MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY ADDS

NEWARK ELECTRONICS TO DISTRIBUTION ROSTER;

EXPANDS IMPORTANT CATALOG CHANNEL

CHANDLER, Ariz., Nov. 1, 2000 [NASDAQ: MCHP] — Microchip Technology Inc. today announced that Newark Electronics, part of global Premier Farnell plc (NYSE: PFP), has joined its distribution roster serving the United States. The move expands Microchip’s worldwide catalog channel presence, creating a powerful vehicle for seeding the market with the company’s sophisticated development tools for its PICmicro( microcontrollers and for continued technical support of embedded design engineers.

“Signing Newark Electronics continues our quest to make Microchip products readily available to as many engineers as possible, through whichever channel they choose in whatever quantity they need,” said Rick Bosshardt, Microchip’s Director of Worldwide Distribution Sales. “Today’s announcement is a natural extension of our European and Asian relationship with Premier Farnell, making them our worldwide catalog partner.”

“Currently, Microchip is #2 in market share worldwide in the 8-bit microcontroller market (measured by units shipped, per Dataquest), so the addition of their products to Premier Farnell is significant. Microchip products will now be available through Newark Electronics and Farnell Components, our sister company in Europe, with distribution in every major market throughout the world. This agreement brings Microchip’s full range of products to the world’s largest small-order customer base, which ranges in size from small companies to Fortune 100 corporations. And it’s ready to ship the same day,” says Diane Sweeney, vice president of product management for Newark. Newark goes to market through catalog, direct mail, branch and field sales, national account programs and the Internet.
