Seventh Grade Honors ELA

Summer Reading Assignment

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students:

Welcome to 7th Grade Honors!

We are pleased that your child will be taking Honors English and Social Studies next year. As you know, the honors program is fast paced and challenging; designed for students who, like your child, are innately interested in English and Social Studies. They have outstanding reading, writing, and conceptual skills and they are eager to work hard to learn as much as they can.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our summer reading program. Students entering the English and Social Studies Grade 7 Honors program are encouraged to read as much as possible during the summer vacation.

Students will be provided with a copy of My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier, the assignment, and a rubric. Students are asked to read the novel and complete the Open-Ended Discussion Questions worksheet. Additionally, students will be required to participate in a graded Socratic Seminar, based on their connections to the novel, during the third week of September. Students will be using their Open-Ended Questions worksheet during the seminar to help guide the discussion. Your child’s ELA teacher will introduce and familiarize your child to Socratic Seminar format and Honors expectations prior to the assessment.

Have a great summer!

Sincerely,

Mary Ann Politi
