1916-1917

Sept. 1916 School could not be opened on scheduled time Sept 11th owing to the prevalence of infantile paralysis. The Board of Health ruling was followed by our school as a matter of prudence. The date tentatively set for opening is Sept. 25 – the Board of Health may recommend a further postponement.

Word reached us that Thos. Hinchey of Corona L.I. of Section C First year

class, was drowned Aug 16. He was in Connecticut on vacation.

Postal card notices of the new date for opening were mimeographed and

sent out to all the boys already in attendance or just registered.

Sept. 22, Friday. First day for conditioned examinations – Latin, Greek in 2d year; Latin, Eng. & Science in 1st year. Mr. Hayes SJ. & Mr. Archdeacon SJ. in 2d year; Mr. McKay SJ. & Mr. Fennell SJ. in 1st year.

Sept. 23, Saturday. Second day of condit. exams. Fr. Reilly in charge. Fr. Kilroy’s mother died this morning. He was called home last night. Messrs. Archdeacon & Hayes assisted in the office. Some of the other scholastics helped to conduct examinations.

Mr. Andrus SJ. who was transferred to Buffalo July 31 will return here

tomorrow. Mr. Kempel has gone from Regis to take his place.

A few new boys were registered today. The 4th and 5th floors are not yet

completed so the 2d and 3d year classes are on the 3d floor of the school. After a couple of months (3) when the building is free of workmen it will be possible to put the 3d year classes on the 4th floor.

Sept. 25, Monday. Schola brevis day. Our faculty for 1916-17: Rector, Fr. Richards; Prefect of Studies, Fr. Kilroy; Prefect of Discipline, Fr. Reilly; third year Messrs. Andrus, Hayes, Archdeacon & Mr. McHale; second year Messrs. McKay, McGowan, Fennell & Daly; Feb classes Messrs. McLoughlin SJ, McGivney A.B.; First year Messrs. Scharp Ph.D., Kelly A.B., Egan A.B., Fuller SJ. & Wheeler SJ.

All the boys were assembled in the Auditorium at 9.30 Fr. Reilly read out the class lists for 3d & 2d year & these classes then had schola brevis. Fr. Reilly kept the new boys in the Auditorium & told them the rules and customs of the school, then he assigned them to their classes. Dismissal about 10.30. Some new boys registered.

Of last year’s second year boys [? Blank in diary] did not return for 3d

year; of the first year class [? Blank in diary] did not return for 2d year. Of these, some had been requested not to return. Of the others who didn’t return some had gone to school elsewhere, but the greater number had gone to work. Of the boys who had registered for the entering class [? Blank in diary] did not report for class.

Books were on sale today in the playroom at the lunch counter.

Sept. 26, Tuesday. Class began about 10.00 – the sale of the text books was continued from 9-10. Cash sales only, this year. The past two years boys were permitted to get books on credit – this entailed extra book keeping work & also a loss as some did not pay up. Class till 12.00

Sept. 27, Wednesday. Regular class all day – Lunch counter opened today. Mrs. Wood is in charge & Mrs. Fitzgerald is assistant (as last year). 3 boys from Athlet. Assoc. help to wait on boys – for this they get their lunch – this extra assistance will be continued as long as there is need (probably all year).

Sept. 28, Thursday. Regular order. Hereafter when no entry is made in the diary for any school day (Saturday is our weekly holiday) it will be understood that it was a day of regular order.

Oct. 3, Tuesday. Regular order. Fr. Kilroy returned last night.

Oct. 4, Wednesday. Catech. lectures will begin next week, also Modern language. Fr. Lupi (one of the parish fathers) who is to teach Spanish, is at present helping at Blackwell’s Island.

Oct. 5, Thursday. De more, a.m. P.M. Confessions at 12.45, Fr. D Quinn & Fr. Dooley – we shall probably need a 3d confessor this year – confessions were not finished by 2.30 today.

Oct. 6, First Friday. Visit to Blessed Sacrament at 2.00 Benediction – Instruction by Fr. D. Quinn. Miss Couler was organist. Mr. Archdeacon SJ. has charge of the League of the Sacred Heart.

Oct. 9, Monday. Modern language classes today = 3d year at 1.45. Mr. Andrus SJ. has German, Fr. Kilroy has French, Fr. Lupi has Mr. Egaňa’s class of last year in Spanish & Mr. McGowan has A & B of last year combined. No Modern lang. In 2d year. The new arrangement is in effect, i.e. one period of History a day in 1st and 2d year: these boys will have no history in 3d and 4th year but will have Modern lang. every day instead of 3 times a week. Mr. Archdeacon teaches Physiol. in 2 year E to free Mr. McGowan for Spanish.

The Senior Sodality held its first meeting today. Mr. Hayes SJ. is

moderator this year also. Some more 2d & 3d year boys were admitted to fill vacancies. There will be a Junior Sodality for 1st year.

Oct. 10, Tuesday. Catech. lectures & Elocution began today in First Year. Fr. Reilly gives the lectures, Fr. Kilroy has the elocution ½ hour of each – then in 2 sections. Classes in Lecture Room and Library Room.

Oct. 11, Wednesday. Catech. lectures and Elocution in 2d year – 2 sections. Fr. Reilly gives the lectures, Mr. McLoughlin SJ. will have the Elocution hereafter. Mr. McKay took it today.

A small organ, purchased ($130.00) from Estey Co. for the chapel, was received today. Mass for repose of soul of T. Hinchey, drowned Aug 16. Mr. & Mrs. Hinchey & daughter were present.

Oct. 12, Thursday. Columbus Day – Legal Holiday – no class.

Oct. 13, Friday. Confessions 12.45, Fr. Condon & Fr. Dooley. The Junior Sodality was organized today. Mr. Fennell SJ. is the Moderator. Friday will be day for meetings.

