Assignment Overview: Write a book review, similar in style and content to The New York Times book reviews (attached). This is an individual assignment. DUE FRIDAY MAY 14th

Assignment Requirements:

▪ At least two full pages long (no more than four!). Putting a ridiculous amount of space at the top of the paper does not count towards the two page requirement.

▪ Typed, double spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font

▪ Include a title for your review. For example: “The Scent of Green Papaya: A Vision of Vietnam as Yet Unscarred”

▪ Include in text citations and a works cited (reviews do not have this, but you need to do it)

▪ Submit it to me (beginning of class) and by the due date to avoid late points (which will accumulate until I have received both version of the assignment).

Preparation: Read the reviews and make notes on them about what is being discussed in each paragraph (see example notes on the film review for Scent of Green Papaya). Then answer the following questions:

Format:

1. How many paragraphs does each review have?

2. Approximately how many sentences are in each paragraph?

Style:

3. What do you notice about the use of personal pronouns (I, we, you) in the reviews?

4. What do you notice about the style of writing? Consider word choice (diction) and sentence structure.

5. How are the quotes used in the review?

Organization:

6. How is the information organized within the review? Do you notice a pattern?

7. Does each paragraph have a topic sentence?

8. Is there an introduction and conclusion?

Content:

9. How much of the plot is told? Does the review reveal the ending of the story?

10. List all the types of information contained in the reviews:

Scent of Green Papaya

Harry Potter

Twilight
