Many of the events in our story, as we’re learning, were actual historical events, and were featured in 1960’s newspapers. The Civil Rights Movement, for example, is a huge part of American and World history. Newspapers also include services and products that are needed for everyday life. For example, Mr. Watson may have seen an ad for the Ultra-Glide in a newspaper!!Directions: Over the next 6 weeks, you will be reading articles from the newspaper. You will choose these articles based on connection to “The Watsons Go to Birmingham”. In addition to reading an article each week, you will also complete a writing/reflection/connection activity. This assignment replaces the Reading Log. Your assignments are due on Friday. You will turn in your Newspaper Log along with your activity. Please make sure you keep up with your assignments, turn them in on time and DO NOT wait to the last minute, as this will affect your grade. Each assignment will be graded separately and counted as a homework grade for the week. At the end of the 6 weeks, your assignments will be averaged and counted as a test grade. I will also average in an effort (neatness and attention to detail) along with a participation grade (assignments turned in ON TIME)!Things to Remember-1. Your first task is to get newspapers. Please staple your response to the article.4. Work hard, however, TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Be proud of your effort and work!!!#1: Proud!! Kenny was an excellent reader. He was proud of his ability but didn’t want the other kids to know about it because he also wants to be accepted. Look through the newspaper for an article that celebrate someone’s outstanding ability or talent. First, summarize the article. Then answer the following: What is the outstanding ability highlighted in the story? How do you think the person feels about this attention? Why?#2: Image! In the story, while admiring his own image, Byron’s tongue gets stuck to the rearview mirror. Image, especially body image is important in our culture. Look through the newspaper for advertisements that use body image(s) to sell a product. What do think about the images youfound? Do you think the images are negative or positive? Why? *You can cut out the advertisements and glue them onto one sheet of paper.#3: Helpful! In chapter 4, Kenny shares his gloves with Rufus. Look through the newspaper for examples of people helping others in need. Summarize this article. Then answer the following How are the actions to similar to Kenny’s? How could you help people in your community?#4: Bullied! Kenny is bullied by Larry Dunn and then Byron bullies Larry. Look through the newspaper for another example of conflict. It can be between two individuals, groups or even countries. First, summarize the article. Among the examples you have found, do any involve a third party that tries to resolve the differences? If so, is the third party working peacefully or have they added to the conflict?#5: Let’s Eat! Kenny and Byron were sent to the market to sign for a few food items their Mom needed.Their Dad would pay for the items later. Select items from the newspaper (grocery store ad) that might be used for dinner. Add the costs together. Now add two boxes cookies to your total. Find the difference between the two totals. Relate your findings to Kenny and Byron’s situation at the store, and tell why you think Byron’s parents will be upset about the Swedish Cremes. You can include the entire grocery ad with the items circled, or you can cut out the items from the ad and glue them onto a sheet of paper.#6: That’s a Shame! Look for examples in the newspaper when someone’s action caused another person or group harm. First, summarize the article. Then, describe your reaction to the article. Describe your reaction to Byron’s hitting and killing the bird. Were your reactions similar or different? Explain.#7: Parts! The Watsons fix up their car to prepare for the long drive to Birmingham. Look throughthe newspaper or other sources for car parts. In today’s dollars, about how much money would the Watsons need to buy new tires, a new sound system, the supplies tothoroughly clean inside and out and an air freshener? Cut out the items and glue them onto a sheet of paper. Make sure you also create a budget for these purchases.#8: Visualize! At the end of the chapter, the Watson car is described as looking like a bug on its back. Look through the newspaper for a story that uses good imagery or visualization. Draw a picture of what the article describes.**You must choose an article that DOES NOT have a picture included. This article can describe a person or object. Your picture must include color.#9: Get Help! Kenny spent time behind the couch to find comfort and safety. That was his way to cope with the bombing and his feelings about it. Look through the newspaper for articles or advertisements of products that help people cope, perhaps not with tragic events, but with issues in our day-to-day lives. You must find at least 2 services or products you think would be helpful to Kenny and tell how and why they could be helpful. ................
