It does not include much broader CUNY updates and guidance, housed online at Education-specific updates and resources are posted available on cuny.edu/teacheredFor questions, please contact CUNY’s University Dean for Education Ashleigh Thompson.Guidance March 16, 2020As of Monday, March 16, education students who are participating in clinical placements for fieldwork or student teaching required by their academic program, and their faculty supervisors,?were told?not report to school/field sites until further notice.? In light of the DOE school closure, and plan for three-days of professional development for teachers at school sites this week, we have heard requests from schools, CUNY students and faculty about candidates attending these days so they can participate in training and assist with remote learning delivery for their school site. ?Upon careful review, CUNY will support?clinical fieldwork placements that support schools’ use of remote learning, under the following conditions: The principal invites/approves the candidate's continued participation; cooperating teachers?can provide adequate supervision to students in the context of remote learning; faculty are willing and able to support student placements, as required; and students are aware of risks and willing to take the necessary precautions, as per available guidance, to participate in the school-based training during the crisis. The health and safety of our students and faculty remain a top priority, therefore considerations for placement may be addressed on a case-by-case basis.? This?update does not preclude colleges from engaging in virtual fieldwork, which was previously recommended.? This policy, and its four conditions, pertains to social workers, therapists, counselors and other students with required school-based placements.Guidance March 15, 2020CUNY- Rapid Transition to Online Learning resource free and available to share with faculty and students: March 13, 2020As of Monday, March 16, education students who are participating in clinical placements for fieldwork or student teaching required by their academic program, and their faculty supervisors, should not report to school/field sites until further notice.? Individual school sites and cooperating teachers should be notified.? CUNY will continue its consultation with NYSED and DOE, and resources regarding alternative methods for clinical preparation will be made available to colleges. ?In instances where college requirements exceed state requirements for certification, colleges should consider waiving college requirements above those of the state, if academically appropriate.??In alignment with remote learning and simulation, a guide for using Virtual Fieldwork authored by Hunter faculty Laura Baecher is posted in the News bar of cuny.edu/teachered??Guidance March 10, 2020??NYSED has issued the following guidance for addressing the needs of students impacted by the Coronavirus: “Clinical experience must meet regulatory requirements.? If all the avenues to meeting clinical requirements have been exhausted, the program may… seek approval to use simulation or alternative methods.”? ??For an academic program leading to a recommendation for the issuance of an initial teacher certificate, applicable NYSED regulatory requirements in?52.21?define student teaching and describe experiences that must span at least 40 school days. In some instances, college program requirements exceed NYSED requirements.??Every effort?must?be made to provide continuity of the clinical experience and meet the applicable regulatory requirements.??If a P-12 placement school closes for a period of time, student teaching within the school should resume upon reopening if this occurs within the calendar previously established for student teaching. The following guidance is also applicable to field experience hours.? If a P-12 placement school has organized remote learning for their P-12 students, the student teacher may be able to continue planning/instruction/assessment within this remote learning framework under the remote supervision of their cooperating teacher and college-based supervisor. In the case of an extended closure of a P-12 placement school that makes resumption of student teaching not possible and that provides no opportunity for supervised teaching through a remote learning framework, if re-placement in another P-12 school is not possible, and if a program is not able to provide a clinical experience that meets the regulatory requirements, college deans should contact Dr.?Ashleigh Thompson, University Dean for Education (ashleigh.thompson@cuny.edu)?to discuss next steps for communications with NYSED.? ? ................
