriving manufacturing center, has lost jobs and residents to the suburbs. New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) students are predominantly Black, Hispanic, and low income. The surrounding suburban school students are mostly White and middle class. To remedy the segregation of its schools and to improve school achievement, NHPS has developed 11 magnet schools since 2001 with support from the Magnet Schools Assistance Program.
For this grant project, NHPS will establish four new magnet schools that will serve both New Haven students and students from nearby suburban communities. The magnet schools and themes are as follows:
Magnet School Conte-West Hills K-8 Magnet School The Engineering and Science University Interdistrict Magnet School Hyde High School of Health Sciences and Sport Medicine Rogers- Brennan School: The Art of Communication and Media
Magnet Theme Exploration and Innovation Engineering and Science
Health Sciences and Sports Medicine
Communication and Media
Two schools, Clarence Rogers School (grades K-2) and Katherin Brennan School (grades 3-8) will combine to form Rogers- Brennan School: The Art of Communication and Media. RogersBrennan School: The Art of Communication and Media and Conte-West Hills K-8 Magnet School will be combination elementary/middle schools, and The Engineering and Science University Interdistrict Magnet School will be a combination middle/high school. Hyde High School of Health Sciences and Sport Medicine will be a high school. Each school is designed to attract a diverse, interdistrict population. The schools will develop curricula that align with state standards, integrate the school's magnet theme into lessons, train teachers, purchase and integrate supplies and equipment into the new curricula, have part-time tutors who will supply extra support in literacy, and inform parents about the new programs.
