Kudzu Sites Schedule For Treatment in 2018

General Site Information

Bar-1: Along County Road 600 S

Comments: This site is adjacent to an agricultural field and is not visible from the county road. There is also a home with children on the south side of the site, but the landowner wants the kudzu controlled. Access can be achieved via the field or easier by entering the property that is just south of the site. A driveway exists at this part of the site and access to kudzu is easy from this point. There are not any bodies of water near the site and erosion should be a low risk. There was some evidence of minor erosion on the west side of the site, but the site is essentially flat. This site was previously treated with Garlon 3 A in 2015 by a consulting forester hired by the landowner.

Soils: See soil maps in EA

Legumes: None present

Clk-4: King Road Area

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road and there are not

any bodies of water close to the site. Erosion may be an issue at this site. The field south of the site drains into the site in a concentrated flow. Very few trees exist at the site and there were not any legumes present at the time of site inspection.

Legumes: None present

Clk-4 King Road Area

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road and there are not

any bodies of water close to the site. However, erosion will be a major issue at this site. The entire field to the south of the site drains through the site in a concentrated flow. Erosion prevention measure will be needed during control efforts. Very few trees exist at the site and there were not any legumes present at the time of site inspection.

Legumes: None present

Clk-8: Martinsburg Rd, Borden, IN, Near King Road

Comments: This site is remote but accessible from existing trails on the property. There is not any surface water in the site or immediately adjacent to the site, but a creek is present on the west side of the kudzu site. The site is flat except for the southwest side of the site which is extremely steep. This part of the site exists on a cliff that cannot be easily traversed. The kudzu at this site would need to be treated with high pressure nozzles in order to get adequate coverage. Erosion should not be an issue at this site.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Clk-9: Charlestown, IN West Side

Comments: This site exists near the water treatment plant. The site is located primarily on city property, but some kudzu may be located on the private properties to the north of the site. The kudzu is growing up into the trees, but not covering the trees. Access will be needed to get through a locked gate but it is easily accessible from the road. Surface water will not be an issue at this site unless excessive rainfall is occurring. There is a dry stream at the site, but no water was present in mid- December during a period with abundant ground moisture.

Legumes: Robinia psuedoacia

Cly-5: Chinook Wildlife Area, between I-70 and SR 42, SE Corner

This site was a large 7 acre site that is nearly eradicated and only requires spot treating over a 3 acre area. Most of the area is covered by lawn now and a house exists at the site. A large lake exists on the east side of the site and care will be needed working near this part of the site. There is no longer an erosion risk and the site is easily accessible from the drive way of the existing home. Walking hazards and site access on the outer edges of the site may be difficult due to steep hills and brush regrowth of non- kudzu plants.

Legumes: None found

Cra-3: Magnolia, IN Magnolia Rd

Comments: This site is easily accessible from Magnolia road. A creek is located about 200 feet east of the site on the opposite side of magnolia road. There were not any legumes present at the site during the time of inspection. The site exists on a moderate tree covered slope. Erosion will be a minor concern, but should not be a major threat. This site has been present for over 30 years and has tolerated temperatures as low as 30 below zero in 1978. Site should be easily accessible for basal bark treatments and clopyralid treatments. Site has not increased in size in 10 years.

Legumes: None found

Cra-5: Zoo Road, English, IN

Comments: This site is quite a distance from the county road however, good field access available from both sides of the site. There are not any bodies of water close to the site and erosion will not be an issue at this site. The site is fairly large but the kudzu growth in the forest is fairly thin. There is not a dense mat of kudzu on the forest floor and growth exists primarily in the trees.

Legumes: None found at time of inspection

Cra-6 Allens Creek Road

Comments: This site is close to Patoka Lake. It is easily accessible from the county road. There is a slight risk of erosion at the site, but most of the kudzu exists on top of the slope. There is surface water across the road from the sites. Soils are very rock in because this site was once a quarry. The soil type in the area will need to be investigated to make sure that use of clopyralid will be safe at this site. The site is relative thin and very few trees exist at the site. Control should be relatively easy.

Legumes:

Cercis candensis

Dub-1 and 2: County Road 825 W, Near Holland, IN

Comments: Both sites are very difficult to navigate. They are located in a ravine with steep banks on each side. A dry stream runs through the center of the ravine and numerous small fish were observed in the stream. Erosion will be a moderate concern, but the potential for water pollution will be very significant with this site. There are numerous spring ephemeral plants at this site including, Trillium and Cypripedium. No legumes were observed at the site during the initials inspection.