Oct. 17, Tuesday. Fr. Reilly represented Regis faculty at funeral Mass of Fr. Tierney’s sister.

Oct. 19, Thursday. Rain all day – Started fire in the engine room today

Oct. 20, Friday. Very close today – shut down steam at 9.00 a.m.

Oct. 24, Tuesday. Orchestra re-organizing for the year. Mr. Hayes, SJ. will have the direction of it for 1916-17, also.

Oct. 25, Wednesday. Mass of the Holy Ghost at 9.00 in the Church. Fr. Kilroy, cel.; Fr. Lupi, deacon; Mr. McKay, subd. Music by boys’ choir of church. Mass over at 9.40, then a sermon by Fr. D. Quinn (Fr. Rector is in the hospital), all over about 10.00. Boys went at once to class – recess at 10.30 & so on as usual for the remainder of the day.

Mr. Daly unable to teach class owing to heavy cold. V.P. & Pr. Disc. took care of the class, Wed, Thurs & Fri.

Oct 26, Thursday. Catech Lectures & Eloc for 3d year began Oct 19 – all classes together in Library. Fr. Kilroy, Catech.; Mr. Andrus, Elocut

Oct. 30, Monday. Feast of St. Alph. Rod. Reg. Class. Mr. Daly able to resume teaching today

Oct. 31, Tuesday. De more. Confessions at 2.30 (Fr. D. Quinn) for those who wish to go.

Note sent announcing no classes tomorrow – holy day of obligation – also announcing Mass at 8.25 on All Souls’ Day. Marks closed today.

Nov. 1, Wednesday. Holyday of Obligation. Vacat – All Saints

Nov 2, Thursday. All Souls’ Day. 3 Masses in chapel in A.M. beginning 7.45 – very few of boys attended even the 3d Mass at 8.30. Confessions at 12.45 for First Friday. At 2.30 beads were recited in the chapel for the repose of the soul of deceased students – all school was present – aisles, etc. crowded as it is not possible to find a place in the chapel for the whole school.

Nov. 3, Friday. First Friday – Box of cards put inside door of chapel boys who made visit for Holy Souls took one of these cards & deposited it in a box placed at Sanctuary railing – we take acct. each day of the number of visits made. Mod. Lang. At 1.30 as is usual on First Friday – Visit to Bl. Sacrament in Church, & Benediction – at 2.05. No Junior Sodality on acct. of the First Friday devotions.

Nov. 6, Monday. Mr. Wheeler called to Baltimore Saturday for sickness of near relative. V.P. took the class today except for last period – Mr. Hayes taught then.

Nov. 7 Tuesday. Election Day – legal holiday – Vacat

Nov. 8, Wednesday. V.P. in 1st year & will be until Mr. Wheeler returns. Reading of marks in the Auditorium at 11.30 – Fr. Rector could not be present as he is still in the hospital. The reading required 40 minutes, so it may be necessary to begin before 11.30. Reports will be given to boys at the end of the week – to be returned signed.

Nov 9, Thursday. Mr. Wheeler was in class today – he returned last night. Glee Club organized. Mr. McLoughlin is Moderator.

Nov. 10, Friday. V.P. tested Mr. Kelly’s class in 5 decl. Mr. Reilly was present – very good. Confessions de more. Debating Society held its first meeting of the year. Mr. Andrus is Moderator.

Nov. 15, Wednesday. Concertation between 1 Year A & 1 Year C at 9.30 in Lecture room on 1st floor.

Nov. 16, Thursday. Mr. McGivney absent today, ill. Fr. Kilroy & Fr. Reilly taught the class.

Nov. 21, Tuesday. Contest between both sections of the Feb class 9.30 to 10.30 in the Lecture Room.

Nov 23, Wednesday. Building is decorated for Golden jubilee of the parish Church, residence, & all school buildings decorated with bunting

Nov. 24, Friday. Contest in 5 declensions between Section D and Section E of first year, 9.30 to 10.30 – Rest de more – Confessions in p.m.

Nov 26, Sunday. Regis Hall was used for the banquet tendered to the Cardinal, Papal Delegate, et. al., after the services in the Church – celebration of Golden Jubilee of Church. The hall was elaborately decorated & the school building lighted in outline – the quadrangle strung with electric bulbs (giving a gold & white light – papal colors) courtesy of Mr. N. Brady, Edison Company – the hall was used Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday night for Jubilee entertainments – the school building was thrown open for inspection.

Dec. 1, Friday. Vacat

Dec. 4, Monday. Reading of Marks for Nov. in auditorium Fr. Rector presiding, both Fr. Rector and V.P. wore the ferrioles (cloak). We began at 11.15 instead of 11.30 – more time is required owing to the increase in classes.

Dec. 5, Tuesday. Fr. Reilly had all First Year in both Catech. & Elocution in Auditorium. V.P. was at the hospital with one of the boys who was hurt in the morning on the way to school.

Dec. 7, Thursday. Latin test in Cicero in 3d Year & Caesar in 2d Year. 9.30 to 10.30. Teachers exchanged classes. Confessions 12.45 in preparation for tomorrow. At 2.30 in Chapel, Sodality celebration in honor of Immaculate Conception. Fr. Brown gave a talk to the Sodalists (both Sodalities present). Benediction by the V.P.

Dec. 11, Monday. No Sodality meeting today – the meeting was held last Thursday instead of today.

Dec. 15, Friday. Contest in 5 decl. For all 1st year – 7 boys chosen to represent each class – they were seated on the stage by classes. Contest 9.30 – 10.30 Mr. Kelly’s class won again this year. Winners (class) were given the last hour free 1.20 2.20. Heavy snow storm all day today; the first of the season.

Dec. 18, Monday. Very cold – snow of Friday is frozen over; traffic seems fair today. We had snow piled in quadrangle just after the storm, so there is space for the boys to go about it.

The New York Telephone Co. is now installing an outside phone. 800 calls -- $40.00 per year. The phone wires come in from the corridor near shower room & thence through pipes to Registrar’s office, then thru wall to V.P.’s office. The pipe from Registrar’s to V.P.’s office is too narrow (at the bend) to take any more wires (phone is Lenox 7547).

Dec. 19, Tuesday. Mr. Egan A.B. taught First Year Elocution today in Fr. V.P.’s stead. Teachers will receive their monthly check tomorrow also a $5.00 gold piece – lay teachers only.

Dec. 20, Wednesday. V.P. test in Latin theme in II & III years – theme is based on Latin

grammar – vocabulary from Cicero and Caesar. 9.30 to 10.30 Teachers exchanged classes as for Cicero and Caesar test.

Dec. 21, Thursday. Note sent to classes announcing Xmas Vac tomorrow at 12.15. Boys warned against absence tomorrow under severe penalties. Teachers notified to follow time order closely – no stories to be read, etc. No Cat. or Eloc. in 3d year. Teachers filled in the period. Confessions 12.45. Condition exams at 2.30. About 25 absent today – most are sick.

Dec. 22, Friday. Regular class in the morning – Very heavy downpour of rain all morning. Xmas holidays began at 12.10 – Marks for Dec. closed today. Classes will be resumed Jan. 2, Tuesday.

Some of the classes had class entertainments at the school during the

holidays: during afternoon & evening.

To Teachers Jan 11 1917: There is an impression among our boys that there is no homework except written work – Correct this impression. Please insist that the really important homework is preparation of next day’s class matter. Do not assign written work that will require a major part of the three hours which are allotted to home study.

Jan. 20, Saturday. V.P. said Mass in Regis chapel today “pro fundat. et benefactoribus” A Mass each month for this intention is to be said here (by one of the Regis Fathers).

Jan 27, Saturday. Registration Day for Feb class – only about 20 applied

Jan 29, Monday. 2d Registration day – about 35 more applied today. Mass in chapel at 8.30 today. Will be every day till Friday. Exam in Eng precept 9-10.30 and Catechism 1.30-2.30 in 3d & 2d years. Exam in History 9-10.30 in 1st year. No Modern classes today.

Jan. 30, Tuesday. Exam in Greek in both 2d & 3d years at 1.00-2.30. Exam in Eng. Precept in 1st year 9-10.30. Catech in 1st year 1.30-2.30

Jan 31, Wednesday. Regular class 9-10.30. Algebra exam for all classes 10.45-12.15. Mod. Language exams for 3d year 12.45-1.45. Regular Latin class during this period for 1st & 2d years. At 1.45 oral exams were begun. 1.45 to 2.30, two teachers on a Board – those on Roll of Honor or List of Merit all time & those having 85% general average in subject of exam are exempt.

Feb 1, Thursday. Latin Lit. exam in all classes 9-10.30 10.45 orals continued – all were heard by 12.00

Feb 2, Friday. Mid term holiday – Vacat. Fr. Lupi SJ. teacher of Spanish pronounced his “last vows” today in St. Ignatius Church.

Feb. 5, Monday. Second Term begins Severe driving snowstorm began about 7.00, traffic blocked. We did not begin class until about 9.45 – quite a number of absentees.

Third Year Section D – a small class divided among other 3 year classes. Last year’s February classes combined. (about 42). The two new classes, entering today (about 65 boys today some few to come tomorrow) were taken by Mr. McHale SJ. who had 3 yr D & Mr. McGivney A.B who had one of the Feb. classes. The new boys were dismissed at 12.15. The Modern lang. Classes in 3 year were held at 12.45-1.30, regular class in other two years. All were dismissed at 1.30. Books were ordered & will be on sale tomorrow

Feb. 6, Tuesday. The storm of yesterday cleared off before noon so that traffic is ok today. Regular order.

Feb. 7, Wednesday. Reading of marks at 11.20 in the Auditorium. Rev. Fr. Rector presided.

Feb 9, Friday. De more. Confessions 12.45; Fr. Blakely of America staff heard confessions from 1.30 – he had the 2 new classes. Fr. D. Quinn & Fr. Dooley were the other confessors. A note was sent to the classes announcing the holiday Monday, Lincoln’s Birthday

Feb. 12, Monday. Lincoln’s Birthday – Legal holiday – Vacat

Feb. 16, Friday. Confessions as last Friday.

Feb. 20, Tuesday. 3d Year Sect F had the use of the basement and gymnasium this evening 6 to 9.30 p.m. for shrove-tide meeting.

Feb. 21, Wednesday. Ash Wednesday. Ashes were distributed in the Chapel at first recess, 10.30, to 3d & 2d year boys; during lunch recess to 1st year boys.

Feb. 23, Friday. Confessions. Fr. Dooley & Fr. Pohlmann 12.45 to 2.30; Fr. George Quinn from 1.30 to 2.30

Feb. 28, Wednesday. Marks for Feb. close today. Names of all boys 16, 17 & 18 years of age were sent to Albany today, to the Military Training Commission – new law in effect Sept 1916 requires all boys of the ages mentioned, to take military training

March 1, Thursday. Confessions 12.45 (Frs D. Quinn & Dooley) for 1st Friday.

March 2, Friday. 1st Friday. Mr. McGowan SJ., away today for funeral of father of one of boys. V.P. has his class in a.m. Regular 1st Friday visit, 2.00 p.m. Mod. Lang. Classes 1.30 instead of 1.45.

March 5, Monday. At 11.00 A.M. in auditorium special Exhibition of Latin. 5 boys from 3A defended the 2d Cataline, one from F defended Pro Archia & one (3F) all Latin syntax. One boy from 2C & one from 2D defended 1st and 2d book of Caesar respectively – 3 from 3D were appointed to ask questions & two each from 2B & 2E to ask questions in Caesar. Some of the teachers also proposed difficulties, as did V.P. Rev. Fr. Rector was present – and all classes even 1st year. Regular order 12.45 to 1.30. School dismissed at 1.30 – not to establish precedent.

March 8, Thursday. Marks were read by the V.P. in various classrooms. Reports were given out to the boys (except of a few classes – reports not ready yet)

March 13, Tuesday. Condition-exams in Latin and Algebra 2.30

March 14, Wednesday. Condition-exams in Greek, English & Catech, 2.30

March 15, Thursday. Condition-exams in History & Science, 2.30

March 16, Friday. Confessions de more – Fr. D. Quinn & Fr. Dooley. Condit. Exam at 2.30 in Mod. Language

March 19, Monday. Feast of St. Joseph. Rector’s Day. Vacat at 12.15. Debate tomorrow as a celebration. Mr. McGowan SJ. in hospital. Slight operation. V.P. took class – Fr. Reilly taught one class of Algebra.

March 20, Tuesday. Mr. McGowan is still in the hospital. Mr. Hayes, SJ. away for a funeral in A.M. Mr. Andrus taught both classes 3A&B combined in Debating Room. At 1.00 in the Auditorium, semi-public debate of the Regis Debating Society, in honor of Fr. Rector’s Feast Day. 3 speakers on each side – and 15 speakers “ex corona” (from the floor).[Program Booklet placed in Diary: Resolved: ‘That the United States intervene in Mexico”] Gold medals (with silver trimmings) were awarded to each member of winning side & to the best speaker from the floor. The Affirm side, Jos. Roberts, Harold Traenor and George Brooks, won the medals. Jos. A O’Connor was awarded the medal for best speech ‘ex corona’, Orchestra rendered selections. All were over at 3.30 Fr. Rector granted “late sleep” tomorrow, i.e. school begins at 10.00 instead of 9 a.m.

March 21, Wednesday. School began at 10.00 a.m. Mr. McGowan SJ. returned yesterday – not yet able to take class regularly. No C.D. lecture or Elocut today for 2d year – Latin during that period. There will be no C.D.-Elocution for 3d year tomorrow – Latin during that period. The time given to the Debate yesterday will be counted for Eloc. this week.

March 26, Monday. Feast of the Annunciation – De more. Fr. D. Quinn addressed the Senior Sodality today. Benediction about 3.00 in our chapel. V.P. gave it.

The statues in the chapel were covered with purple, Saturday eve. We bought the cloth Saturday a.m. (Barclay St. – Mr. Troy’s)

March 27, Tuesday. Marks for March close today

March 28, Wednesday. Annual Retreat begins today. Fr. Fisher SJ. of the America staff is giving the Retreat. Fr. D. Quinn gave the Stations (from the pulpit), and Benediction. There was no special Mass for the boys today – the people were admitted to the 9.00 Mass upstairs – there ought to be a special Mass for the boys; and one for the people in the lower church as during 2 former years. Fr. Brown said the Mass. Instruction at 9.30, Recess 10.15, Spiritual reading (in class, Stations at 11.00, Instruction at 11.30, Lunch till 12.15, Beads and Spiritual Reading at 12.45 in classrooms, Instruction at 1.15 Benediction at 2.00, dismissal at 2.15. Today was fair, so there was no difficulty in going back and forth to the Church.

Four of the scholastics went to Phila. today to see the Passion Play. We had to combine some classes for Spirit. Read. No one should be permitted to go away during Retreat time.

March 29, Thursday. Second day of the Retreat. Fair though cloudy. All the teachers were present. Regular Retreat order.

March 30, Friday. Third day of Retreat. Yesterday & today 9.00 Mass for all in upper church. Urge a special Mass for the boys next year.

Confessions at 10.30 for 3d & 2d year (1st year had Sp. Reading at that time) boys went to lower church via sacristy. There were 10 confessors. After confessions of 2d & 2d year boys they returned to class for Sp. Reading. 1st year boys went to confess. About 10.55 & after confession they went to upper church to wait for Instruction. (No stations today) Confessions were over by 11.30. 11.30 Instruction de more. P.M. order = Instruction and Benediction (no Holy Hour). Boys were notified that anyone who wished to be excused from attending tomorrow must arrange today with Fr. Reilly, or V.P. There are many boys who work on Saturday and they cannot be present at Mass here – they promised to receive Holy Communion in their own churches.

March 31, Saturday. Mass at 8.00 a.m. said by Rev. Fr. Rector. Fr. D. Quinn & Fr. V.P. distributed Holy Communion (beginning at Consecration). Fr. Fisher gave the Papal Blessing after Mass (no sermon). Benediction of Bl. Sacrament (by Fr. Rector); all over at 8.55 (Fr. D. Quinn heard confessions at beginning of Mass, rear of Church, for the few boys who wished to go.)

Tables were set up in both playrooms – for 3d & 2d year in Lunch playroom –for 1st in 85 St playroom. Teachers were present to serve their classes, & preserve order. Coffee, rolls and bananas were provided:160 doz. rolls—an ample supply – 3 large bunches of bananas (about 450 odd). We borrowed 180 cups from Schmidt & Wenlerhoff & we hired 10 doz. cups from Luft & Luft, 8th Ave phone 3338 Chelsea (=$2.00) We bought the wood (about $45.00 and the hardware (about $12.00) and had the tables (10) made here (carpenters’ hire $14.00) The tables were stored in the store-room under top balcony, quadrangle side. The Prefect of Disc. took charge of all arrangements for the breakfast etc. The tables were set up on Friday eve. Drinking water turned off before Mass. Breakfast over by 9.20. 3 of Regis scholastics went to Phila. They did not leave here until after breakfast was over.

