Deneen / Dineen / Denoon/ Denune

From: “The Deneen Page” ()

I've collected bits of info....

The surnames Deneen / Dineen / Denoon/ Denune sometimes appear in the same family branch. If you lookup Deneen in a surname book you will find that the name in Irish means, "grandson of little Donn".  More research needs to be done here.

I saw a code / coat of arms in a book (black & white) described as: "Azure two swords in saltire points upwards argent pommels and hilts are between four roses. There is a naturally colored stag's head above the sheild and helmet. "

This picture was sent to me by Phillippe Dinant of Switzerland who is the founder of "The Association of the Dinant Families and Relatives", in Neuchatel, Switzerland.  See more about Dinant below.  (Irish Book of Arms)

"O'Dinneen" The Dinneen surname is seldom found with the 'O'prefix. It is a name of Co. Cork in Ireland. The Dineens descend from the O'Duinnin sept of that county, and are anciently of the corca Laoidhe. The family served as poets and antiquarians to the McCarthy Mor and the Sullivans. Dinan and Dynan are variant spellings in Co. Cork. Some of the clan adopted the English surname of Downing, a name of Cork and Kerry. O'Hart gives 'O'Dinan or Downing as chiefs of Uaithne, now the barony of Owneybeg in Limerick. At the turn of the last century Dineen and Dinneen were the two preferred spellings of the name, both of which were centered in Co. Cork. Earlier in the census of 1659, Dinane was a principal name of county Cork".

Dinan/Dynan/Dinant  are of Celtic origin. They are found in France (Brittany) in the 10th century in the city of Dinan and in Belgium toward the 11th/12th centuries, in the city of Dinant (once Deonan).  The Dinand family of Belgium were in the La Rochelle area of France via a dutchwoman who came to France to trade.  The original name was Dinan/Dinant, but the "d" letter appeared in the name sometime around 1650.  According to Phillipe, his ancestors are originally from Belgium, in the city of Neufchateau, and he has information back to 1630.

The Dinan/Dynan families met July 17th in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada for the Irish festival.  I hope to gather more information on these distant cousins soon.

DENEEN-A HUGUENOT FAMILY

by Ken Hale

The 16th century in France witnessed the most unspeakable acts of indignity of man against man in the name of religion.  It was the century of the Reformation. Notwithstanding the rages and threats of the Catholic Church, the Protestant churches grew as the persecution grew.  In 1571, there were 2150 churches with 10,000 members; in 1581 their membership grew to over 200,000.

An edict was passed in 1540, "under pain of high treason it is prohibited to give solace, support, or refuge to the Reformed Religion."  Unspeakable atrocities were commited to supress the hated doctrines.  Hated, not because they wished to overthrow the throne but because they wished to worship God in the old simple manner, according to the dictates of their conscience.

On August 24, 1572, sunday, St. Bartholomew's Day, a plot to annihilate the movement was executed.  Huguenots had been invited to participate in the nupial festivities of Henry IV, Henry of Navarre.  The plot was hatched by Charles IX of Valois, his mother Catherine de Medici, and the Duke of Guise.  Such pillage, destruction, fire, murder, and mutilation has never been equaled by Goths, Huns, or vandals.  Huguenot victims were stabbed, chopped with halbards, thrown from windows, and thrown into the Seine, just to mention a few means of dispatching them.

After ascending to the throne of France, Henry, who was reared in a protestant background, granted to the Huguenots the Edict of Nantes on 13 April 1593.  The Edict gave "perpetual and irrevocable" liberty of conscience, free exercise of religion, churches of their own, ministers, also their own judges and garrisons, and paid for their own troops.  After Henry's death in May 1610 to an assassin's dagger, the social and political equality enjoyed for 22 years by the Huguenots changed to persecution and disintegration.

By the time Louis XIV ascended to the throne, the plight of the Huguenots had worsened. Influenced by Cardinal Mazarine, Louis revoked the Edict of Nantes on October 8, 1685 and vowed to exterminate the Huguenots.  The Huguenots were driven into exile and banished from the kingdom.

It is a shame to capsulize this one hundred or so years of history.  It does, however, tell us why our ancestors, the Deneens, as well as thousands of others fled France to find refuge in Holland and the British Isles.  Our family legend says that the Deneen's fled to Northern Ireland.

