Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Incoming Eighth Grade Students:

We are excited to welcome your child to the eighth grade! Because the eighth grade team of teachers recognizes the importance of being prepared for the upcoming school year, we have included the following information in an effort to make your child’s start to the upcoming year as smooth as possible.

During the summer, your child is required to read The Outsiders, The Hobbit or The Secret Life of Bees. All students were supplied with a copy of their choice in June. If, for some reason, your child does not have a copy, one may be picked up in the middle school office. Students are strongly encouraged to read additional books throughout the summer.

The 2018-2019 8th Grade Required Materials Chart has been included with this letter. Please note that most subject-area teachers require a section in a binder with filler paper and associated materials. This year 8th graders will follow a block schedule. Students should plan to utilize two separate binders: one for ACE days and another for BDF days. They are expected to have a pen and pencil ready for every class; a pencil case clipped into the student’s binder is suggested. It is also helpful to have a stapler available at home as students are expected to organize and staple assignments before arriving to class. The district provides each student with an agenda book to be used throughout the year.

Earth Science and Common Core Algebra are high school level classes; the pace, quantity, and quality of work will exceed that of a middle school course. These courses will culminate in a New York State Regents Exam. World Language is also a high school level class; students will take the Checkpoint A exam for high school credit.

We are all aware that the participation of middle school children in a broad range of experiences is invaluable to their personal growth. We, therefore, encourage students to join in all that Farragut Middle School has to offer including a school newspaper, yearbook, plays, clubs, student government, and both intramural and interscholastic athletics. Please bear in mind, however, that the nature of 8th grade lends itself to a more rigorous curriculum, and at times, students may struggle with balancing both curricular and extracurricular expectations.

We are looking forward to working with you and your child as he or she experiences 8th grade and prepares for the transition into Hastings High School.

Sincerely,

Eighth Grade Team Teachers
