December already!. Seems like only a month ago it was the beginning of November.

This is always a fun month. Very busy with shopping and parties with family and friends.

From all the people at the ROAR publishing company, (wait a minute….that’s only me) well, I’ll include all my reporters then, have yourself a great holiday season and a happy and healthy new year to you and your family.

For your benefit, I’ve asked Santa to bring me some better jokes for the coming year.

Speaking of Santa, did you hear the joke about he and Mrs. Santa Claus …. Oh! I’d better not tell that one because Santa reads the ROAR and he won’t bring me any new jokes…..

What Has Been Happening Around Here?

Junior Circuit Champions

Each year competitive junior teams participate in the Quebec Junior Circuit. At the end of the circuit season, in March, the top 4 teams on points are invited to play in the finals. The winner of the junior section wins the right to represent Quebec at the prestigious OVCA Junior Superspiel. This year the finals took place at Longue Pointe.

Once again, this year’s Junior Circuit Champions are none other than our team Hall:

Jason Olsthoorn

Maxandre Caron Coach: Rob Philion

Adam Freilich

Alex Hall

Their championship banner will hang from our rafters beside last year’s banner.

Congratulations gentlemen.

From Bowser and Blue: Maybe we shouldn’t be too hard on the PQ and their charter. It has been the first time in a long while that the Jews and Muslims have been in total agreement about something.

Message from Ice Chairman, Greg Kehoe

Once again the MWCC Volunteer Army were busy again. This time we painted the east wall in the shed and pressure washed, scraped, and painted the white base coat on the ice surface floor prior to the compressor plant start up.

Special thanks to Joe Balough, Pierre Dufour, Jack Ford, Ed Jones, Peter Graham, and Wolf Linsenmeyer for giving up their time during the summer, for their hard work and for their sore muscles...and we even had some fun in the process.

Here’s a picture of the boys at work during the summer months:

2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Cathy Hughes has nothing specific to add this month but she continues her search for volunteers. Please speak to her if you are willing to give of your time for this special event.

A blonde was tired of hearing blonde jokes and decided to prove people wrong. She spent days studying a map of Canada, memorizing all the capitals for all the provinces. The next time someone started telling a blonde joke she said, “Hey, not all blondes are stupid. I can prove it. Give me the name of any province and I’ll tell you its capital.”

“Manitoba,” someone suggested

“M.”

8 Enders

For some time now, Al Rodgers has been gathering information about those in our club who have been good (lucky?) enough to have been a member of a team that scored an

8 ender at our club.

As you are probably aware, to get an 8 ender requires some great curling from the team that accomplishes this feat and, shall we say, some very suspect curling ability on the team that suffers this embarrassing result.

Al has donated a trophy to honour those who were on the right side of this achievement.

He has also agreed to respect those who wish this trophy never existed by NOT revealing their names to the public. (However, if this trophy was to ever disappear, the names of these people would appear at the top of the list of suspects.)

Here are the teams (players) whose names will appear on the trophy:

1976 1990 1993

Lead (Unknown) Mike Dowd Ruth McRae

Jim Tsonos Bob Lanno Joyce Leach

Milt Parsons Lynn Lehman Ethel Dickinson

Jim Dodds Al Rodgers Barbara Ross

1994 2011 2012

Sue Quenneville Brian Williams Francine Jones

Cathy Boyle Zack Wise Robbie Sproule

Thelma Millard Marc Philion Patricia Cogan

Eleanor O’Hara Rob Williams Norm Savoie

Al would like to thank Alice Homonko, Sandra Jones, Cathy Boyle, and Anne Mitchell for their assistance in researching this project.

We all thank Al for donating the trophy and for his effort in looking into the past to discover those who have been able to celebrate this rare curling event.

Make a note: If anyone has any team to add or names to change…tell us now or forever hold your peace.

And for those who gave up the 8 enders……

Calcutta

Chairman, Ed Jones asked me to let everyone know our yearly Calcutta will be held in February. There has been a little trouble settling on the dates because of the conflict with the Scotties this coming February. We have many in our club who are volunteering to work in the Scotties and Ed wanted to make sure these people had the opportunity to play in our Calcutta as well.

Here are the dates:

February 12 - Skips to pick their teams

19 - Auction night

25-28 - The games are played

Mark these dates on your calendars. This competition is always a lot of fun.

A Sunday school class was studying the Ten Commandments. They were ready to discuss the last one. The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was. Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the covers off thy

neighbor's wife."

Where is a good place to hide money from your husband….under the vacuum cleaner.

Entertainment

Here is a report from Erin Ryan:

Thank you to everyone who attended the Opening Dinner. It was a fun evening and it was wonderful to catch up after the summer. A special thank you to Kerry Laughlin and Heather Boyle for all their help; and to Kyran and Alex who did a great job serving and cleaning up.

The new year will be an exciting time for everyone with the Olympics and the Scotties. So, stay tuned for a lot of thrilling events at the Club to celebrate these special occasions. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year.

Ron stood over his tee shot on the 450 yard 18th hole for what seemed an eternity.

He waggled, looked up, looked down, waggled again, but didn't start his back swing.

Finally his exasperated partner asked, "What 's taking so long?"

"My wife is watching me from the clubhouse balcony," Ron explained. "I want

to make a perfect shot."

"Good lord," his companion exclaimed. "You don't stand a chance of hitting

her from here.

Mixed Day Curling

Christmas Luncheon

Here is a note from Coordinator James Botsford:

The date for our Christmas luncheon will be Thursday, December 19th, starting at noon.

There will be a roast beef luncheon with all the trimmings (Tony) and red and white table wine. This will be followed by the festive season entertainment.

Jacques Lacroix will be running his MAXI half & half draw and the Choir (?)

also will be performing.

For the enjoyment of everyone, with great expense, we will be flying belly dancers Nesrin and Havva, directly from Istanbul to entertain us. I know most of you will want to come just to hear their music.

The cost for this closing luncheon is $25 for players and for guests.

The caterer requires an exact count so please see Mike Homonko, at the club, or contact him at 514-426-1389 as soon as possible.

Let’s end the 1st half of the curling season in the company of fierce competitors and good friends.

Super Senior Bonspiel

Here is a report from Ray Dubrule

Every year Montreal West hosts 3 Super Seniors bonspiels.

The first of these was held on November 6th. Due to injuries and illness, the event was limited to only 2 draws. Nevertheless, as usual, a good time was again had by all.

The Bonspiel went off without a hitch. The credit for this ongoing success goes to the members of the Mixed Day league who continually devote their time and energy in making these events a showcase to the other regional clubs from the U.S., Quebec and Ontario. The list is too long to mention

However, special thanks must go to the tireless Joe Balogh who not only sets up the tables and readies the coffee, but is also there to greet our visiting guests upon their arrival.

These outside clubs like it here and they keep coming back. More outside teams want to join, especially in the first 2 draws.

Our January and March Bonspiels are already practically full for the first 2 draws.

Something new: A Mixed Bonspiel for the 3rd Draw in March.

RESULTS

1st Draw

1st prize T.M.R.( Ray Gauvin)

2nd prize Valleyfield (Lucien Currier)

3rd prize Pointe Claire (Al Ward)

2nd Draw

1st prize Brownsburg (Pierre Laurin)

2nd prize Laval (Michel Legault)

3rd prize Alexandria (Jim Morris)

Interclub

Here are the results of the interclub games played since the last ROAR was produced:

On October 30th at St. Lambert, the following teams won their games:

nobody…nobody…nobody….skipped by nobody As you can see, nobody won.

On November 1, Glenmore came to visit our club and we won 1 game. The winning team was:

Greg Kehoe, Bob Carson, Ed Crosbie and Dave Dubeau

On November 7th we visited Longue Pointe. Here we tied 1 of the 4 games.

On November 15 the Town of Mount Royal visited and we won 3 and tied 1. Let me repeat that….sorry, I can’t retype this….even my fingers can’t believe this result…. The winning teams were:

Ray Dubrule, Ron Neill, Rick Hughes and James Botsford

Joe Balogh, Mike Homonko, Peter Graham and Jacques Lacroix

Chester Sawczyszyn, Gerry Sabourin, , Bert Mombourquette and Paul Doyle

The tying team was:

Mike Dowd, Bob Carson, Ed Crosbie and Dave Dubeau

On November 20 Lachine paid a visit to our club. We won 3 and lost 1. The winning teams were:

Joe Balogh, Pierre Dufour, Mike Homonko and Jean-Marie Martin

Cyril Bernard, Lindsay Crysler, Bill Bedford and James Botsford

Greg Kehoe, Mike Dowd, Ed Crosbie and Dave Dubeau

So let’s analyze these results. In our 2 away games we managed to tie one game. In our 3 home games we had 7 wins, 1 tie and only 4 losses. A few things are obvious:

The very exhausting travel time to away games is affecting our play.

No rum is being served at these outside clubs.

Their ice is terrible and there is definitely something wrong with their rocks.

For our home games, it is very apparent the visiting teams showed up but played

only 5 games.

Condoms should be used on every conceivable occasion.

Junior Curling

Unfortunately the Juniors came up short on some practicing in the last month as the club was used for other events on two Saturdays in November. The Juniors curlers, as well as coaches, are eager to get the ball rolling again in December...

The Junior holiday party will take place on December 21st, and will include a potluck, gift exchange, other fun activities and the third game of this year’s Myke Wilder League. Also coming up, between Christmas and New Year’s, will be the annual Tim Caverly Christmas Bonspiel – we are anticipating entering at least three teams in this year’s spiel, and our Juniors have done well in the past. Stay tuned for an update in the New Year.

Several of our Juniors have entered the contest to be a ‘Junior Star’ at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which Montreal is lucky to host at the Maurice Richard Arena, in February.

As per the Scotties website (seasonofchampions.ca), “Junior Stars will be showcased during a pre-game ceremony with their team. They also receive a photo with the team, tickets to the draw for themselves and their parents/guardians, as well an event jacket, pin and tour of the TSN production trailer.” To be eligible in winning such a unique opportunity, these young curlers had to answer a few questions regarding their passion for the sport. We are very much hoping to see one of our MWCC Juniors parade down the ice at the opening ceremony.

Wednesday Evening House League

Here is Mark Romer’s report:

We’re rolling through the Fall!

The Evening House league has had a very active fall session which will terminate with a 2 game playoff series in December. Our 9 team format has reduced the challenge of locating spares on a weekly basis.

Wilkinson

Match League

The Wilkinson MATCH League needs PLAYERS!

The Wilkinson MATCH League has been playing with 4 teams this fall. We are looking for 5-6 interested members to expand to a 6 team format. MATCH teams are organized by a committee and balanced according to curling ability. Club members can sign up as individuals or as couples who wish to play together. The typical mixed format (alternating males and females) is not being applied. Teams will be rearranged twice over the winter months to mix it up.

Our league alternates early and late draws with the Wilkinson MIXED League on Friday nights. We share the great food that our resident chef Jim Doyle cooks up for us weekly. (Thanks Jim!) Come and join the fun on Friday nights!

For more info or to sign up please speak to Anne Mitchell [anne.mitchell@videotron.ca], Ann Anderson [ann_david.anderson@sympatico.ca] or Mark Romer [mark.romer@mcgill.ca]

Mixed League

From Jim Doyle:

Team Walpole, with Zack, Dale Houston and Marc Filion with spare Steve Fagan won the first quarter. Team Holdaway was second. There was a 4 way tie for 3rd place.

The second quarter started November 29th.

Instructional League

There are 6 people in the Instructional and they are progressing quickly. One has already spared twice.

Boss; Alice. I want you to interview a job candidate. Let me know what you think.

Alice to candidate: Why did you leave your last job?

Candidate: I punched my boss.

Alice to herself: This guy is exactly what we need.

Carpet Bowling

Here are the members of this year’s Board:

President - Eileen Motton

Past President - Kathleen Hardiman

Vice President - P.K. MacWilliam

Treasurer - Laura Ross

It looks like the Christmas luncheon will be held in the first half of December.

New members would be welcomed.

SPA Curling

It sure looks like the Montreal West curling group has started out having fun. The competition has been close between a number of teams and we hope all continue to enjoy the game as we gear down a little before the holiday season.

That being said, we of the committee, want to wish all of you of very safe and joyous holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in great shape (no extra pounds) in January.

Cheers!

I don’t look seventy, do I? Now be honest.

No, love, you don’t. Not anymore

What’s Happening Over the Next Few Weeks?

December 11 - Christmas Luncheon - Bridge

17 - Day Ladies Fun Day and Luncheon

19 - Mixed Day Curling Christmas Luncheon

21 - Junior’s Christmas Party

January 2 - Vice President’s competition

A father asked his 10-year old son if he knew about the birds and the bees.

"I don't want to know," the child said, bursting into tears. "Promise me you won't tell me."

Confused, the father asked what was wrong.

The boy sobbed, "When I was 6, I got the 'There's no Easter Bunny' speech.

At 7, I got the 'There's no Tooth Fairy' speech.   When I was 8, you hit me with the 'There's no Santa' speech.

If you're going to tell me that grown-ups don't really have sex, I'll have nothing left to live for."

Random Thoughts during the month of November

I wonder what would happen if Pauline Marois or one of her cabinet members was in a car accident and was transported to the Jewish General Hospital.

Did you notice all the politicians in Ottawa and Quebec wearing poppies for Remembrance Day? I wonder how many of them were wearing them for political reasons only. How many were bought by their staff and told to wear them. Maybe I’m being too cynical. Or am I?

I wonder what the people in Alberta think about their government sending $7.8 billion (yes, billion) to Quebec each year in equalization payments. Quebec has the lowest university fees in the country and they have $7 day care...something those in Alberta do not have.

I wonder how they get deer to cross at those signs

We used to be able to identify the people who came from Verdun from those that came from NDG or Montreal West by the way they described the center of Montreal. People from Verdun called it uptown while those from NDG and Montreal called it downtown.

I wonder if it is the same today.
