Although humans have been landscaping on top of roofs for many years now, within Canada and other countries, it’s a growing trend that could lead to many benefits initially not envisioned. Recent technology involving the placement of waterproof membranes on roofs now make it easier to design green-roof systems that capture water for irrigation, allow drainage, support your chosen plant-life, as well as resist the invasion of roots. Various researchers are studying the value of green roofs, and also their ability to reduce storm water runoff, increase energy efficiency, and aesthetically enhance the urban landscape. On green roofs the soil mixture and vegetation act as insulation, and temperatures fluctuate only mildly—hardly more than they would in a park or garden—reducing heating and cooling costs in the buildings below them by as much as 20% compared to buildings with heat absorbing asphalt roofs. Living roofs also present a haven to biodiversity with habitats threatened within the city.

Summarize the article (1 complete paragraph)

The only biases that I detected in this article was the support of environmentally helpful green roofs. The authors obviously think they are a cool idea and spend much more time on the “pro” than the “con.”

What biases, if any, did you detect in the article?

If Green Roofs are built everywhere, it will help with the environment, biodiversity, Oxygen and CO2 levels, regulate city temperatures, store precious storm water drainoff, and also act as a filtration system for polluted rain water. Not only that, I believe humans will appreciate being closer to nature, and giving something back to our wonderful planet. This innovation could be very helpful to sustainable resource management. Cities could even plant food crops on roofs!
