Pledges from Communities: MOM- $1,880.65, CHF $1,008, LOC- $1,000, COB- $1500, PAX- $240. That would be an operating income of $5,628 which is less $2,309 less then pledged last year and $2,069 less then expense this year. Vicar needs decision from communities on how to proceed with statements on Public Policy Statements put forward by the CCC. Draft statements come up for review and then need approval or abstention from each member church before putting forth. These usually have a fast turn around and the CCC tries to make statements that follow their public policy statement, but if we don’t get a process in place we’ll be unable to put our voices to these social justice issues. “So Called Masses” discussion. Discussion around Regional response and/ versus local parish response. Historical perspective hear here in Denver was discussed along with previous encounters with the Roman Church in other areas of the country. Some suggestions were given for approaches.Fr Scott of CHF sent word that two bishops were coming to his last mass as friends and he would not be hurt and even encouraged if they were “officially” used in some capacity to respond.Lara brought up the CHF would love to see the story surround the Bishops in town and the transition of an outgoing pastor to a ordained woman pastor- visually if possible. Kerrie brought up that lent was coming and often papers and local news do some sort of interest story of ash Ash Wednesday and that might be a good time to leverage this news and get out the story of the ECC. Encouraged local communities to do letters to the editor. Conclusions:Michael needs direction from communities on how they want him to respond as Vicar of the ECC and when to do it as an individual. (Lara suggests we take Public Policy Statements to Parish Leadership Teams and see if they can agree on those items and then anything outside of those topics must have specific approval) Action itemsPerson responsibleDeadlineTouch base with Bishops about response to “so called Masses” when they are here at the end of FebMichaelWeek of 2/6List of Media Outlets- local focus that could be contacted to do “personal interest storyLaraWeek of 2/6_______________________________________Agenda item:Pride FestPresenter:NoneDiscussion:Looks like Pride Fest costs would be $290 for a booth and $260 to March. Nicosia, representing the RMR on this council, asked for recommendations about signing issue statements on behalf of the region. Considerations include responding to time sensitive matters, getting buy-in of communities represented vs. acting upon delegated authority based on regional values. +Francis encourages regional discussion clarifying representative role. Vicar will continue to bring relevant issues up for community discernment when a lack of unanimity is perceived; in said cases abstention from the proposed action or statement is typical.Road Show+Francis wants to be in conversation with RMRC in its development, particularly in our imagining/reclaiming terms used by the tradition.; understands we’re only in initial planning stages. Response by vicar written on Facebook, disseminated across region and ECC:"There is more than one way to be Catholic, a reality lost to the Roman Archdiocese of Denver. They are correct that we of the Ecumenical Catholic Communion are not in communion with the Pope or the local Archbishop, by conscious choice. We stand for unity in faith, relationship and mission, and for inclusive participation, not division. Admittedly, our married clergy, our ordained women, and our laity's participation in church governance do set us apart... and we don't claim that the Sacraments, including the Eucharist, are ours to regulate; they flow from our relationship with Christ who welcomed all to the table, and empower us as the Body of Christ in the world. "Invalid?" "Illicit?" Maybe in the eyes of those who think that they have a monopoly on Catholic, Church, Salvation, Truth, et al. Not in the eyes of a God who affirms and embraces all."Bishop Peter also responded with Facebook statement re our validity/connection to Old Catholicism:The fact of the matter is that according to Roman Catholic theology and the Code of Canon Law the sacraments celebrated by the Old Catholics, from which churches like the Ecumenical Catholic Communion derive their apostolic succession, are indeed valid. Validity of a sacrament has to do with an action's authenticity in conveying the grace that Christ and His Church intended in that saving moment. In other words, when an ECC priest celebrates the Sacrament of the Eucharist is the presence of Christ effected for the gathered community? According to Roman Catholic canon law and theology Jesus Christ is as truly sacramentally present in the mass celebrated by an ECC priest as that of a Roman Catholic priest. This is what is meant by the validity of a sacrament: is the celebration of a sacrament authentic and actual. However, Roman Catholic Canon law declares that although such a celebration of the sacrament is valid it is at the same time illicit because the minister (priest) is not in "communion" with Rome. This simply means that the priest in question is not within the legal jurisdiction of the Roman Pontiff. What does that mean for the faithful who participate in such a Eucharistic celebration? It means that Jesus Christ is truly present in this celebration but that His presence is illegal. Jesus Christ is illegally present in the masses celebrated by ECC priests. Nonetheless, HE IS PRESENT actively bringing His saving grace to the gathered faithful! What more does one need to benefit from this saving work of Christ?MoM is drafting a response, Fr. Jim soliciting comments:Mary of Magdala in Fort Collins, Colorado is an Ecumenical Catholic Community, the Roman Catholic Alternative, welcoming persons of all faith traditions to the table of the Lord. We are grounded in Catholic identity and spirituality.Mary of Magdala Ecumenical Catholic Community is an open thinking, healing, affirming and welcoming Catholic Community. The Ecumenical?Catholic Community Communion is an Apostolic Church, and it enjoys the benefit of Apostolic Succession: the regular and uninterrupted transmission of ministerial authority by a succession of bishops from the apostles. The Ecumenical Catholic Communion believes that the Pope is an important spiritual leader but the Ecumenical Catholic Community does not believe in the infallibility of the Pope.Mary of Magdala and the ECC believe that Jesus is the Host of the table and that the Eucharist should be open to all Christians. The Ecumenical Catholic?Community Communion joins together to profess our faith in Christ in the living Catholic Tradition, handed to us from the apostles through many generations. The Ecumenical Catholic Community Ours is an authentic Catholic Faith. The priests of the Ecumenical Catholic Community are validly ordained priests.Mthr Kae advised prayerful pause, cautioned not to be reactionary or define our validity outside of our own experience of Church. She suggests same caution when reviewing legislative actions.Vicar’s clarification:? There is a Press Release link to the "Statement on so-called Catholic Masses" at the bottom of the Archdiocesan home page HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" as well as at HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" , so it can't be a more prominent, disparaging message than that.? After my sharing about it on Facebook and with others in person, some (in and outside of our Communion) have shared that they think it's an opportunity to disseminate information about our being a valid alternative to the Roman Catholic Church.? Any public response should frame our inherent legitimacy as Church apart from outside validation as Kae states. Is there some regional history of Archdiocesan backlash to our visibility of which I am unaware?? Maybe we should add this to the RMRC agenda for further clarification.Opportunity 1? It may present us with another opportunity as well.? I have inquired of +Francis about the possibility of engaging some of the other named Churches.? Some may not be kindred spirits, but some may.? Waiting to hear back from him.Opportunity 2? Many see this as opportunity for free publicity. 1/29/17 informed by Fr. Scott that vicar’s response to RC Archdiocesan statement on “so-called Catholic Masses” was read at CHF’s annual membership meeting with much appreciation. It was also posted on their Facebook page.