Legumes: None found

Dub-3: County Road 825 West, Site C

Comments: This is a small satellite population located south of the larger site to the north. It is very small and immediately adjacent to a field and is accessible from the field to the south. There are not any bodies of water close to the site and there are very few trees located at the site. There is runoff and a concentrated flow of water that runs under the kudzu during rain events. However, erosion will not be a major concern at this site.

Legumes: none found

Dub-4: County Road 825 W, Site D

Comments: This is another satellite population of the larger site to the north. It is long and narrow is growing primary along an old erosion gully. It is not difficult to access, but may be difficult to traverse due to the depth of the gully. Water may be an issue during periods of wet weather and glyphosate may be necessary, but there are not any large bodies of water close to the site. This site is also accessible from the field to the south and is just west of kudzu site Dub-3. There is existing severe erosion at the site. The concentrated flow that exists in the center of the site is eroded down to boulders and possibly bedrock. This dry run has obviously been there for years and since the kudzu has recently invaded this area, there is little concern for new erosion once the kudzu is removed.

Legumes: Cercis candensis

Dub 5 and Dub-6 County Road 900

Comments: A timber harvest was recently conducted in this site and very little kudzu is left on the site. This site is easy to access from the state road, but it exists on a very steep slope. Much of the native vegetation had been removed in 2012 and bare soil existed at the site in late fall of 2012. However, there is still pockets of kudzu that will rapidly spread if left untreated. Control should be relative easy and the kudzu is only growing up a few small trees. There is not any surface water close to this site.

Legumes: No present at time of inspection

Flo-4: DNR Nature Preserve Property

Comments: An access road has been made to this site. However, two creeks must be crossed with an RTV to reach the site. Large vehicles will not be able to reach the site. Although erosion will not be a concern at the site there are two bodies of water near the site. A small pond exists on the north side of the site and a creek runs along the west side of the site.

Legume: Cercis canadensis and some Robinia psuedoacacia at site.

Flo-5: Woodland Drive, New Albany

Comments: This site exists behind a house in a wooded area. There are not any bodies of water close to the site and erosion will not be a major concern at the site. The site is easily accessible from the rear of the property. There are not many trees on the site but numerous other invasive species.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Gib-3: County Road 825 West

Comments: This site is located along the county road. There is a risk of erosion and parts of the site are extremely steep. The site is easily accessible from the road and there are not any bodies of water close to the site.

Legumes: Gleditsia spp. (thornless)

Gre-5: Owens Farm Road, Near Worthington

Comments: This is a massive site that is accessible from the farmer’s field. There is a locked gate and notification is necessary to gain access. A cow pasture must be crossed to gain access to the site. The site is essential treeless, but it also exists on a moderate slope that has serious erosion issues. Erosion control is being avoided by conducting treatments in stages. There are not any bodies of water or surface water issues at this site.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Har-6: New Salisbury, 668 Shady Lane NE

Comments: This site is located just west of SR 135 south of Palmyra, IN. The kudzu is located approximately ¼ of a mile behind the house on the property. It is easily accessible from the soybean field, but 4 wheel drive will be necessary to access the site. Erosion should not be a major concern at the site and there are not any bodies of water near the site.

Legumes: No legumes were found at the site

Har-8: Frenchtown, Baker Hollow Rd

Comments: This site is easily accessible from baker hollow road. It exist on flat terrain but there is a dry stream located on the south side of the site. There is heavy seed production at this site and very few trees. Erosion will not be a concern, but the close proximity of water may limit chemical control options.

Legumes: No legumes were found at the site

Har-13: Valley View Road NW

Comments: This site is located immediately along the road and there are not any bodies of water near the site. However, the site is on a farm that is a certified organic farm. This certified land is the landowner primary source of income. Pesticides cannot be sprayed on this land without affected the certification of this land. Alternative control techniques must be implemented at this site. Currently the landowner is mechanically removing the kudzu by mowing and mulching the site repeatedly. Erosion and water will not be a concern at this site

Legumes: None found

Har-14- Lambs Ridge Area

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road, but you must cross one small barbwire fence to enter the pasture site. However, there are numerous runners under the native field grasses and the kudzu is still spreading at a slow rate. There are scrubby tress in the area but not many valuable trees at the site. This site is on a moderate slope, with a moderate to high erosion potential based on the the type of soils that are in the area. There is also and old, dried up pond on the west side of the site, but water will not be a major issue at this site. No legumes were found at this site during the time of inspection. The parent site to this site may actually be located at a house approximately ½ mile north of the GPS location. However most of the kudzu at this house has been controlled with repeated mowing. This site has rapidly increased in size over the last 10 years.

