“Brave New World” Project

Brave New World Project—Build Your Own Dystopia!

Overview: As an extension of the novel Brave New World, you will be creating a "utopian" society with a partner or small group.  The society presented in our story is a fictional account of a futuristic totalitarian community that has arisen many years after the devastation of the "9 years War" that has almost wiped out the Earth and all humanity. YOUR society does not have to start this way. This is your opportunity to be creative!

Assignment: It is 2540 A.D. and you have been selected to apply be one of the new World Controllers. In order to secure the job, you must design a society that will meet the basic needs of its members while maintaining order. You must determine what to do with dissidents; how information will be disseminated; how you will keep their citizens in their proper places; what occupation your citizens will have; how citizens' basic needs for food, shelter, clean air and water, medical care, clothing, etc. will be met; and whether or not (and how) you will control the size of the population. You must persuade the committee who selected you that your utopia will work so that your ideas will be implemented and you will be selected for the job.

Proposal Format: Students should divide into groups of four. Your group will present (casually) to the class. The information below should be displayed on a poster board (this will be provided in class). Use the first day in class to begin thinking of the information you want to display/creating ideas. We will use another class period to put all the information on our posters.
