Employees within this class are distinguished from the Plant Operator I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Plant Operator II level are normally filled by advancement from the Plant Operator I level. This class is distinguished from the Plant Operator III in that the latter assumes lead supervisory responsibility over lower level staff. Advancement to the Plant Operator III level is based on successfully obtaining the Water Operator Systems III from the New Mexico Certification Program, meeting minimum qualifications and satisfactory job performance.The ideal candidate will possess the following in addition to those listed below:New Mexico Level II certification in Wastewater.Two years’ experience operating water/wastewater treatment plants.?Possess a valid Class A or Class B CDL.??Knowledge of the principles and practices of water treatment plant operations; operating principles of valves, pumps, and motors; principles and methods of arsenic removal and analyses; effects and problems of industrial waste in water treatment processes; safe work practices.Knowledge of computer operations and ability to enter data into computer spreadsheets and/or data management systems.Must have general knowledge of heavy equipment operation such as but not limited to: Backhoe, loader, and farm tractors.Ability to operate all hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical equipment used in wastewater treatment plant operations.Working Conditions:Subject to adverse weather conditions, fumes, toxic agents and hazards associated in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants.Other Requirements:?This class description lists examples of duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbents may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job related knowledge and skills.RESPONSIBILITIESEstablishes and maintains effective sample procedures of plant operations and effluent.Diagnoses operating problems; directs and performs necessary corrective action during work shift.Makes process control adjustments, reads gauges and meters, records data, prepares necessary shift log reports.Prepares required reports and maintains complete record keeping proceduresPerforms operations and maintenance activities including collecting samples and performing routine laboratory tests and analyses.Directs, assigns and trains employees.Maintains discipline and ensures proper procedures are followed.Determines proper chemical flow rates.Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.Performs Level I tasks as necessary.Ability and willingness to work on-call shifts, as requested, must be willing to work off-hours, night, weekend and holiday shifts.