Legumes: None Found

Jnn-6 West of Brush Creek Reservoir

Comments: This site is extremely difficult to access. It is nearly one mile from paved road. A narrow road which is part of the county road extends to a creek. At this point the creek must be crossed with 4 wheel drive and high clearance and then the site is located another .75 miles crossing rough roads and a corn field. Pesticide loads will need to be mixed on the opposite side of the creek and water will need to be hauled to the site. It will also be difficult to turn around any type of trailer or tow equipment at the end of the county road. The kudzu growth is relatively thin and exists primarily at the edge of the woods. There is very minimal risk for erosion.

Legumes: None present

Jnn-13 CR 125 West

Comments: This site is relatively flat and growth is thin. There is a moderate slope at some parts of the site. The site can be accessed from logging roads or from the field to the west. There are some fallen trees at the site because of a recent timber harvest, but not enough to make traversing the site difficult. There are not any bodies of water or surface water in or adjacent to the site.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Jnn-14: CR 450 South

Comments: This site exists on a power line right of way. It is relatively easy to access from the county road and navigation through the site can utilize the existing power line right of way. Surface water is not an issue at this site. A large portion of the site does not have any trees, but there is quite a bit of kudzu growing into the adjacent forest. The site has a moderate slope, but erosion should not be a major issue at this site since there is not a great deal of fetch moving into the site. Tree of Heaven and black locust was present on the southwest side of the site.

Legumes:Cercis Canadensis, mRobinia psuedoacacia

Kno-1: Vincennes area, Old 41 north of town

Comments: This site has been treated for several years by the landowner. Multiple applications of glyphosate have been made to the site over the last 5 years. Erosion is a major issue at this site and the soils are comprised of a loess type loam that is highly erodible. Numerous terraces have been made in the adjacent field to control water flow and redirect water flow away from the kudzu site. Much of the site will require spot treating but grass has been established in areas where kudzu is not growing. Most of the expensive erosion work has already been completed by the landowner and the USDA NRCS has provided assistance with kudzu control and erosion prevention work. There are not any bodies of water close to the site, but the erosion gullies do feed into the Wabash River which is about a half mile west of the site. All efforts must be made to preserve native vegetation and minimized soil disturbance. There are also grass strips that have USDA NRCS requirements that limit the amount of activity that occur on them. The site cannot be traversed to the depth of erosion gullies. It will be necessary to drive equipment into the field to avoid erosion gullies and protective grass strips. Some legumes exist on the west side of the site but most of the site is absent of trees.

Legumes: Robinia pseudoacacia

NOTE: Clover exist a cover crop in parts of this site and car must be taken even with Clopyralid.

Kno-2: Monroe City, IN near radio tower

Comments: This site is very easy to access and is located on a private property with access from the adjacent fields and lawn area. The site is essentially flat and there are not any bodies of water close to the site. Erosion will not be a concern at this site and there are very few trees present, but tree of heaven is the dominate tree species at this site. Some old equipments and tractors are alos present under the kudzu.

Kno-3: Monroe City, IN Near Dam Breast

Comments: This site is on the lee side of the dam breast. Water will be a minor issue at this site but most of the kudzu is growing on the side of the dam away from the water. Kudzu is not the dominate plant at the site and numerous trees are stablzing the earthen dam. Selective applications could be performed in order to maintain trees and prevent erosion of the dam. The site is easily accessible from the lawn area at the house. Erosion will be a concern at this site, but not a major issue since much of the kudzu growth is actually on flat area.

Legumes: None present during inspection

Kno-4: Monroe City, IN Near top of Lake

Comments: This site is the largest on the property. Water will be an issue as some of the kudzu is growing into an area that receives runoff which fills the lake. Some trees exist on the west side of the site but much of the site is already covered with grasses.

Legumes: None present

Kno-5: Old US Highway 41, Western Field

Comments: This site is a very small satellite site that has recently spread from the larger site to the east. The site is easily accessible from the agriculture field and there are not any bodies of water or homes close to the site. There is a moderate erosion risk at this site. The soils in the area are highly erosive and erosion is alreay occurring at the site. However, there because ther is such a small amount of kudzu, removal of the kudzu will not likely increase the erosion. The site is small enough to be spot treated with triclopyr.

Legumes: None found at time of inspection

Kno-6 and Kno-7: Old US Highway 41, Western Field A and B

Comments: Both of these sites are satellite sites from the large site located to the ease. There is very little kudzu at both these sites and a minimal amount of herbicide will be required to treat these sites. The farmer recently found these sprouting in 2017, so they are not well established. There are not any bodies of water close to the site and erosion will not be a problem at these sites. There are not any homes close to the site and they are easily accessible from the agricultural fields.

Legumes: None found

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Mrt-3: Near Williams

Comments: This site is located just west of the Lawrence-Martin county line. Roads to the area are gravel and extremely steep which will make travel to the site with equipment slow. Many of the roads in the area are also prone to flooding. The site itself is easy to access from the road. However, there are numerous fallen trees in the center of the patch which may make equipment access difficult. There are only a few legumes on the site and there are not any nearby bodies of water. The site is on a moderate slope and drains a large field to the north, therefore it will have a moderate to high erosion potential.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Comments: This site is not close to any county road. It is nearly a half mile from the nearest county road. However, logging roads exists on the property and lead directly to the site. There are not any bodies of water close to the site, but erosion will be a major concern on the south side of the site. The site will need to be treated in stages and erosion prevention work will most likely be necessary. The site is also difficult to access and traverse due to the presence of a large amount of multiflroa rose.

Legumes: Robinia psuedoacacia in low numbers

Org-3: North Side of Marengo, Ross Road

Comments: This site is relatively large and exists on the back side of a field. Accessbility may be an issue depending on the crop planted in the field during the time of application. There are a fair amount of trees on the site, but the site is not close to any bodies of water. There is a moderate to moderately severe risk of erosion at the site because the site exist on a steep hill. The amount of erosion control will depend on the native seed bank under the kudzu.

Legumes: No found at time of inspection

Pry-3: North of Cannelton

Comments: This site is immediately adjacent to the road on residential property. Accessibility should not be an issue and equipment can be parked long the site of the road for treatment. There are not any bodies of water or surface water near the site. However, the site is extremely steep with not much undergrowth occurring under the kudzu. Overseeding will be necessary and clopyralid should be used the first few treatments. Even though the site is steep, there does not appear to be a large fetch of water running into the site, so this will reduce but not eliminate the erosion risk at this site. Very few trees are present at this site and the site is primarily an open area. There are also some electric utilities at the site and care will need to be taken during treatment.

Legumes: None found during inspection

There are multiple dwellings on the site including mobile homes and trailers, however most kudzu is located away from trailer areas. Basal bark applications are recommended for areas close to the trailers. The north side of the site is steep with the potential for erosion. However, very little kudzu and an abundance of Johnson grass was present during the initial site visit in 2017.

Legumes: Robinia psuedoaccia (Black locust)

Pos-2: Ford Road

Comments: This site is located in a creek ravine behind a residence. There is a moderate risk of erosion at this site and the creek will require the use of glyphosate based products for adjacent treatment. The site is in a steep area, the landowner has existing trails that will make it easy to reach the site. The SE site of the site has an abundance of briars and multiflora rose, but the west side of the site is easily accessible. Clopyralid can be used at most of the site and stump treating will likely be necessary.

Legumes: None found during inspection

There is also some kudzu growing up the utilitie poles on the SW side of the site.

Soils and Endangered Species: See kudzu EA document

Legumes: White clover

Pos-5: Durlin Road, Area #1

Comments: This site is accessible from private roads on the farm road located behind the grain silos and equipment access should not be an issue. It is adjacent to agricultural fields. The site has been treated with Round-Up and Crossbow in the past by the tenant farmer, but he has had little success at eradicating it. This site has been there since 1974. There is a creek located on the northeast side of the site and erosion will be a moderate concern at that part of the site. Triclopyr TEA may be necessary if water in present in the creek. The rest of the site has a relatively low risk of erosion. There are not homes near this site.

Legumes: None present at inspection

Pos-6: Darlin Road, Site # 2

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road and parking in the adjacent field is available for equipment access. The same creek as in Pos-5 exists on the northeast side of this site too. Part of the site is extremely steep and erosion will be a significant risk at this site. It is very likely that over seeding and treating the site in stages will be necessary for erosion prevention. Most of the field to the west drains away from the site, but there is existing erosion at the site and concentrated flow on the north side of the site. There are relatively few trees at this site and one legume (red bud) was found at the site. Clopyralid and spot appplications of tricloyr TEA should be used at this site.

Legumes: Red bud (1)

Swi-1: Near Pleasant, IN

Comments: This site is very small and exist along a fence row. It is immediately adjacent to the state highway. Erosion will not be an issue at this site. Although there are not any large areas of water close to the site, surface water in the adjacent drainage ditch along the road may present an issue and require the use of glyphosate. There are not any trees at this site.

Legumes: none present

Van-1: Mesker Drive Site, Evansville

Comments: This is one of the largest in Indiana and is predominately owned by the city of Evansville. It is across the street from the Mesker Zoo and is directly adjacent to a parking lot and a public golf course. Homes exist on the west side of the site as well as a drainage ditch that runs through the site to areas behind the homes. Water from the site will drain towards the golf course on the west side of the site. Accessibility to the site will be difficult, but kudzu has been reduced to a spot treatment level. There are numerous hidden dangers in the flat part of the site, while other parts of the site are extremely steep and separated by 8 foot deep erosion ditches. Erosion is more severe on the north side of the site compared to the south side of the site. The soil at the site is a sand loam, but not pure sand.

Legumes: Cercis canadensis (Numerous seedlings on the edge and outside of site)

Van-4: Stringtown and Peterburgh Rd

Water may be an issue at this site depending on rainfall. The area is full of springs and a stream runs along the east side of the site. There is also a fence along part of the eastern border of the site. Erosion may be a concern on the south side of the site. However, multiple applications have been performed at this site by the property owner and a hired contractor, therefore the erosion threat is reduced.

Legumes: No legumes could be found at the site.

Van-7: Rodenburg Avenue, Evansville, IN

The site exists on 3 different properties and be accessed from the western property where there is ample room to park and turn around a truck and trailer. There are not any bodies of water at the site, but an old well that is covered up exists at the site During extremely wet periods, surface water can be an issue in the low potions of the site. Erosion will not be a major concern at this site, but prior notification will be important due to the presence of children and pets.

Legumes: None present during inspection

Wck-2: Lincoln State Park Area, Along US 231, North of Gentryville

Comments: The site is relatively flat with some drainage ditches located on the north side of the site. Water should not be a major factor with this site. Accessibility will be a problem because the site extends nearly 0.5 miles into a wooded area. There are two large open areas in the patch, but a majority of the kudzu growth is occurring in the trees. A few red buds exist on the north side of the site, some of which are in a state of decline.

Legumes: Cercis Canadensis

Wck-3: CR 650 S (Red Brush Rd) East of RR tracks on ALCOA property

Comments: This site is easy to access but extremely difficult to traverse. The site has some old barbwire fences and a creek that cannot be crossed without a bridge. Water will be an issue at this site. There is also a drainage ditch along the road that flows into the creek. The drainage easement along the road is considered a county right of way and a permit may be need to put a culvert into gain access. The site was previously treated by a third party contractor with Crossbow and Glyphosate and had been allowed to fallow for 4 years and is once again 50 feet in the trees in 2017. The open areas are 80 percent suppress, but growth is returning. Basal bark and foliar triclopyr is recommended for this site.

Legumes: None present at time of inspection

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road and is located on flat ground. It may be difficult to get equipment turned around because the road is narrow. There are not any bodies of water close to the site, but there is an abandon well at the site. This hazard has been marked for safety reasons as well as minimize pesticide drift near the well. Erosion will not be an issue at the site and there are not any homes close to the site. There are a fair number of large vines on the outside edge of the site which could be easily treated with a basal bark applications. Clopyralid and triclopyr would be recommended for this site.

Legumes: None found

Wsh-3: Martinsville Road, SE of Salem, IN

Comments: This site is easily accessible from the county road and there are not any bodies of water in close proximity to the sites. It has a very low erosion potential with little need for erosion control once the kudzu is removed. There is a fair amount of underbrush that may make site navigation and equipment access tricky, but the kudzu itself is not very dense. Very few legumes exist at this site, only a hand full of red bud trees. Only minor spot treating is needed in 2017, but brush cutting small paths may be necessary to gain access to a few areas.
