About the Office of Council Member Shahana Hanif The Office of New York City Council Member Shahana Hanif represents the 39th Council District, which includes parts of Kensington, Borough Park, Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and the Columbia Waterfront. Council Member Hanif is the Chair of the Committee on Immigration and also serves on the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries, and International Intergroup Relations, the Committee on Education, the Committee on Governmental Operations, the Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities, and Addictions and the Committee on Criminal Justice. She is also the Co-Chair of the City Council's Progressive Caucus, as well as a member of the Women's Caucus and the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus.

Shahana Hanif is the first Muslim woman elected to the New York City Council, and the first woman to represent the 39th District. Born and raised in District 39 to Bangladeshi immigrant parents, Shahana has spent her life fighting for working-class families and a city rooted in care, equity, and justice for all. Her diagnosis at 17 with Lupus, an incurable chronic illness, and her subsequent experiences navigating the costly, nebulous healthcare system and inaccessible city were the catalysts for her organizing and commitment to public service. She will bring our movement's work for transformational change and a feminist, anti-racist city to City Hall.

Internship Description Council Member Shahana Hanif is seeking three (3) highly motivated high school and college 2023 Summer Interns who are dedicated to public service and have a shared vision for creating an anti-racist feminist New York City. This internship will be in a hybrid work-model based in the Brooklyn District 39 Office, located at 456 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11215 in combination with some remote work.

Hours are flexible but will generally run from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Summer interns will work between 20-30 hours a week. Internships will run for 6 to 12 weeks between June 2023 to August 2023.

Internship Responsibilities

Day to day tasks such as answering phone calls, directing phone calls to staff members, checking voicemails, checking and sorting mail.

Assist with Constituent Services by contacting New York City agencies, Mayoral offices, local partners and businesses, updating case records, and calling and communicating case updates to constituents.

Attend community meetings, hearings, briefings, and conferences. Take notes and write memos on key takeaways.

Canvass and flyer around the district to make resources available to residents. Research legislative and policy topics and assist on special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications

High school junior or senior or a college student enrolled in an accredited school. Ability to work in a hybrid remote & in-person environment for 20-30 hours a week Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure, political environment. Strong writing and research skills. Passion for public service, government, politics, and/or civic engagement Access to a reliable computer and internet connection for remote work

Preferred Qualifications

Residency in New York City Council District 39 GPA of 3.0 or higher Major in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Government or related

field Knowledge of New York City Government and City Council Functions Proficiency in Bangla or Spanish

Internship Description Council Member Shahana Hanif is seeking (1) highly motivated college or Masters student as a Legislative and Budget Intern who is dedicated to public service and has a shared vision for creating an anti-racist feminist New York City. This internship will be in a hybrid work-model based in the Brooklyn District 39 Office, located at 456 Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11215, Legislative Office, located at 250 Broadway, Suite 1731, New York, NY 10007, in combination with some remote work.

Hours are flexible but will generally run from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. The Legislative and Budget intern will work between 20-30 hours a week. Internships will run for one (1) to three (3) months between June 2023 ? August 2023.

The Legislative and Budget Intern will learn about the role of a City Council Member, assist in advancing her legislative and budget priorities by observing, researching, and proposing recommendations throughout the legislative process. The Legislative and Budget Intern will report directly to the Council Member's Legislative and Budget Director, Alexander Liao.

Internship Duties and Responsibilities

Launching policy briefs and proposals to raise awareness and propose innovative

solutions on various issues affecting New Yorkers.

Research and draft policy briefs, data points, recommendations. Present a policy brief to

the team on any municipal issue that they feel strongly

Develop and maintain a deep expertise in a policy area.

Observe, take notes, and draft summaries of City Council hearings as assigned to

communicate them to the Legislative and Budget Director and/or other staff.

Attend outreach meetings, take notes and contribute to internal strategy meetings in order

to further legislation sponsored and introduced by the Council Member.

Draft legislative service requests to initiate legislation in the City Council in a time-

sensitive manner and share with the Legislative and Budget Director for review.

Keep up to date with NYC/NYS Political News, flag relevant developments, and make

related recommendations.

Work with other staffers and interns to assist with special projects across the office, as

needed.

Required Qualifications
