HELP WANTED

Grade 9: Biology Careers Project

(Due: 10/1/2013)

(37 Points)

PROJECT: Create a “help wanted” poster for a specific biology career.

• Come to me as soon as you have your topic. No more than two students per class may use the same type of scientist. Be certain to have your topic approved before you begin.

Materials:

Poster board 18" x 24" provided (White or any color that will work best for your design.)

Ruler

Paper

Glue

Markers, colored pencils or other coloring supplies

Extra materials for decorating your poster (not required, but encouraged)

DIRECTIONS:

1. Research careers in Biology and choose one that interests you. The following websites may be of help:

2. Once you have chosen a life science career, then do further research to determine the skills needed for the position, the salary range the person could expect, the level of education needed, and details about what the person would be required to do “on the job”.

3. Title your board with the name of the career chosen followed by the word “wanted”. For example, MARINE BIOLOGIST WANTED.

4. Design your poster to include an image or several images that show the scientist at work, or the image(s) could be of things that relate to the field studied by the type of scientist you chose.

5. Write a few paragraphs that include:

• The skills needed for the position

• The level of education needed

• The salary range that can be expected

• The tasks that the scientist would do when on the job

6. The information in the paragraph should be based on the facts found in your research.

7. Cite your sources using the APA format. (See attached sheet for examples.)

8. The poster should be done neatly and with effort. Typing your work is the best option, but you may also write the work in your neatest penmanship. You may do your own illustrations or cut and paste images. Be creative and have fun with this project.

9. You will present your poster orally to the class.

10. Use the grading rubric below as a checklist to make sure that you have met all of the guidelines for this project.
