James Campbell High School AthleticsHead Coach Job Description PRINCIPAL: Jon Henry LeeSUPERVISOR: Rory Pico (Athletic Director) HEAD COACH POSITION SUMMARY:The Head Varsity Coach will work under the supervision of the Athletic Director in accordance with the mission and vision of James Campbell High School and the Department of Education code of conduct regulations. ?It is expected that the person who holds the Head Coach position will provide the direction necessary for their staff to do the same. The Head Varsity Coach must realize and appreciate the need for their program to work with other sports programs as a complement to the entire Athletic Department. This position is responsible for coaching and providing direction to student-athletes so they can develop the skills necessary for both academic and athletic success. HEAD COACH DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Administrative ResponsibilitiesAlong with Athletic Director, responsible for all matters relating to the organization, administration and philosophy of the sport under his/her direction.Serves in a leadership capacity to the community program.Oversees the high school program in his/her sport.Adheres to the OIA Coaches Handbook. ?Acts as a positive role model on and off the court/field/site, etc.Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.Maintains competency in NFHS, OIA, HHSAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques and general information about all aspects of the sport.Works cooperatively with all OIA/HHSAA coaches, athletic directors and students to ensure a healthy, positive cross town rivalry.Responsible for scheduling preseason games.Works closely with the Athletic Director to schedule facilities use.Secures the Athletic Director’s approval before scheduling non-school facilities for off-campus activities.Works with the coaches and/or Athletic Director to plan transportation and appropriate supervision at away contests in compliance with district travel policy and guidelines. Supervisory DutiesResponsible for selecting all coaches on your staff.Evaluates all assistant, junior varsity and volunteer coaches in his/her sport.Assigns duties to coaching staff.Record Keeping ResponsibilitiesMaintains an accurate and current team & program roster and submits copies to the Athletic Department.Works closely with the Athletic Director in the financing of his/her sport by preparing and submitting an annual budget; follows DOE school policies regarding setting funding criteria and handling financial transactions and sets parameters and supervises fundraising efforts for all teams under his/her direction.Develops a consistent and positive communications procedure through the school and media to inform the parents and the general public about his/her sport.Maintains accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.Arranges for the presentation of team awards.Records, submits and maintains necessary DOE and OIA forms and paperwork.Submits all forms needing approval of superintendent or designee, special programs principal and/or Athletic Director. ? Athletic Behavior/Eligibility ResponsibilitiesEnforces all rules of the DOE, OIA and HHSAA related to his/her sport.Enforces discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establishes and oversees penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.Ensures that no bullying/hazing occurs in his/her sport.Establishes performance criteria for participation in interscholastic competition in his/her sport.Checks with Athletic Department on individual athlete’s eligibility.Injury/SafetyCooperates with the Athletic trainers to verify that no participant is issued equipment or allowed to practice until his/her physical examination consent and concussion form have been completed and submitted.Oversees the safety condition of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.Enforces rules and regulations concerning conditioning of players and their health and safety.Reports injuries to the Athletic Trainer through personal communication, as well as completing and submitting incident reports to the Athletic Trainer and Athletic Office.Exercises great care in dealing with all injuries and particularly those that are of a serious nature. In all cases, the coach should follow the DOE, OIA procedures relating to injuries.Provides supervision of all athletes until they have left the facilities and/or site.Ensures that all facility windows, doors, and gates are locked in any area that has been used. Team ActivitiesPlans all practice sessions and competitions, and supervises off-season conditioning program.Ensures a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors.Plans and executes special events such as assemblies, Senior/Parent Night, team meals, awards banquet, other special recognition, etc. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalent RequiredNFHS CERTIFICATIONS REQUIREDFundamentals of CoachingConcussion in SportsHeat Illness PreventionFirst Aid and CPR certification required.Valid teaching certificate preferred.Bachelor’s degree preferredHead Coach Experience at High School Athletic preferred.Post High School playing/coaching experience preferred.Effective verbal and written communication skills required. ................