Hoping to secure even greater religious and political freedom as well as economic advantages, some families decided to migrate to America.  Often a younger family member would come first to America and upon becoming settled would write to the rest of the family to come to America.

A daughter, Margaret was the first Deneen.  Perhaps she married a man destined for America or she had signed on as a bride for a groom unseen in the new world.  There are numerous versions of how she came.  A common one, and possibly apocryphal, was to the effect that she attended a party aboard a ship.  While the party was in progress, the ship pulled anchor and headed for America.

In any event her father and siblings came to join her and her husband, DeCamp.  The mother apparently died before or during the voyage.  A granddfather of Samuel Hackett Deneen, according to one story, was two years old when he arrived.  Upon disembarking, the family made it's way to Hunterdon, NJ to join Margaret and her husband.  It seems Margaret had died before the family arrived.  DeCamp doubtless helped the family get settled.

The first record thus far found of a Deneen in America is in Hunterdon County, N.J. 1778-1797, concerning tax lists, by TLC Genealogy, Miami, Fla, page 47: "Deneane, James, Lebanon, 1778-1785".  In the same list was the name of Dr. Gideon DeCamp, Hopewell,1778-1785.  Was this Margaret's widower, or his descendant?  the name Peter Rodenbough, of Lebanon, also was listed for the years 1778-1785.  This name had numerous variations in spelling.

There were at least 3 Deneen brothers, all born in New Jersey: James, Joseph, and Samuel Hackett.  There may have been a William also.  A sister, Elizabeth was born in 1758. This researcher has no further information concerning William and Elizabeth.

1. American REVOLUTIONARY WAR Veteran JAMES DENEEN-NEW JERSEY- HUNTERDON CO. N.J. MILITIA, PRIVATE

2.  On 12 Oct. 1804, James Deneen, of Hamilton Co., Ohio purchased land in Range 1, Twp 4, Section 23 (Reily Twp, Butler Co.) in the Miami River Survey. On 12 Oct. 1810 he purchased another  parcel in section 27. Purchasers paid no taxes for 5 years after purchase.

3. On 30 July 1832, James Deneen filed an application and was granted a pension for his Revolutionary War Service. His sworn statement of that date in the Court of Common Pleas for Butler Co. follows: "That in the year 1769 he volunteered as a Minute Man in the company commanded by Capt.Thomas Jones of Hunterdon Co.,NJ which said company formed a part of a regiment commanded by Col. Taylor of the same county--that as a member of this company he was on an expedition from said county to Amboy(sic) and from there to Staten Island which lasted only 16 days--that afterwards he belonged to Capt. Hazlett's company also of Hunterdon Co. under whom he served on an expedition to Elizabethtown, NY--at which place he was detained one month--after which he was dismissed-that afterwards he was again called upon to service in the militia of said state under Lt. Bray also of the same county by who he was marched to Brumbrook (sic) where he remained for a period of one month after which he was again discharged--that he was again called out under said Capt. Bray and was under (General or George) Maxfield by whom the  forces under said Maxfield command were marched to a post on Raritan River."  "...states he was born on the 11th day of Nov. 1755 in the County of Hunterdon, State of New Jersey."

4. JAMES DENEEN was born 11 Nov. 1755 in Hunterdon County, NJ. The identity of his parents has not been established, perhaps the James Deneane mentioned above was his father. His mother died when he was a child and he was reared by a Peter Roddinbough (see above) who had emigrated to America about 1738-39 to Lebanon, Hunterdon County. Peter's wife was named Anna. James enlisted early in the Revolution and served at various times as a private. During his service he had camp fever and pleuisy, after which he was unable to endure the hardships of camp life, and went to work in a continental shoe factory. The length of his entire military service was about 2 years. After the Revolution, James started his westward migration, first settling in Maryland, close to the Pa. border. His brothers, Joseph and Samuel Hackett, had settled a short distance North in Bedford (now Fulton) County. Around 1800 he and Samuel pushed west to Ohio. Joseph remained in Pa. On 12 Oct. 1804, James Deneen, of Hamilton Co. Ohio purchased land in Range 1, Twp 4, Section 23 (Reily Twp, Butler Co.) in the Miami River Survey. On 12 Oct. 1810 he purchased another parcel in section 27. Purchasers paid no taxes for 5 years after purchase.