April 2, Monday. Latin test in Virgil for III Year 9.30-10.30. Latin test in Caesar for II Year. Reading of Marks in Auditorium at 11.20.

April 3, Tuesday. Geometry test announced for today had to be postponed. V.P. went to Washington today.

April 4, Wednesday. Notice sent to classes reminding boys of the consecration of chapel altar on Tues, Ap. 10 & inviting them to be present. Classes dismissed at 12.15 for Easter Vacation – to end April 11.

April 10, Tuesday. Consecration of the Altar in Regis chapel. Bishop Hayes, consecrator; Fr. Dineen, Master of Cer.; Fr. Rector SJ., Fr. Reilly SJ., & Fr. Condon SJ. assisted. Mr. Archdeacon, Asst. Mag. Caer.; Mr. Hayes SJ. & Mr. Fennell SJ., chanters. Messrs. McGowan SJ. & Wheeler SJ. assist. The following students were in the sanctuary: Page Ham, book bearer; Joe Hargrave, bugia [?]; R. Deely, miter bearer; Jos. Fennell, crozier; Jas. Santer, Jos. Kennedy acolyte.; L. Holters, crucifer. The ceremony began at 8.00 a.m. – consecration finished by 9.15, then the Bishop said Mass – all was over at 9.45 There were about twenty boys present in the body of the chapel.The Altar is consecrated in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – the relics placed in the sepulcher were of SS. Justini et Felicissimi. The Bishop announced an indulgence of one year for all who visited the chapel today & 200 days indulgence every year on the anniversary.

April 11, Wednesday. Classes resumed today after Easter holidays. Geometry test given in 3d year classes – it was announced before classes were dismissed for Easter.

April 12, Thursday. De more. Mr. Archdeacon & Mr. Fennell were ill today. V.P. took 3F, and Mr. McGowan taught 2E & 2C combined.

April 13, Friday. De more – Confessions p.m.

April 18, Wednesday. Meeting at 2.30 of those who have had military experience in Cadet Corps.

April 19, Thursday. All the students were arranged in companies today – during the morning – so as to be ready to begin drill next week. All are to drill – those 16 to 18 years who are obliged to drill by law were put in separate companies. Vacat at 12.15 so as to give all a chance to see the parade – this was “Wake-up America” day

April 20, Friday. V.P. left for Boston – then to Albany to see Military Training Commission. Mr. Hayes SJ. conducted the French class. Confessions. The boilers will be shut down Monday.

April 24, Tuesday. The Military Training Commission headqtrs is at 70th Regt. Armory. Made arrangements today for officer to drill 16 to 19 yr old boys. Drill in Yard at 2.30 for Co. K (small boys)

had no steam since Monday – no more for this school year.

May 10, Thursday. Mr. David Kelly of Physical Training Commission (for Catholic schools) called today about noon – we went over what the school is doing & he expressed himself as pleased.

May 14, Monday. Reorganization of Companies today 1.45 – 2.30 for 3d & 2d year – M. Lang. omitted today.

May 15, Tuesday. Drill in Armory today 2.30 to 4.15. Bell was sounded for end of class at 2.20 so that all could be at Armory by 2.30 Colonel Brough Head of Military Training for our zone was present today for a while & helped drill the boys.

May 17, Thursday. Ascension Day – holyday of obligation – Vacat. Today, the school field day was held at Pelham Bay Park – the day was ideal. A very large attendance. The N.Y.N.H. & H. Harlem launch is a quick means of reaching the Park – Also 3d Ave L to 149th & then via Westchester Ave Car & transfer to Pelham Bay Car. The A.A. May 31, Thursday. Fr. Cassidy of Burlington Diocese visited some of the 1st Year Alg. classes today. He is observing with a view to the opening of a new High School in Burlington, Vt. Confessions 12.45-2.15 for the First Friday – tomorrow

June 1, Friday. First Friday – Fr. Cassidy visited the 1st Year classes for Latin & English. Visit to the Blessed Sacrament at 2.00. Fr. D. Quinn supplied for Fr. Condon Notices of registration days was sent out today – some were sent by mail & some were sent by our boys who come from the schools which we wish to reach.

June 5, Tuesday. Regular class. No drill in the 8th Regt. Armory today, as the Regiment was mobilized in the Armory in case of trouble during the Conscription registration today. Next Tuesday will be the last drill. The boys who are 16 yrs old made out cards today to be filed with Military Training Commission – also a set to be kept at the school. Mod. Lang. exam. will be held tomorrow.

June 6, Wednesday. Mass in Chapel 8.50 – repose of soul of T. Hinchey; his father and mother were present. Confessions today in preparation for the feast of Corpus Christi. Fr. Smith was in Fr. Quinn’s place – the latter is ill – Fr. Blakely & Fr. Dooley heard. Mod. Lang. Exam 1.20-2.30

June 7, Thursday. Corpus Christi. Class did not begin until 9.30 today so that all might have a chance to receive Holy Communion in their own churches – it was announced yesterday.

June 8, Friday. Contest in 4 regular verbs between both sections of February class 9.15 10.30. Marks for May-June close at noon today. Science exam all classes 12.45 to 2.00 At 2.00 in Auditorium, in presence of the school, distribution of cups, medals, etc. won in Field Day games. At first recess today in V.P.’s office drawing for places in speaking at Elocution Contest.

