New York State Teacher Certification Examination: edTPA

New York State Teacher Certification Examination: edTPA

What is the edTPA?

The edTPA is a student-centered multiple measure assessment of teaching. It is designed to be educative and predicting of effective teaching and student learning.

Who is required to take this examination?

If you apply for your first certification on or after May 1, 2014 or if you applied for your first certification on or before April 30, 2014 but you will not meet all the requirements for the first initial certificate on or before April 30, 2014, you are required to pass the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) in addition to the other certification exams required for your certificate.

Which edTPA do I take?

You must complete the appropriate edTPA for your certification area to meet the edTPA requirement.

If you are in a dual program, (e.g., Childhood Grades 1-6 and SWD Childhood grades 1-6), you will need to complete the edTPA for the certificate you will be issued first.

If you do not complete the edTPA that corresponds to your certification area, you will need to retake the edTPA in the appropriate area.

Please see the chart below to determine which edTPA is required for the certification area(s) you have or will apply for.

If you are in a teacher education program, you should work with your faculty advisor to determine which edTPA to complete before registering.

Am I required to take an edTPA for each certificate I apply for?

You will only be required to complete and pass one edTPA. The edTPA for the first certificate that can be issued will be the certificate for which the edTPA is required.

For example, if you are seeking to be certified in both Physical Education and Health Education, you would need to determine which content area will be the first issued certification area. If you choose Physical Education as the first area, then you need to complete the CST for Physical Education and the corresponding edTPA, K-12 Physical Education. Then for Health Education as the additional certificate, you will only need to pass the CST for Health Education but not the edTPA in Health Education.