2. "Then there was a family tragedy.  Alexander L. Deneen, James' son was building a new house on the site of the log cabin James had built on the property.  He was working on the second floor when he threw a plank of wood out the window.  His wife had put their baby daughter out in the sun without telling her husband.  The plank hit the baby girl and killed her immediately.  For many years A.L. Deneen was unable to finish the house and didn't finish it for  five years.  I don't think he ever lived in it.  It was finally finished about 1831-32.  He sold part of the cemetery  to the Universalist Church for a church and burying ground.  Soon the  Universalist Church was in disfavor with the  area people and that's why A.L. buried his daughter in the Springdale Cemetery.  He and his wife are buried there, but his father and brother were never moved.  There is just a marker for the Deneen family.  The picture of the house is the house and the lady is pointing to the end of the house where A.L. threw out the plank that killed little Mary in 1826." : "I got all this information from a man we met at Bunker Hill cemetery.  He was the Church Sexton and took care of the Cemetery and church records.  He really  helped me with my Deneen's and Peggs.  The church is gone at Bunker Hill and it is now a park."  From Deneen homepage

1. Bill Richards has given the following directions to find the Deneen Family Cemetery at Deneen's Gap in Fulton County, Pa.Going Northbound on I-70, get off at exit 22 (State Hwy 731). At this point I-70 is running almost E-W. Continue west. As you approach the cross over to I-70, stay to the right and continue up T401. (Do not cross over I-70) About 50 yards north of the intersection is a dirt road on the right which leads to a clearing. The grave site is immediately to the right of the dirt road (just a few feet from the paved road) and back in some woods about 30 feet. The Deneen Cemetery, with a marble monument, a number of tombstones and surrounded by a fence, is back amongst some trees. Alongside and to the east of the Deneen Cemetery is another marble monument marking the grave sites of David Richards, his wife Melinda and daughter Catherine.

a. The National road was from Washington D.C. to St. Louis (East St. Louis, Illinois) and this route was selected for the journey. At a pass near Warfordsburg Brother Joseph DeNeen and his first wife became parents to a child that was the first born child in Buck Valley, Pa. at this time. I am a descendant of Joseph. Several days after the child was born the mother died. The name of the mother and child is lost but Joseph took the child back to New Jersey and I have no trace on this line. Joseph Deneen's first wife died giving birth in Pa. The child was taken to New Jersey to live with relatives. `The family did build a cabin for Joseph and his wife and left for Ohio and had no knowledge of the death of the wife. I have a photo of the cabin which lasted untilabout 1900. Joseph return from New Jersey to the cabin. The Bishop family had lived nearby the cabin but moved to Kentucky with their children. On the way to Kentucky Mr. and Mrs. Bishop were killed by the Indians but the children were allowed to walk back home to Buck Valley, Pa. and one child was Amy Bishop. Joseph DeNeen married Amy Bishop and had about 11 children.

1. JOSEPH DENEEN was born in 1760, New Jersey. He married and apparently started on the westward trip, probably to Ohio, with his brothers James and Samuel Hackett. His wife was about to give birth and could travel no farther. A stopping point was selected in what became known as Deneen's Gap, in Buck Valley. The child was the 1st white child born in Buck Valley. His wife died soon thereafter. Joseph carried the child back to New Jersey, then returned and married Amy Bishop. Amy was born 12 Jan. 1778. Amy's father, John bishop, came from England, settled in New Jersey, came to Bedford Co., Pa, then removed with his family to Kentucky. John Bishop and his wife died in Kentucky. Their 3 children, Jacob, Amy and David, returned on foot to Bethel Township, Bedford Co., in 1803. Joseph built a tannery and followed tanning for many years, also farming and hunting. It is unknown why he remained in the Gap when his brothers, James and Samuel continued on to the west. He and his wife Amy, lived out their lives in Buck Valley. Joseph died 17 Dec. 1821 and Amy died 15 Nov. 1862. They are buried in a family plot on the Deneen Farm. The original headstones long ago disappeared. A common stone for all persons buried there has been erected by their descendants. Buck Valley was originally known as Whipper's Cove or Sarah's Manor. The valley is about 4 miles wide and 20 miles long. It is surrounded by mountains, excepting on the south. There are 3 Gaps: Maud McKeel's, northwest, Barnes, southwest in Ray's Hill, and Deneen's Gap, east in Sidling Hill. Buck Valley is located in Union Township, taken from a part of Bethel Township on 19 Jan. 1864. Joseph and Amy (Bishop) Deneen had eleven children:
