Growing Margins Fuel Exxon Mobil's Gushing Profits

Oil firm makes big gains in sales and earnings for second quarter as crude prices rise.

Strong margins drove ExxonMobil's second-quarter earnings ahead of The Street's expectations, lifting the oil firm's languishing stock price.

On Thursday the company reported second-quarter sales rose to $92.5 billion, from $74.5 billion, while earnings jumped to $7.6 billion, from $4 billion, a year ago.

ConocoPhillips Report Solid Quarterly Results

HOUSTON -- Oil companies ConocoPhillips and reported significant boosts in second-quarter earnings.

ConocoPhillips recorded earnings of $4.2 billion, compared with second-quarter 2009 earnings of $900 million. Excluding a net benefit of $1.7 billion primarily from dispositions and an impairment its second-quarter 2010 adjusted earnings were $2.5 billion.

Valero Records Best Quarter Since Q3 2008

Revenue at the San Ramon, Calif.-based oil company rose to $53 billion, from $40.2 billion. Sales were lifted by higher prices for crude oil,

Service Station Dealers of America Response to Calls for BP Boycotts

S S D A - N E W S

The following was sent to the Washington Post and various other media outlets:

The smell of blood is in the air again and, as usual, innocents will be harmed. This mob mentality forming against BP-branded service station owners is frightening. As an organization that represents thousands of dealers in the United States, we have to say that we understand the frustration the public feels. But as for all of the special-interest groups calling for this boycott of BP stations, we say “SHAME ON YOU”! You are actively destroying families. We are a trade association and we understand the value of publicity, but to promote your organization (or your own name as a pundit) at the expense of peoples’ livelihoods is unforgivable and you would be quick to condemn others who behaved in this fashion under similar circumstances.

A message to the public

“PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE HARM YOUR ACTIONS WILL CAUSE”. We will not defend BP here and make no attempt to do so. But please consider the following facts:

• BP owns very few service stations in this country. Almost all of the major refiners are out of the retail business.

• The majority of BP service station dealers are contractually obligated to buy the BP branded product from a specific supplier for years at a time. (The same is true for all branded dealers.)

• When you stop buying BP product and there is a surplus of supply, BP will simply and quickly wholesale it to one of the large chain stores that sell gasoline without a brand name – you know who they are.

• These dealers exist on slim margins and will suffer serious financial harm quickly – these family businesses will undoubtedly lose everything: life savings, college tuition savings and finally, their homes, in an effort to stay in business. We witness this on a regular basis.

As a consumer, do you really want to harm families just like yours in a misguided attempt to get back at a corporation that is far-removed from your neighborhood? It may be a cliché to talk about businesses in the community but don’t forget how much these folks give back to the neighborhood with sponsorships for sporting teams, scholarships at local schools, car washes for any cause – the list goes on. Please take a few minutes to think about what you are really trying to accomplish. Unless you simply must draw blood of any kind, boycotting your local BP station will be a waste of your efforts. Please contact us if you’d like to know more about what it’s like to be a neighborhood dealer.

This message is endorsed by the Gasoline Retailers Association of Florida.

Future BP

Oil major beginning to discuss what form a restructured company might take

LONDON -- Directors at BP PLC have begun canvassing shareholders about plans to restructure the oil major in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, said MarketWatch, citing a report in U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times.

Options for "Future BP" include splitting up the group by selling its refineries and gas stations, scaling back its American operations and ramping up in house engineering and outsourcing, the paper said. It could also end up focusing instead on exploration in regions such as West Africa and Brazil, according to the report.

The paper quoted insiders as saying the discussions with shareholders are at an early stage, but will help set the direction of a formal review expected to be launched by BP's chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg.

Unstable Gas Prices Flummox Motorists

The volatile global energy market is more likely these days to drive pump prices up or down.

Washington – Summer is in full swing and the prices at the pump are reflecting increased demand and the recent unpredictability of the global energy markets, the Washington Post reports.

While gasoline prices aren’t nearly as high as July 2008, when fuel prices reached record levels, today’s prices are still fluctuating enough to confuse drivers who are thinking of summer travel plans. “It fluctuates a lot,” said James Cole, a software sales executive. “The instability in rates that causes a lot of consternation for everyone, no matter the income strata, in terms of how you’re going to manage your money.”

However, demand only plays a small part in fuel prices. Nowadays, global markets can impact the prices more directly. Hurricanes and rumors about oil field production in far-away places like Nigeria can cause daily and hourly swings. “It’s not even noontime and we’ve already had numerous price changes today,” said Paul Leonard, a fuel buyer with Carroll Independent Fuel. “It’s been very erratic. It seems that as time goes on, it becomes more and more erratic.”

