Fall Conferences

The program fall conferences this year included PAEA and TAPA. Representatives from our program attended both conferences and came back with great information to share with everybody. Mr. Patrick Cafferty and Mr. Jeff Wilbert attended the PAEA conference in Portland, Oregan while Mrs. Tanner, Mrs. Ferdinand-Jacob and Dr. Hames attended the TAPA conference in Gattlinburg, Tennessee.

Faculty Retreat

Student Health Center

The PA Program and McKenzie Medical Center are proud to be sponsoring the Bethel University Student Health Clinic. This is a joint venture that required a year-long planning period to come to fruition. Along the way, Ty Butler, Director of Sports Medicine and Carol Pinson, Human Resources Director has worked tirelessly with the PA Program Director to make this happen. We are committed to providing high quality health care to the students and employees of Bethel University.

The PA program will be contributing faculty members to serve as the primary providers in the health clinic. This will give the student body and employees a chance to see a PA in action and have a better understanding of what we can offer them in terms of medical care. David Lutz, PA-C will be the full time student health provider and continue to teach in the PA program. He has extensive experience in running a medical clinic as well as providing emergency care and spent many years in Haiti as a primary care provider. We welcome him and his family to the Bethel community.

The clinic will be located on campus and open 5 days per week year round. Services are limited to minor/urgent care complaints. More serious complaints or injuries will be referred to McKenzie Medical Center for treatment. This joint venture allows the ultimate in coverage for our students. No one will be left without appropriate treatment and follow up. The clinic will open January 26th. There will be an open house that day from 4-6pm and we welcome all alumni to attend.

The Class of 2012 has been chosen!

Selection was difficult this year with an applicant pool numbering around 200. The admissions committee conducted 50 interviews and from those interviews 31 students were chosen for admission. Fifteen states are represented by these students. Seventeen students have Biology degrees and 20 students in the incoming class are female with their male counterparts numbering 12.

     Upon compiling demographics on this class, the following averages were determined: Cumulative GPA – 3.3;

Healthcare Experience – 300+ hours; Shadowing Hours – approximately 200; Science Hours – 81; Average Age – 28.

The program is pleased with its number of applicants and is looking forward to receiving applications for next year’s class. The program will begin accepting applications in April, 2010. The admissions process will continue until September 1st through CASPA. Applicants will have until October 1st to get any remaining paperwork to the Program. The Program conducts rolling interviews and applicants are encouraged to apply early! Once the class is filled, no more interviews will be scheduled.

BUPAP had their first faculty retreat this year in Jackson, Tennessee. All faculty and staff were present for a day of review and reflection on the past year. During the retreat, suggestions were given by Tony Miller on how to make improvements in the program. The day long review was extremely informative and got us ready to start our long journey to the ARC-PA site visit next fall. Mr. Miller will visit the program next year to do a mock site visit and help insure the Program is ready for the ARC-PA site visitors.

During the month of November 2009 the student society collected around $250 to purchase arts and crafts supplies and gym equipment (jump ropes, basketballs, footballs, kick balls) for the Northwest Tennessee Boys and Girls Club. The kids and the staff were very grateful for our donation. After a brief presentation, the staff was kind enough to give us a tour of the facilities.

On September 12, 2009 the student society held a yard sale to raise money to help with expenses at Fall Fest (TN State PA Conference). A large amount of items were donated by both the students and the faculty. We had good expectations about the yard sale, but we were even surprised in how successful it was. Our efforts were rewarded with a total sum raised of about $1000. The student society voted to divide the money equally amongst the class.

Community Council Meeting

The community advisory council meeting held on November 12th was a great success. We had many participants from hospital CEO’s to alumni. After enjoying a meal catered by Mallard’s in Huntingdon, we took to the opportunity to discuss the ways we could increase opportunities for applicants to gain clinical knowledge and experience in medicine. Several of the alumni present stated they would love to have prospective applicants shadow them and the hospital representatives stated that there were systems in place for undergraduates to volunteer in the hospital and do some observation. If you know an interested student who hasn’t had the opportunity to shadow a PA- call us, we will be glad to help.

Information Sessions

You never know what you might hear at an information session!

