Additional Training Announced for School Safety Specialist Certification

The New Jersey Department of Education is announcing additional training sessions of the School Safety Specialist (SSS) certification program scheduled for August 6-9, 2018. Districts unable to send their SSS designees to the June training session due to scheduling difficulties may send them to the August training session. The August training will be conducted at two different locations, to be determined. Once the August training sites are finalized, registration information will be distributed.

In addition to the SSS designees (those holding an administrative certificate), other school safety and security personnel employed by the school district, such as school security directors, managers and planners, are permitted to attend the August training with the approval of the district superintendent. However, please note that only the SSS designees holding an administrative certificate, as mandated by the School Safety Specialist legislation, N.J.S.A. C.18A:17-43.2 to 18A:17-43.3, will receive the SSS certification.

Those still interested in attending the June training at one of four regional training sites should refer to the March 6, 2018 memo from the Department of Education for registration information. The June training is limited to school administrators only.

As a reminder, responsibilities of the School Safety Specialist include supervising and providing oversight for all school safety and security personnel; ensuring safety and security policies and procedures comply with state laws and regulations; and providing the necessary training and resources to school district staff in matters relating to school safety and security. The SSS will also serve as the district's liaison with local law enforcement, as well as national, state and community agencies and organizations, in matters of school safety and security. As similarly permitted by N.J.A.C. 6A:16-6.2(b)1, districts may designate more than one person to serve as a School Safety Specialist, provided the designee possesses the required administrator certificate per N.J.A.C. 6A:9-2.1.

Prior to attending the SSS certification training program, SSS designees must take the FEMA online course IS100.SCA Introduction to the Incident Command System for Schools. This prerequisite for the SSS training program is approximately three hours long.

a. If you don't already have a FEMA Student Identification (SID) number, you will have to register for one. Registration instructions are included on the IS-100.SCA link above.

b. Upon completion of IS-100.SCA, email a copy of your FEMA Certificate of Achievement to sssa@doe. along with your Teacher Certification Information System (TCIS) tracking number (assigned by the TCIS system when you applied for your administrative certification).

Enhancements to the TCIS system, estimated to be completed in June, are being developed to include the SSS certification and the FEMA certificate verification.

Information will be forwarded to the SSS designees when they can apply for the School Safety Specialist certification. The SSS certification application does not have an application fee associated with it.

By now, all districts should have entered their district SSS designee(s) in the NJDOE's CDS database for the 20182019 school year.

Note: The School Safety Specialist training is a state-certificated course. All phases must be completed for a certificate to be issued. Therefore, arrangements will need to be made for any sessions or classes missed.

Contact Information Questions regarding the SSS training program or requirements can be directed to the Office of School Preparedness and Emergency Planning at school.security@doe. or (609) 588-2323.
