7th grade News:

Please help your child to keep textbooks covered.

NJHS Food Drive:

Our annual food drive will begin Monday, November 7 and continue through Thursday, November 17. All donations will benefit the Fort Bend Human Needs Ministries Food Pantry. All food items will be collected this year through the ELA department.

Students bringing even one item will be entered in a drawing for prizes, but please encourage your students to bring as much as they can.  Two years ago, through the generosity of BMS students and staff, we filled up the entire truck.  We are hoping to be able to do this again to help those in need this holiday season.

Food items such as peanut butter, cereal, canned meats and vegetables, sugar, flour, corn meal, evaporated milk, or other popular holiday food items are greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Pre-AP/GT-

The rational number test scores were not what I had hoped. This is one of the most difficult topics we study this year. They not only had to do calculations, but had to really think since it is a combination of objectives. It was also predominantly a word problem test so they needed to check for reasonableness and make certain they were answering the question being asked.

The students made some calculation errors, but many common sense mistakes; such as placing the larger number below the smaller one when subtracting and using a repeating decimal form instead of the fraction form.

The tests will be returned today. The grades are already in Skyward. This is my plan for everyone’s success.

• We went over the most common mistakes yesterday in class. I will re-teach as necessary. Most students were shaking their heads at themselves.

• All students must do corrections using the four column method as discussed in class and available on my website. These corrections are due in class Tuesday. The last column where they analyze what they did wrong is very important for future success.

• I will offer tutorials Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Please send them with a pass.

• I have posted a review they did in class last week to my webpage under resource main page/resources.

• We will retest Wednesday during class.

• I will take the higher of the two scores as long as corrections were done and turned in.

Detailed progress reports will be handed out Monday for math. They may be returned signed by Thursday for a free 100 daily grade. The grade on the detailed progress includes this first version of the rational numbers test so the average might not match the mailed progress. I did this in the interest of keeping you informed with the most up to date information. Again, I will record the higher of the two tests once the retest is given.

We have started our proportions unit. They are allowed to use calculators for this unit as long as they use a ratio table and show how they travel from one number to the next. Test should be the Monday of Thanksgiving break.

Students will take the Math District Assessment on November 15, please remind your child to look over their notes and old tests/quizzes and practice problems from the textbook over the weekend.

Tutorials for math are offered by me on Wednesdays at 8:05AM in my classroom. Your child should have a sticker in the front of their agenda to get upstairs. They do not need to let me know in advance that they are attending.

Please access class information at my website: mrsmeyermath.

From Texas History

Regular-

Next week in Texas History, we’re wrapping up our studies of the Road to Revolution from Reform on Monday, and on Tuesday we’re beginning our lessons over the Texas Revolution. We’re going to go through the events one at a time and fill in a “who what when where why” chart. After getting the information on each event, the student will prove that they learned the significance of each event by creating a poem, tweet, or cartoon about each one. This week we will start with the Battle of Gonzales and get to the Siege and Battle of the Alamo.

Pre-AP/GT-

We will spend 3 days in the lab next week getting familiar with Google Earth as well as using a cartoon creator for our first two events from the Texas Revolution.

All ELA classes:  As a reminder, Baines is hosting a school-wide spelling bee on Tuesday, November 8, after school in the library.

All students have access to the Holt McDougal literature reader via the Internet.  Students can make up reading assignments from home using a computer with Internet access, and the Holt McDougal website also offers Powerpoint tutorials for reading strategies, grammar lessons, writing pointers, and all other areas of ELA education.  All reading selections also offer worksheets in Word format which students can download and work with at home for extra practice.  Instructions for student access to the literature reader are posted in the “Resources” section of Mrs. Humphries’s webpage linked to the Baines website.

Mrs. Humphries’s classes:  We will begin reading the novel Taking Sides, by Gary Soto.  The students will write journal entries to connect their own experiences in life with the text, some of which will be collected for a daily grade.  We will focus on literary devices such as theme, plot, setting, conflict, and characterization in the context of the novel.  Students will continue their study of vocabulary and grammar in short warm-ups and will use their new “Skills Books” to reinforce grammar concepts.

Ms. Brown’s and Ms. Howard’s classes:  Students are continuing their study of theme in the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. We will now extend our literary discussions and activities to character traits and motivations throughout the novel. In addition to other in class assignments related to the novel, students will continue to use their dialectical journals. Dialectical journals have been successful as they assist students with inferencing skills that help support predictions they will be asked to make throughout their reading of the novel.

Reader’s response writing pieces will also be assigned next week—Do you think the Logan kids’ revenge plan will do more harm to the Logan family than good? Students will be given a rubric to address all standards for the in class assignment. Next week’s grammar objective will be further discussion of FANBOYS usage in order to encourage varied sentence structure in all writing assignments.

Ms. Howard’s class has a cumulating project for the novel Roll of Thunder; Hear my Cry.  Students were given the handouts for the assignments on November 1st.  The final product is due in class on November 11th.

As always, check individual teacher websites for quiz dates, test dates, and project due dates.

Our tutoring schedule is as follows:

Mrs. Humphries:  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:05 – 8:40 A.M.

Ms. Brown: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:05 – 8:40 A.M.

Ms. Howard: Wednesday, 8:05-8:40 A.M. and any other day by appointment

Ms. Brown’s webpage: BrownELA.

Pre-AP/GT-

Students must have Chs 4-6 in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry read by Wednesday, November 9.  I also gave them their “Mind Map” project to get started on. It’s a rather lengthy project, so it isn’t one that can be put off until the last minute.  I will post the requirements on my Baines webpage.

From IDS

Students will be completing their Greek mythology projects in preparation for skits highlighting character traits discussed in class. Also Word Generation cartoons and paragraphs are to be completed by Friday, November 11.

Students wishing to submit their completed “Do the Write Thing” essays to the Greater Houston/Harris County “Do the Write Thing” essay contest are invited to get a competition application from their IDS teacher.  The students will also continue their study of vocabulary and reading strategies, focusing this week on the content areas of science and math.

Mrs. Humphries’s class:  “Do the Write Thing” final drafts are due Friday, November 4.  (See teacher’s webpage for assignment.)

Mrs. Armstrong-

Next week will begin learning about the affects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on the human body. Students should be studying their vocabulary terms daily.
