Camelid Community 2009: It’s No Time for Business as Usual

Join Us July 31-August 2 in Kansas City, Missouri

Camelid Community 2008’s “Outline for Change” included creation of educational materials intended for use by camelid organizations nationwide. “The Basics of Alpaca & Llama Care” brochure and a camelid press packet containing a poster, llama and alpaca fact sheet, sample press release and tips on how to use the various publicity pieces were sent last fall to camelid organizations across the country for use in their outreach efforts. Camelid Community 2009 plans to build on last year’s momentum by continuing to move forward in these unsettling times where we certainly can’t count on “business as usual”.

With the social and economic landscape we find ourselves in today, we in the camelid world need to take an honest look at where we are and where we need to be going if we want to do well by ourselves and our animals. Representatives from llama and alpaca groups as well as interested individuals are invited to bring their concerns and perspectives to Camelid Community 2009 so together we can discuss industry issues, suggest solutions and work toward common goals. This annual gathering is critical for establishing contacts and encouraging improved communication throughout our llama and alpaca world—which is even more important in today’s economic climate.

The main purpose of Camelid Community is to discuss “the state of the union” within the camelid world, and again we would like to have representatives from all geographical regions, national groups, and local and regional breeder/owner groups. Facilitators this year will be Barb Baker (bebaker@) and Sheila Fugina (bsfugina@). Please contact either of them to propose discussion topics. Though you are encouraged to provide suggestions even if you cannot attend, we hope to see you there. Past “take-away” projects have provided significant contributions and awareness within the llama and alpaca community. (A complete report on Camelid Community 2008 is available at , the web site for the International Camelid Institute.)