The Lunch Counter will not be opened next week. N.B. All the exams are set by the V.P. usually after consultation with the various teachers.

June 9, Saturday. Reception into the Guard of Honor: Missa Coram Sanctissimo – sermon by Fr. Fisher – Solemn Benediction. Breakfast in the playroom. The Guard of Honor was organized by Mr. L Wheeler SJ.; the membership was closely limited this year – only a few first year boys were admitted (27 in all). The members receive Holy Communion daily, or twice weekly or weekly. There is a copy of the Constitution in the Archives. We began at 7.00 today & finished Benediction by 8.45

June 11, Monday. Exam in Eng. Literature for all classes 9 to 10.30. Examen in Catech. for all classes 10.50 to 12.15. Vacat at 12.15. All this (Examination) week there will be no class in the afternoon, except tomorrow for drill. This order was suggested by Fr. Rector, so as to give teachers more time for correcting papers, etc.

June 12, Tuesday. Regular class A.M. for all classes. History Examination for all classes 12.45 to 2.20. The boys had to be kept p.m. today as drill in Armory was scheduled for today. Drill 2.20 to 3.45 in 8th Regt. Armory. Last drill of school year. Only Capt. Dillon present today. V.P. had to drill two combined Companies. The 8th Regt. Armory will probably not be open to us next year – it is to be given over to cavalry work (in back floor.)

June 13, Wednesday. Class 9 to 12.15 for 1st year. Class 9-10.30 for 2d & 3d years. Geometry exam in 3d year – 10.45-12.15 – Greek exam in 2d year 10.45-12.15. Vacat p.m.

June 14, Thursday. Class for all 9 to 10.30. Confessions during this period. Latin exam in all classes 10.45-12.15 Vac p.m. Some oral examinations were held today.

June 15, Friday. Feast of the Scared Heart. Greek examination for 3d year 9 to 10.30. Algebra in 1st & 2d year at same time. Boys were dismissed after exam except those due for orals. Notice given that attendance Monday is obligatory

June 16, Saturday. Feast of St. John Francis Regis, Patron of the school. No celebration this year as the feast falls on Saturday. Some few of the classes went on their outing today. There should be no outing unless the professor of the class has all his required papers (of the leaders) corrected & marks handed into the office.

June 18, Monday. Closing Day. Final Elocution Contest & awarding of medals. A change was made for the medals this year. A gold medal for excellence and a silver medal for merit was awarded in each class – except the February classes. So there were 28 medals in all including the 2 Elocution medals. Heretofore only one medal each for Latin, English, Cat. & Alg in each year of the course i.e. 4 medals in each year no matter how many classes in the year.

Exercises began at 10.00 Junior Eloc., first, then senior. The school orchestra furnished the music – Distribution of medals followed immediately. The V.P. read list & Rev. Fr. Rector gave out the medals. The decision of judges was sent up to the stage after they had made their decision. All was over about 12.30. Fr. Rector made a brief speech. Some of the boys brought their father, mother, sister, etc. The boys were all told to be present as this is considered a school exercise. Next year our first graduation will be held & it will take place at night – on the Monday after the feast of St. John F. Regis, this is our set day for closing. School reopens Sept. 10

Two of the classes held a banquet in the school building this p.m. Other classes will have their outings during the week. 31 members of 3 Yr. F will camp out for a few days (Wed. to Sat. incl.) near Wharton, N.J. Mr. Kelly is to be with them all the time – day & night. Their class teacher will go down daily.

June 23, Saturday. Registration Day – Very few registered today, 38 in all, & some few pending: last year there were 55 on Saturday & the large crowd came Monday. Mr. Reilly assisted today – no scholastic. 3d year F boys are to return from their camping-out trip today

June 25, Monday. 2d Registration Day – very busy 9 to 1.00 registering new boys. About 102 applied – this is below last year’s number. There are about 150, counting some whose marks [are unclear?], who have not applied in person, etc.

Busy in the office all the rest of June & early July entering records in Book & sending out Condition notices. Condition exams will be held Sept. 6 & 7th School will reopen Sept. 10th

We have to give out contract for making chemistry laboratory furniture etc this month.

The office was opened during first week of Sept. for registration and preparing condit. Exams. Registration was brisk during the week. Notice of reopening was sent to Catholic News, as usual. Condition exams. Were held Sept 6th & 7th – 9 to 1.30

Monday, Sept. 10. Instauratio scholorum – schola brevis. All the boys were sent to the Auditorium at 9.40. The classes for former students were then announced & they went at once to the classes for a short session. The 4th Year classes (3 sections) are on the 4th floor, the 3d & 2d year classes are on the 2d floor, as last year, and the 1st year classes on the 1st floor. Fr. Reilly spoke to the new boys about the rules and regulations. Then they were assigned to classes (by sizes as usual) [We put the size on the registration card when the boy registers.] Teachers brought the boys from the Auditorium to the classrooms. 6 sections of 1st year boys. Tuesday, Sept. 11. Class = 9.30 to 10.15, Recess 10.15-10.30, Class 10.30 to 11.30. At 11.30 all convene in Auditorium where Rev. Fr. Rector addressed them. The boys were dismissed at noon-time. Books are on sale now in the lunch room, as there will be no lunch served until Thursday. The chemistry tables have not yet arrived nor have the tablet arm chairs. We shall have to delay the opening of chemistry classes until the teacher’s table arrives – The Kewannee Co is supplying it. Registration 586

Wednesday, Sept. 12. Full day of class today. The boys were warned yesterday to bring their lunch as the Counter would not be open. Fr. Reilly, P of D, will manage the Lunch Dept. supplies, etc. this year. Registration 586 – some few old boys are yet to return – some [of] them are being kept from registering because of failure to satisfy “conditions”. 216 new boys present.

Thursday, Sept.13. Regular order – full class day. Schedule not perfected yet – classes are running a special schedule till Monday. 4th year boys have the privilege of using main stairway at all times – they also come down to recess & lunch a few minutes before the other classes. 4th Year H attended in a body the funeral of W. Sweeney’s father. Fr. D. W. Hearn prayed for today. Lunch counter was opened today.

Friday, Sept. 14. Regular order. Confessions at 12.45 as usual. 4 Confessors; about 375 boys went to confession. Fr. David W. Hearn SJ. died today 8 a.m. at Windsor, Vermont. Blood pressure, etc. He is the father of Regis High School.

Monday, Sept. 17. There was a Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of Fr. D.W. Hearn in the lower church at 9.00. Only Regis boys present. The parish Mass was in the upper church. Fr. Kilroy V.P. said the Mass. Fr. Rector was at Holy Cross for the funeral, which was held today. Modern language classes in 4th & 3d year began today. Reorganization meeting of Senior Sodality at 2.30 p.m. Mr. Hayes is the Moderator this year also. Regular schedule started today – except for 4th year.

Tuesday, Sept. 18. Regular order. Catech. lectures & Elocut. began in First year. Registration 595 – 220 new boys.

N.B. There is Mod. Lang. Class every day in 3d year The new order goes into effect for this class this year. There is no German class for first year as only two boys elected German

Friday, Sept. 21. Regular order. Confessions usual time, 4 Confessors part of time – finished by 2.00 o’clock. Fr. Dorr began Physiol. lectures today to two sections of 3d year. The other two sections take Zoology from regular teacher: they will have Physiol. next term. Junior Sodality met today. Only last year’s members were at the meeting. The boys of First year classes will be admitted later on.

Monday, Sept. 26. Regular order – Mass meeting to arouse interest in Athletics, 2.20 p.m. in Auditorium.

Friday, Oct. 5. First Friday. Regular order a.m. P.M. Catech. omitted as the visit took place. Subjects usually begun at 1.00 & 1.45 were taken at 12.45 & 1.30. Visit at 2.00. This will be the order for First Fridays. Fr. D. Quinn gave the instruction and Benediction.

Tuesday, Oct. 9. Notice received from Major Green [?], supervisor of this zone, that drill would begin today, at Armory 94 & Park. Capt W.C. Woods, the drill master for this year, came to the school at 2.30, as it was raining & we didn’t wish to send the boys out in the rain. First day is reorganization day. We shall have the necessary papers filled out by the boys.

Monday, Oct 15. Mr. O’Malley unable to teach today owing to a slight operation performed Thursday. V.P. and P.D. took class.

Tuesday, Oct 16. V.P & PD. Still conducting classes in 2 Year B. Slips were filled out during 1st period today by all who are obliged to drill – a new form sent out by Military Tr. Comm. Drill at 2.30 in Armory Park Ave & 94 St. Capt. Woods was not there. A Lieutenant Stecker [?] said that he was told to report to Lieut Conger [?] – Lt. Conger was unable to be present today, however.

Wednesday, Oct. 17. Marks for Sept-Oct closed today 2.30 Mr. O’Malley still unable to teach: he will return to class tomorrow. Fr. Lupi will take 1st Spanish today (Mr. O’M class)

Friday, Oct. 19. Confessors today at usual time – 4 Confessors. The Tablet arm chairs for chemistry class were delivered here Wed. The lecture table has not yet been located (sent by freight from Wis. over a month ago)

Tuesday, Oct. 23. First Reading of Marks of scholastic year in Auditorium at 11.15. Fr. Rector, V.P., & teachers were on the stage (it took 45 minutes to read the lists). Drill in Armory 94 st & Park Ave at 2.30 (dismissed here at 2.20). Those who are 16 & those who will be 16 this scholast. Year – also about 13 boys from Loyola School – were present for the drill. Lieut Kluge was in charge assisted by Capt. Sullivan & one other.

Wednesday, Oct. 24. Liberty Loan Day – Regular order in a.m. (a severe wind & rain storm all morning): meeting in auditorium in p.m. after lunch for Liberty Loan. Speeches made by boys – Lunch Assoc. & Athlet. pledged money for a $50.00 bond each – one of boys also pledged money for a bond. Tomorrow the boys are to bring contributions (at least 25¢ each) to buy $50.00 bonds. Meeting over at 1.45, school dismissed. Mr. Kelly (1yr.C) did not report today, V.P. & P.D. took the class.

Thursday, Oct. 25. Contributions brought in today for Liberty bonds – about enough subscribed to get 3 bonds at $50.00

Friday, Oct. 26. Joe Hargroves’ mother was buried from our church today. A delegation of 6 boys from Joe’s class & a delegation of 6 from John’s class were sent to the Mass. The Prefect Disc. appointed the boys.

Saturday, Oct. 27. Chem. Lecture Table was delivered here today. We bought 7 bonds ($50.00 denomination) from Guaranty Trust Co. in the name of the boys. $50.00 given by one class (money they had collected for football suits); the other classes contributed $150.00

Monday, Oct. 29. Chemistry lectures were begun today – a temporary table is erected in Chem. Laboratory – lectures there until the table can be set up in Lecture room. All 3 sections are together for the lecture at 11.30

Tuesday, Oct. 30. No drill in Armory today owing to rain and also to condition of Armory. We had the boys in the auditorium for a talk. Lieut. Kluge and Capt. Sullivan were here. The new chemistry table is connected (ad tempus); it will have to be taken up again to replace a board broken in transit.