With the recovery of the U.S. economy not taking off as expected, several analysts say prices have not risen as much as predicted earlier this year. “One of the few upsides we can look to from the [global economic worries] is that the retail gas prices have been surprisingly low this summer,” said Jason Schenker, president and chief economist at Prestige Economics. The real test of all this will come in August, that’s when most people travel.

The consumer

Keep the pressure on OPEC & the Oil Companies by conserving gasoline. Conserve, drive less and when demand is down, inventory increases. The only line OPEC & the Oil Companies understand is the bottom line.

EPA to Give Partial Waiver For E15

In September, the agency will grant the exemption for vehicles with model years 2007 and newer

Washington, D.C. – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will probably give a partial waiver for 15 percent ethanol blends of gasoline (E15) for model year 2007 automobiles and newer, the Bureau of National Affairs reports.

On July 1, Gina McCarthy, the agency’s assistant administrator for air and radiation, told attendees at a future of renewable energy conference that the EPA waiver could be granted in September.

“Now I will tell you that we are very confident, because of the way newer vehicles are constructed and engineered, that E15 will be amenable for use in newer vehicles,” she said. “As the vehicle gets older, we have less certainty about the use of E15.”

Growth Energy applied last year for an exception to let E15 gasoline be sold at the pump. The Clean Air Act only allows E10 fuel to be sold. In January, results from E15 testing by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on model year 2007 cars will be finished by mid-September, which will let EPA make a ruling on those vehicles. A decision on E15 in model year 2001 and newer vehicles will likely be forthcoming by Nov. 30, as DOE testing on those vehicles will be finished by then.

“We are very confident that in November, we can make a waiver decision on the use of E15 in those vehicles as well,” said McCarthy. “We are very positive about the outlook, but we're waiting for that data to come forward.”

McCarthy also revealed that the agency is testing E20 blends.

OPW Gets UL Approval

Nozzle, breakaway, swivel, valve receive UL listing for 85% ethanol

Cincinnati -- OPW Fueling Components said that it has received Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listing for its new 21Ge Series nozzles, ethanol swivels, breakaways and its 10 Plus Emergency Shut-Off Valve for use in applications containing ethanol concentrations up to 85%. This third-party listing was received after the company's products passed a rigorous testing process by UL.

"We are very proud to receive UL's listing on these products," said Rahul Deshmukh, OPW general manager for aboveground products. "As the industry leader in fueling innovation, our customers rely on us to lead the way with reliable solutions to meet ever-changing industry needs. We work hard to live up to this expectation. This UL listing for E85 illustrates our commitment to that end."

OPW's E85 UL-listed hanging hardware and under-pump equipment solution includes its green nozzle innovation, the OPW 21Ge Ethanol Nozzle, 241TPS-0492 hose swivel, 66V-0492 hose breakaway and 10 Plus Emergency Shut Off Valves (model 10P-0152E85).

Cincinnati-based OPW is a global leader in dispensing products, environmental systems, secondarily contained fuel delivery systems, fuel management systems and clean energy fueling products, including dispensing nozzles for vapor recovery, gasoline, diesel, LPG, hydrogen and CNG; swivels, breakaways, valves and fittings; underground and aboveground storage tank equipment, spill containers, overfill prevention devices, secondary containment sumps and flexible piping; tank gauging equipment and automated fuel management systems. OPW is part of the Fluid Management Segment of Dover Corp., Downers Grove, Ill.

Lottery Scammer(s) Cheating NY’s Small Shops

Beware of “rubber band bandit” scheme, which has defrauded 15 New York-area lottery retailers.

Albany, NY – New York State Lottery officials are searching for a thief (or thieves) who’s been scamming New York lottery retailers, absconding with hundreds of dollars in instant lottery tickets and cash, the New York Post reports.

The officials have warned retailers to be vigilant for a “rubber band bandit” or bandits who cheated at least 15 mom-and-pop stores in the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan.

The scammer’s M.O. includes walking into a deli, grocery store, or liquor store and requesting a large number of instant lottery tickets. After receiving the tickets, the crook requests a rubber band, envelope, or anything else that distracts the clerk.

When the clerk’s back is turned, he switches the stack of unused tickets with a stack of scratched-off tickets, placing a new ticket on top of the pile to make it appear untouched.

When the clerk returns, the thief claims he forgot his wallet and leaves the store, promising to return with money to finalize the purchase.

"He tries to lower your guard by being very friendly. Someone you wouldn't suspect," said Fatema Iqbal, owner of the Twins Deli in The Bronx, who said one such “rubber band bandit” stole $800 worth of $20 scratch-off tickets last month.

Theft is not reimbursable by New York’s lottery, though the agency sends alerts to vendors through computerized lottery terminals.

"Our goal is to protect our retailers and customers," said spokesperson Jennifer Givner.

More Credit Card Skimmers Found at Florida Gas Station

The discovery follows the discovery earlier this month of three skimming devices found at two other stations off Interstate-75

GAINESVILLE, FL – Two credit card skimming devices were found last week at a Gainesville, Florida gas station off Interstate-75, prompting local authorities to warn residents about paying at the pump at any area station, the Gainesville Sun reports.

"The Alachua County Sheriff's Office cannot guarantee the security of the citizens' personal credit card information at the gas pumps in Alachua County," said Lt. Steve Maynard, a spokesperson for the sheriff's Office.

Last week’s discovery follows the discovery earlier this month of three skimming devices at two other stations off Interstate-75. Subsequent to that discovery, authorities checked all gas stations at major interchanges along I-75 in Alachua County and found no additional skimmers. That indicates the devices had been recently installed at the Gainesville station.

"The gas station ownership and management have to take responsibility for protecting their customers and checking their pumps on a daily basis," he said.

The most recent skimmers were found by station employees, and Gainesville police spokesperson Cpl. Tscharna Senn advised residents to check their credit card statement for any illegal activity.

"We don't know for sure when these skimmers were put in, so we are asking everyone to be diligent about checking their credit card statement for the last month or so," Senn said.

Be sure to inspect for any tampering on the pumps every day and sometimes more than once. If someone looks suspicious or spending a lot of time at the pump, walk over and ask if they need any help. Be vigilant and take down tag numbers.

Serial ATM Thieves Discover Easier Method for Robbing Machines

Suspects have turned to using a master key and drill bit combination to steal money.

NEW YORK – A pair of New York-area ATM thieves, already linked to using a chain and car to rip up to 11 curbside ATMs from their foundations, has apparently discovered a way to rob the machines more easily, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In five thefts across Manhattan, the suspects have now turned to using a master key and drill bit combination to steal money, according to detectives. The key opens a steel door that covers the lower portion of the ATMs below the keypad, screen, and cash dispenser, and once those doors are open, the combination lock becomes visible. The thieves then drill into the combination dial to access the cash.

According to a police memo referencing the break-ins, "machines with additional side locks or iron straps are not targeted."

The last of the pair's 15 thefts occurred in May, and police speculate that they may have moved to another city to avoid detection.

Funny Money

Counterfeit bills are becoming more of a concern for small businesses, including convenience stores.

Pasadena, Calif. -- The number of bogus bills in circulation is growing, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Secret Service removed more than $182 million in fake U.S. money from circulation for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009 — more than twice the amount during the previous fiscal year.

Counterfeiters tend to target cash-based businesses, such as convenience stores, gasoline stations, quick-service restaurants and small grocers, to pass on their funny money. Increasingly, fake bills are cunningly designed and difficult to discover with an untrained eye.

At Pasadena’s Union 76 station, manager Valod Mehrabian uses his intuition and a small machine to detect the real from the fake. Typically, he’ll rub the bill to see if it feels real before running it through an ultraviolet light machine designed to show the thin line of fluorescent polyester thread present in legal currency. Experts say untrained clerks at small businesses often unwittingly accept counterfeit bills. Teaching cashiers how to detect a fake bill is one of the most effective ways of not getting scammed by counterfeiters.

In April, the federal government revealed its redesigned $100 bill, which has color-shifting ink and 3-D images on plastic strips. The new design will debut in February. The most commonly faked paper currency in the United States is the $20 bill.

State to force stores to post graphic signs vs. smoking

Massachusetts is poised to become the first state in the nation to force retailers to prominently display graphic warnings about the perils of smoking right where cigarettes are sold at tobacco sales racks and next to cash registers.

Images of ominously darkened lungs, damaged brains, and diseased teeth could start appearing before the end of the year in more than 9,000 convenience stores, pharmacies, and gas stations, if a proposal by the state Department of Public Health is approved as expected. Other posters would direct smokers to where they can get help to stamp out their habit. Retailers who refuse to display the signs within 2 feet of tobacco displays and cash registers could face fines of $100 to $300.

New York Smokers Flee to Border

Addison, Vt. -- Vermont tobacco retailers and convenience stores located near the border with New York state report selling more cigarettes to Empire State residents seeking to avoid that state's higher tobacco tax, The Associated Press reported. July 1 was the date New York increased its cigarette tax $1.60 per pack to $4.35. Vermont's cigarette excise tax is $2.24 a pack.

Dana Franklin, of the West Addison General Store, told the AP sales have gone up since the effective date. The same happened a few years ago when New York increased its tax, but sales later fell back after Vermont's tax increased, according to the report.

In addition, convenience stores in border towns are also reporting increased gas sales due to a disparity in the gasoline tax between the two states.

July 1 Cigarette Tax Hikes

N.Y., Hawaii, N.M., S.C., Utah see increases on tobacco

Washington -- Five states implemented cigarette tax increases on July 1: New York, $1.60 increase to $4.35 per pack; Hawaii, 40 cents to $3 per pack; New Mexico, 75 cents to $1.66 per pack; South Carolina, 50 cents to 57 cents per pack; and Utah, $1 to $1.70 per pack, reported The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. On May 1, Washington increased its cigarette tax by $1 to $3.025 per pack.

New York's increase will give it the highest state cigarette tax at $4.35 per pack, while South Carolina's increase its first since 1977 means it will no longer have the lowest cigarette tax in the nation. Missouri will now have the lowest cigarette tax at just 17 cents a pack. After the July 1 increases, the average state cigarette tax will be $1.45 per pack, while the federal government levies an additional $1.01 per pack.

States with the lowest cigarette tax rates are Missouri (17 cents per pack), Virginia (30 cents), Louisiana (36 cents), Georgia (37 cents) and Alabama (42.5 cents).

Texting while driving now illegal in 24 states

Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, and Wyoming became the latest states to make it illegal to for drivers to text message while in a moving vehicle. They join 19 other states that already had the rule in law books.

As of this morning, the following states have texting laws:

Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

Four more states already have plans to join them, bringing the total to 29 states. No texting laws take effect in Kansas on January 1, 2011, Kentucky on July 13, 2010, Louisiana on August 15, 2010, and Wisconsin on December 1, 2010.

VERC Receives Community Partnership Award from special needs community

Retailer honored for hiring more than 10% of workforce from the special needs community

Duxbury, Mass. -- VERC Enterprises Inc., a leading independent convenience

store and gasoline operation with 23 locations throughout eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire, was the recent recipient of a Community Partnership Award from Minute Man Arc for Human Services Inc. in recognition of the company's policy to hire workforce from the special needs community.

Leo Vercollone, CEO of VERC Enterprises, accepted the award from Marty Martini, executive director of Minute Man Arc during the agency's annual meeting held on June 9.

Vercollone was honored for exceeding a pledge made last fall to hire 10% of the VERC Enterprise workforce from the special needs community, a number that presently stands at 15.9%.

"VERC Enterprises reached out to Massachusetts-based employment programs in search of individuals to staff their convenience stores, gas stations and car washes, with Minute Man Arc providing five individuals who are now employed by VERC," said Martini. "We thank Leo for hiring from our populations, and for recognizing that all individuals want and need meaningful work in the community, making inclusion a reality for the individuals at Minute Man Arc."

Currently, VERC Enterprises has more than 175 employees and is actively recruiting new associates and assistant managers.

Petrofuse is pleased to announce the addition of C- Store Branding and Imaging to our services

RE-IMAGING Re-imaging has been around for quite sometime. And by now, most marketers large and small, branded and unbranded realize the value of their image and how it impacts their profits.

Majors and independent oil companies alike have spent millions to upgrade their stations, in terms of both general appearance and to establish a consistent image at all locations. Branded jobbers have been forced to upgrade their stations by their oil company suppliers who invest heavily in image incentive programs to help offset some of the costs. Meanwhile independent jobbers are discovering that they must provide a desirable image to stay competitive against the growing numbers of attractive and efficiently designed location.

The rewards for even the smallest changes can have a dramatic affect of revenue in both fuel and store. Costs and results will vary depending on whether the work is a simple superficial paint and decal or a complete rebuild.

Re-imaging can often mean much more than just remodeling. It may require area research to find a jobber's niche in that area and what is required to position himself properly in that market.

A new name or logo, for instance, can make a big difference. Your image should be as important as the price the customer sees. It has been proven that customers will choose a well groomed and lighted facility over the price of fuel to feel safe and clean. And they will return to you for the same reason.
