SmithThe Montgomery County Library reached a total circulation of 30,963 in January, setting a new high in reading in the county, Mrs. Tommie Greene, county librarian, reports. In contrast, the total figure for January, 1959 was 17,392.Mrs. Greene who says this is the first time the circulation for one month has reached the 30,000 mark, says the increase is probably due to the larger school population and an improving school circulation. She reports a great interest in scientific books for all ages, and that some of the schools have grouped their pupils according to ability and make reading ability special requests for them.According to the librarian, the facts seem to disprove two quotations taking from a library bulletin: “The book is a greatly neglected invention,” said by Logan Wilson, President of the University of Texas in a speech to the Louisiana State University library dedication; “We today are not a people reading…nor do we value learning,” said Dr. Robert Oxnam, President of Pratt Institute, at the New York Library Assn. Conference in November.“Montgomery County, particularly in its schools, does not fall in this group,” Mrs. Greene says. She also gives comparative figure in the cost of operating the Montgomery County Bookmobile to the national average. The largest number of bookmobiles in the survey costs more than 10 cents per mile with some running as much as 15 cents, yet the cost of operating the local bookmobile in the past fiscal year was only over 4 cents per mile.Of the books circulated in January, adults read 885 fiction and 554 non-fiction; juveniles read 25,438 fiction and 3,996 non-fiction. Ninety-seven new books accessioned and books were placed on order at a cost of $306.72.
