$270 Million Winners

The grand prize in this week's Mega Millions lottery drawing, $270 million, went go to one couple from South Georgia.

Robert and Tonya Harris from Bulloch County, Georgia became millionaires when their Mega Millions numbers, 12, 22, 19, 7, 13, and mega number 10, were drawn.

In an interview posted on WSAV .com, the couple said they rarely play the lottery, but this time the couple used their grandchildren's birthdays, something they've never done before.

"They're my life. Them grandkids are everything I work for, strive for, to make sure they have a good life, and now they're going to have a good life," Robert Harris said in the report.

Mr. Harris, a structural steel and iron worker, reportedly called his employer,

Quinlain Enterprise, Saturday morning to

tell them that he plans to retire.

The winning ticket from Friday night's

drawing was bought at Flash Foods 70 in

Portal, Georgia, said Tandi Reddick, Geor-

gia

Lottery

spokeswoman. Por-

tal is about 200 miles

southeast of Atlanta.

"We're very excit-

ed -- it's caused a

buzz in this small

town," said Billy

Hodges, general

manager of Clyde's

Market 70, which he

said formerly was

called Flash Foods 70.

Harris said he plans to buy a new truck

-- a GMC extended cab -- and spend

more time at home with his family.

The couple opted for the cash option,

bringing their winnings down to $164 million.

Another 207 players matched four num-

bers, plus the Mega Ball number -- good

for third prizes of $10,000 each.

Our 25th Anniversary Edition

Lotto News Notes

Lotto New$ Is 25 Years Old! Playing the lottery is now just something regular players do, no muss, no fuss. But it wasn't always that way. In the early days of the State lotteries, circa March, 1983 when we started, there were only a five states (N.Y.-11/78, N.J.5/80, Pa.-4/82, Mass.-11/82 and Ill.-2/83) in the lottery business. At that time winners of Lotto Jackpots were often front page news items in major newspapers and were regarded as community heros. Lotto drawings were held only once a week and in New York City. The four digit numbers had just started to be drawn six days a week. Up until November 21, 1982 they had only been drawn twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights. In those early days when a Lotto jackpot would hit $5 million we would see long lines of people waiting to play winding out of lottery agent's stores and down the block. The nightly newscasts would lead off with people waiting on lotto lines asking what they would do if they won. That was why, back in the beginning of 1983, we had an idea. That idea was to publish a paper about the Lottery. A paper that would educate lottery players. A paper that would provide strategies and systems designed to give players a better chance of winning. A paper that would give them current statistics for each lottery game. But, nobody else was doing such a paper. There were no guidelines to follow. There were no existing systems to use. All would have to be developed. Quite a formidable task. So, after much consideration, and quite a few meetings that last-

ed into the wee hours of the morning, we finally decided on a format and the information we would publish. On February 23, 1983 our first issue (dated March 1, 1983) of Winning Number$ hit the stands. The Winning Number$ name was changed to Lottery New$ in November 1989, and finally to Lotto News in July 2002.

Looking back, as I did this week, I see how crude our first sixteen page issue really was. It contained 5 and one quarter pages of just past numbers and four pages of "world news." Thrown into this mix were directions for the games, two columns by "Monte Win," our original columnist, and two articles written by myself.

Compared to this week's issue, I am surprised that anyone bought that first issue--but they did. And the issues quickly got better.

Shortly after that first issue I got a phone call from a lady who introduced herself as a commodities features trader who had been charting lottery numbers as a hobby. Her name was Gail Howard. After meeting with her at our office she began a new column called "Charting the Lotto Numbers" in our March 22, 1983 issue.

Over the last 25 years Gail has greatly refined her own systems. She has developed a much easier (and more complete) system for wheeling lotto numbers. It is

Urban Kress Hospitalized

Regular readers know that long time Lotto News columnist Urban Kress has been having health problems for some time now.

In late February things came to a head and Urb went to the hospital for surgery. He returned home last Sunday, after ten days in the hospital.

Everyone here at Lotto News wishes him a speedy and complete recovery.

In the meantime Vince Conti has been doing a superb job on page 15 with his own Take-5 system.

I say superb not because I like his work, but because many readers have written in saying that they used his system and won with it.

available in either book or computer form (see page 5).

Some other milestones along the way for us include:

? In our April 5, 1983 issue we introduced the Lotto Rotation Tables based on the New York Lotto rotation system. These evolved into an earlier version of the Rotation Tables we know today on page 7 of this issue.

? The June 28, 1983 issue gave us our third columnist. In that issue Roy Siano introduced his Lotto Stats column and I was later to collaborate with him to produce this publication, Lotto News.

Our Little Secret

F or the fun of it I'm going to give you the hidden side of 6127, which hit on one of my lucky numbered days, 2/16/08, which was also a trigger day. The hidden side of the numbers 6127, are the numbers 8372, which also gives us the opportunity to play; 837, 372 and 728. Now lets keep this information to ourselves. I have found that when I give numbers to every one on my email list. And then go down to play them I find that number has sold out. I don't think you would like to go down to play one of these numbers and then are told that: "It is all sold out." So keep this information to yourself so we can see if we have hit on another brilliant idea. If