Information sessions are scheduled three times a year for anyone interested in knowing more about our program. These sessions are designed to answer general questions about the PA profession and about our program. To sign up for one of the following sessions, email Sandy Atwill at atwills@bethelu.edu or call (731) 352-5708.

All information sessions begin at 11:00am and are held at the PA building.

Alumni Happenings - Kerri McCabe Smith

Kerri McCabe-Smith is a graduate from the Class of 2004. Kerri came to us from Ocean Springs, Mississippi by way of Clarksville, Tennessee. She received her BS degree in Athletic Training from the University of Southern Mississippi where she practiced as a student athletic trainer for two years before beginning PA school. Mrs. McCabe-Smith is now working at Henry County Orthopaedics in Paris, TN for Dr. Heather Gladwell. Kerri is married and a mother of two.

We were happy to have Kerri here as a speaker for three weeks during our review of the musculoskeletal system during Clinical Medicine. She did a fantastic job and we hope to have her back with us next year. Thanks Kerri!

New Full-Time Faculty Member – David Lutz, PA-C

David Lutz has been a PA-C since 1994 and is currently working here as an assistant professor of EKG/Radiology and is also working as a medical provider in the student health center at Bethel University. David is married, has four children, and lives on a small farm in McEwen, Tennessee where his parents also reside. David has worked as a clinical coordinator for the PA program at Trevecca in Nashville, Tennessee and also for our program back in 2005-2006. He has worked for over six years in emergency medicine at Horizon Medical Center in Dickson, Tennessee. Mr. Lutz also owned and operated his own family care clinic in McEwen, Tennessee from 2006 until 2009. David is a full-time member of the Tennessee Army National Guard and has been since 1999. He served his country in Iraq from March 2004 to October 2005. We are pleased to have David on staff with us and we hope to have him around for a long time to come.

PA students administered the H1N1 vaccines to Bethel faculty, staff and students while being supervised by the PA program medical director, Joseph Hames, MD, or by Dave Lutz, PA-C, on-campus student health provider at the student health clinic. Approximately 200 injections and nasal sprays were given out. With plenty of vaccine still on hand, the doors were opened to families of employees on December 21st.

Featured Faculty Member – Joseph Hames, MD

Dr. Hames has been the Medical Director of the PA Department since its inception in 2000. During this time he has taught Pharmacology to each of the first year classes. He has recently added to his teaching load and starting with the entering class in January, 2010, he will also be teaching Genetics, and A & P. He enjoys hearing from his former students. He attended the TAPA conference in Gatlinburg in October and was pleased to see so many Bethel graduates in attendance.

Dr. Hames is married to the Reverend Anne Hames who is the Chaplain of Bethel University. They have recently celebrated the birth of their first grandchild. Dr. Hames coordinates a yearly medical mission trip to Belize during Bethel’s spring break. The trip gives the seniors a chance to experience tropical medicine and the satisfaction of serving an impoverished population. Bethel PA graduates are always welcome to come along. If you are interested in the Belize trip, contact Dr. Hames at hamesj@bethelu.edu.

From the Director’s Desk

It has been a very busy year for the PA program and it has gone by very fast. During the Christmas season we are reminded to slow down and count our MANY blessings. So, to that end, I would like to say the following, every day I wake up and am so thankful that I get to come to Bethel University and lead this program. My staff are unbelievable, they consistently go above and beyond what is expected. The faculty’s dedication and willingness to make this a successful program is evident in everything they do. The student’s enthusiasm has not waivered (even after taking Critical Thinking!) The Community Advisory Council have been great at offering sound advice this year on a variety of topics. The University Administration have been supportive of the program every step of the way. I have the unique position to watch a program develop, faculty and staff become a family and students develop into providers over 2 years time. It is awesome and I am truly thankful. I hope that the Christian values that we live and teach to our students reflect in the healthcare providers they become.

We have a class going into clinicals and our second incoming class of 32 students. We ask that all our alumni remember the sacrifices made by the preceptors and supervising physicians who took time to answer their questions and lead and guide them and pay it forward. If you haven’t had a chance to precept a student yet- what are you waiting for. Call the program and volunteer todayJð

Merry Chrprecept a student yet- what are you waiting for. Call the program and volunteer todayϑ
