FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK....

OCTOBER, 2016

As the 2016 FPHA Annual Education Conference came to a close, I was talking with Ethel Edwards. "What I felt was the energy. I haven't felt that in a while." she said. And she wasn't the only one who felt it. Something was different this time.

Going forward into the 2016-2017 year we plan to put that energy to good use. There is much to be done. First, this will be the Year of Membership. Many ideas at the conference were generated as to how to get new members to join and previous members to return. There was also a lot of interest on having local networking meetings and getting to know the FPHA members in your area. This year two of the FPHA Interest Groups - Health Equity and Students - met at the conclusion of the conference and came away with both enthusiasm and lists of action items.

As some of you may know, the first FPHA "Conference" was called in 1929 by the State Health Officer, Dr. Henry Hanson who, two years later, was the FPHA's first president. It was fitting then that the current State Surgeon General, Dr. Celeste Philip, gave a well received presentation on the State of the State in regards to public health. I overheard a group sitting in the row behind me say "She has her heart in it." You could see the smiles on the faces all around as Dr. Philip ended her talk by stating how she supports the FPHA.

There was also a bittersweet moment when we received the letter that two anchors of FPHA, Sandy Magyar, the Executive Director for the last fourteen years, and Marsha Zupan, an ever present key coordinator for the annual conference for over eleven years, will be moving on in January. We sincerely wish them the best and express our deepest gratitude for all they have done for FPHA.

It's going to be a fantastic year. Come join us and be part of the fun!

Hillsborough FPHA Members Hold a Brown Bag Lunch at the Tampa Lab, September 22, 2016.

At first, one or two people started to trickle in but by 12 o'clock the Brown Bag lunch was in full swing. It was a chance to network and get to know a little more about FPHA. In all, twenty eight were on hand and the room hummed with conversation. The talk was casual with pauses for sips of bottled water or a bite of a salad.

About half way through lunch we had an opportunity for a quick round of introductions. Since the occasion was hosted at the Tampa Lab, (Bureau of Public Health Laboratories) it wasn't surprising that a number of those folks were present. The Tampa Lab is located on the University of South Florida campus and the College of Public Health had good representation as well. Many who came were FPHA members but a few were not and were interested to see what the association was about.

Rick France gave a quick overview of FPHA and other members were on hand to discuss their Interest Groups (Allison Rapp, Student; Linda Lacomb-Williams, Public Health Nursing; and Jennifer Waskovich, Community Health). The main topic of the day was "What can FPHA do for you to make your membership valuable?" The responses varied but what they had in common was that everyone was interested in how to get more involved.

The Brown Bag Lunch ended about 1 PM and as people started to leave they left their red "Hello" name tags or business cards on the table so contact information could be shared. All agreed they enjoyed the good-natured conversations and getting to meet other FPHA members.

We anticipate doing at least a couple more Brown Bag Lunches in our area this year. You can host your own Brown Bag lunch for members and non-members, too. All you need is an available conference room. And don't forget, since everyone brings their own lunch there is essentially no cost.

(Special thanks to Linda Lacomb-Williams who was kind enough to bring some extra wraps and chips.)

Free Live Webinar: HIPAA/HITECH requirements for Public Health Departments October 26 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Public Health Departments provide a broad array of services to their communities, which may include but are not limited to: disease surveillance and investigation, immunizations, emergency preparedness, infant and maternal health programs, health promotion and prevention programs, home health services, child care facility inspection. While the size and scope of health departments across the country varies between different jurisdictions, all share common goals, challenges, and regulations. The HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach requirement is a mandate under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Likewise, the HIPAA Privacy Rule provides federal protections for personal health information held by health departments and gives patients an array of rights with respect to that information. Personnel involved in public health must have a grasp on disclosures of personal health information permitted for patient care and other important purposes, along with other ways the regulations affect their job functions. This 50-minute webinar by EHR 2.0, will focus on HIPAA/HITECH requirements for Public Health Departments. More Details:
