January 14, 2005

Moorhead Sports Center

Moorhead, MN

GAME TIME: 7:00

SERIES: Gustavus leads 69-24-5

SERIES STARTED: 1958

LAST YEAR: Last year Concordia tied Gustavus in the first game of the series 1-1 and then lost the second game 4-2. In the first game of the series, which was played in St. Peter, the two teams scored the only goals in the contest in the first period. After that, it was a goalie war as the two netminders turned aside 46 shots in the final two periods and overtime. Cobber goalie Ryan Gill made 42 saves in the game, while Gustie goalie Dan Melde stopped 24 shots. In the series finale, Concordia allowed three consecutive goals in the first and second periods and lost 4-2. Tom Awaijane scored three goals for the Gusties.

SERIES HISTORY: The Cobbers are winless in their last six games against Gustavus. The Gusties hold a 4-0-2 advantage over Concordia since the second game of the 2001-02 season. Before that stretch, Concordia had taken five of the previous seven games from Gustavus…the Gusties hold an 11-7-2 advantage in the past 20 games in the series…the most consecutive victories by one team in the series is 12. Gustavus rattled off 12 wins from 1965 until 1972 and then duplicated the feat from 1981 until 1986.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

CONCORDIA (1-3-0 MIAC/1-10-1)

So You Are Saying We Still Have a Chance

The Cobber men's hockey team is currently tied for fifth place in the MIAC. They are in the thick of the MIAC playoff hunt despite only winning one game this season. The reason for that phenomenon is due to the fact that seven of the team's losses have come at the hands of teams that play in the NCHA (Wisconsin schools). Concordia has only lost three games in league play and two of those came to nationally-ranked, and defending MIAC champion, St. John's. The Cobbers will play two critical home series in the next three weeks. This weekend they play Gustavus, who is winless in their two MIAC games this season, and Hamline, who is bringing up the rear in the MIAC.

Conference Scoring Sensations

Two Cobber players are in the top 10 in the league in goals scored in conference play. Nate Ronning and Brett Johnson have both scored three goals in the team's first four league games and are curently ranked eighth in the league.

Goaltender Roulette

Cobber coach Steve Baumgartner is still waiting for one of the three goalies to step forward and establish himself as the #1 netminder. Heading into this weekend’s series Josh Hand, Mike Dowers and Lee Baldwin have almost identical statistical numbers. All three have goals against averages in the 5.0 range and all have save percentages in the middle 80’s. The only thing that Baldwin has over the other two is that he owns the team’s only win. He was the goaltender of record when Concordia beat Augsburg 6-5.

THE INSIDE SCOOP

GUSTAVUS (0-2-0 MIAC/3-8-0)

Gustie Primer

The Gusties last game was a 4-2 loss to Marian on December 11. Gustavus enters the weekend with a 3-8-0 record. Coach Brett Petersen's squad has played only one MIAC series so far this season. That series was played against league-leading St. John's on December 4-5. Gustavus is led in scoring by sophomore forward Steven Jensen with 10 points (4g, 6a).

The Gusties are led on defense by juniors Adam Meyer and Keith Detlefsen. Both players have three goals and six assists for nine points. Meyer leads the team with three power play goals.

Defensive Scoring Serenade

Two of the top three leading scorers for Gustavus this season are defensemen. Keith Detlefson and Adam Meyer both have nine points on the year and both are among the team’s most experienced blueliners. Detlefson and Meyer are currently tied for third in defenseman scoring in the MIAC.

But Coach, We’re Really Not Tired Gustavus ranks seventh in the MIAC in goals allowed this season. The really bad news for the Gusties is that as the game goes on, the more goals they give up. Gustavus has allowed only 13 goals in the first period (5th best in the MIAC). After that the defense starts to get shaky as they have allowed 16 goals in the second period and 18 in the final 20 minutes of play. Offensively, the Gusties do their most damage in the second period. They have scored 14 goals in the middle frame.

Steve Baumgartner

Steve Baumgartner

became head coach of the

Concordia hockey team in

1986. During his initial

season the Cobbers

captured the conference

championship and

advanced to the NCAA Division III National tournament by winning the MIAC playoffs.

He was named the MIAC Coach of the Year for the third time in 1999-00 after leading the Cobbers to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Steve was a four-time All-MIAC performer for the Cobbers from 1978 to 1982. Baumgartner was named MVP in the MIAC and also played in the NCAA East-West All-Star Game in 1982 for Division I players. Following the 1982 season, Baumgartner was signed as a free agent to the New York Rangers. Baumgartner later served as the sports program technician for the City of Regina, where he worked mainly with local youth and amateur teams, before joining the Concordia College staff.

Since coming to Moorhead, Steve has also been a coaching staff member of the Blue Line Hockey School, a program that has developed many Division I and Division III players. He is active in both community and church programs. Steve also serves as the assistant coach of the Concordia Woman's Fastpitch team.

Steve grew up in Regina. He and his wife, Lori ('82), live in Moorhead with their two daughters, Jenna and Whitney.

Concordia Men’s Hockey – Last Game Recap

Concordia 1 at UW-Superior 9

Cobbers Gets Frozen By #3 UW-Superior 9-1.

SUPERIOR, Wis.-- Concordia allowed two short-handed goals and four power play goals and dropped a 9-1 decision to nationally-ranked UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets entered the game ranked third in the latest USCHO national poll and didn't disappoint as they scored four goals in each of the first two periods and cruised to the eight-goal victory.

The loss is the third in a row for Concordia. The Cobbers see their overall record fall to 1-10-1, while Superior remains undefeated - upping their overall mark 10-0-3. The Yellowjackets have now won five consecutive games.

The Cobbers' defensive plague of giving goals up in bunches resurfaced in the first game of the new calendar year. Concordia conceded three goals in a span of 4:33 in the first period. The Yellowjackets opened the scoring by netting a shorthanded goal at 4:45. They proceeded to add an even-strength goal at 7:44 and then hammered home a power play goal at 9:18. Superior added one more goal before the end of the first period of play.

In the second period, Superior scored four more times. Like the first frame, they received a shorthanded goal, a power play goal and completed the trifecta with an even-strength tally.

Concordia's lone goal of the game came towards the end of the second period when Dan Perry (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal at 16:32. It was Perry's fourth goal of the season which places him second on the team in goals scored in 2004-05.

Superior finished the scoring with a single goal in the third period.

For the game, the Yellowjackets outshot Concordia 45-21. The usually reliable Concordia power play was completely shut down. They went scoreless in nine attempts and gave up two shorthanded goals. Superior was 4-for-7 in their man-advantage attempts.

Concordia used the goaltending tandem of Lee Baldwin (So., Horace, N.D.) and Mike Dowers (Fr., Thief River Falls, Minn.). Baldwin started the game and gave up six goals in just over 25 minutes of action. He collected 13 saves and was saddled with his fourth loss of the season. Dowers relieved Baldwin in the second period and gave up three goals in the remaining 34:46. He stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced. Superior goalie Mathieu Bonnelly turned aside 20 shots to pick up his sixth win of the season.