Wednesday, Oct. 31. Major Greer called at school today to say that the Regt. Armory would not be available for drill for a couple of weeks. We arranged to have the officers sent here for drill for the present. Confessions at 2.30 for the Sodality members.

Thursday, Nov. 1. All Saints Day – Holyday of obligation. No class today

Friday, Nov. 2. All Souls Day – Fr. Rector said the 3 masses in the chapel 7.30 – he began the 3d mass at 8.40 so that those boys who desired to do so could attend.

Monday, Nov. 5. Boys were reminded of our custom of making visits to the chapel during November for the souls in Purgatory. Debating Society meeting today – 1st & 3d Monday of each month.

Monday, Nov. 19. Mr. J. C. Borayere (Schweitzer) was engaged to teach the higher class of French. He began his duties today.

We gave to the Little Sisters of the Poor 3 ½ barrels & one large bag of potatoes, 3 barrels of apples, 2 barrels of cabbage & some canned goods. The boys were requested each to bring one potato (yesterday) and one apple (today). The result was a very substantial gift to the Little Sisters. All 3 sections of 4th year in chem. Last period today. Mr. Kelly teacher of 1st Year C will have to report for duty at the Navy Yard on Monday next (1st Class Yeoman), so we lose a very successful teacher. 3d year Eloc. & Cat in Lecture Room today & hereafter.

Mr. Kelly teacher of 1 Year C is to report to the Navy Yard for duty on Monday next so we shall be obliged to secure another teacher, if possible, for that class.

Dec. 2, Sunday. The soft coal in the coal cellar took fire (spontaneous combustion) and we had the firemen here today from 2.30 to 5.00 working at it. They soaked the coal with water and forced a great deal of it out into the Engine room. Fr. Martin discovered the fire when he went down to feed the cat.

Dec. 3, Monday. We were able to have heat today despite the fire of yesterday. Mr. Kelly’s class kept intact today. V.P., P.D. & Mr. Egan took it

Dec. 8, Saturday. Feast of Immaculate Conception

Capt. Sullivan gave a talk (10-11 A.M.) to the officers who wished to come for instruction. Snow late this morning.

Dec. 10, Monday. Mr. Egan teacher of 1B was transferred to 1 Year C & 1 Year B was divided up among the other 1st year classes. Sodality celebration at 2.30 in honor of Mary Immaculate. Fr. D. Quinn gave the instruction. Benediction by V.P.

Dec. 11, Tuesday. Too cold for drill in the Armory today. Drill held at the school in the playrooms. It will be here at the school during the cold weather.

Dec. 14, Friday. Slight snow-fall yesterday a.m. – very heavy storm last night – drifts etc – car service blocked. Many absent especially in 1st year

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR TEACHERS (Dec 14)

Do not have the classroom windows open wider than is necessary to ventilate the room and to keep the air fresh.

The reason for this request is that we must use our coal sparingly. If the windows are left open this is impossible. For open windows in the classroom require high pressure in the boilers in order to keep the thermostats regulated. High pressure in the boilers requires the use of much more coal daily than we can afford, considering our present supply.

Dec. 20, Thursday. 1 Year F had Xmas reunion in afternoon. Rehearsal of 1 D’s play.

Dec. 21, Friday. Each of extern teachers received (de more) a Xmas token of 5.00 Regular order – confessions, etc. At 2.00 all classes went to auditorium to witness Characteristics from Dickens’ Xmas Carol – given by boys of 1 Year D in costume. Over about 2.45 Xmas holidays begin – classes will be resumed Thursday Jan. 3, 1918. Xmas reunion of 3B in p.m. today

N.B. Our coal has been burning up in the fire for some time: it is bituminous – some cartloads were put in on a rainy day – hence, spontaneous combustion. It is very difficult to hire anyone to work at turning it. Yesterday & part of today some of it was wheeled out into boiler room, so that we shall probably be able to get at all the burning portions now.

During the holidays some of the classes will assemble in the school building on different days for Xmas reunions. However, it will not be possible to have any heat in the building at any time during vacation, owing to the need there is of economizing in the use of our coal: owing to the war conditions it will be very difficult to obtain another supply.

Thursday, Jan. 3. Classes were scheduled to begin today but as the intense cold of the last week did great damage to steam and water pipes the opening had to be deferred until Monday. Steamfitters working day & night to get building in shape for Monday – steam kept up both day & night.

Monday, Jan 7. School reopened today. The Chemistry room not yet heated so 4th year classes had Greek instead of Chemistry. Mr. Egan was in Baltimore and could not get back for class – V.P. took the class. School dismissed at 2.00

Tuesday, Jan 8. Fr. Martin gave Chemistry lecture in each of the 4 year sections; ¾ hour in each. Military drill today. Lieut Wheeler assigned now in place of Capt. Newmann.

Wednesday, Jan 9. Chem lecture room in use again now Exam for corporals held in 2D room at 2.30. V.P. presided. Books to be corrected & rated by Capt. Sullivan & Capt. McDroyer. No public reading of marks – private reading in classrooms

Monday, Jan. 14. Repetition begins in all years except Frosh. Eng. Comp. exam., all classes 9-10.30

Tuesday, Jan. 15. Meeting in Auditorium 11.45 to urge the purchase of thrift stamps. Mr. Graham of the New York Govt. Office was present to explain system to the boys. Fr. Rector has been appointed a government agent for the sale of stamps. Drill in Auditorium 2.30 Capt. McDroyer succeeds Capt Sullivan as Commandant. The latter has gone to Spartansburgh. Capt. Wynne has also joined the Government forces.

Wednesday, Jan. 16. Repetition begins in First Year.

Friday Jan 18. Latin theme examination in all classes. Teachers made up & submitted exams & exam’d pupils of own classes. We usually make out all exams – this is an exception for present exams.
