DOCTRINE OF MINISTRY / PASTORS

DOCTRINE OF MINISTRY / PASTORS

1. The word “Ministry” itself is a translation of DIAKONOS and is used 3 ways in the Bible.

a. A political use for the ruler of a state in Romans 13:4.

b. A general use for all believers who are in full-time Christian service. (all believers) II Cor. 3:6; 4:1; 5:18; and 6:3.

b. It is also used in same passages in a specialized sense for the pastor of a local church. I Cor. 3:5; Eph. 3:17; Col. 1:23; and 4:7;

I Thes. 3:2; I Tim. 1:12.

2. Three other Greek words used to identify the Pastor-teacher.

a. “PRESBUTEROS”- emphasizes the person and rank of the pastor.

He is the highest authority in the local church.

b. “EPISKOPOS” Sometimes translated Bishop. It means overseer, manager. This emphasizes the work and function of a pastor.

c. “POIMENOS” “DIDASKALOS”-teacher. Translated pastor or pastor-teacher. Meaning (poy-maim-oz). A shepherd. The shepherd keeps the sheep from straying by whacking them with his rod. He also feeds them.

3. These words are interchangeable for pastors.

Acts 20:17, 28.

Vs. 17 – Pastors are called elders which is Presbuterous.

Vs. 28 – Pastors are called bishops (overseers) which is EPISKOPOS.

Vs. 28 – They are said to have the responsibility to shepherd

POIMENO the sheep.

ELDERS, BISHOPS, and PASTORS are all the same person.

4. 4. All three words carry the connotation of authority. The pastor-teacher is the

authority in a local church. 1 Thessalonians 5:12, Hebrews 13:7, 17 -

Remember those who have rule over you, (then it’s qualified.) Who spoke the

work to God to you.

1. The pastor-teacher is the total product of Grace. (Means he is responsible to God.) 1Timothy 1:12-16 Paul was the chief of sinners and yet became the chief apostle. 1 Corinthians 15:10

Read Isaiah 54:17

The congregation is not responsible for handling or disciplining the pastor-teacher. That is God’s job! When you try, all you do is get in the way which means blessing for the pastor-teacher.

2. General passages that are pertinent to the pastor.

1 Timothy 1:12-14; 2 Timothy 2:24-26 (PT responsibilities); 1 Timothy 3:1-9;

2 Timothy 2; Titus 1:6-9.

“IN EVERY CITY” – Titus had to go to every city, start teaching, discover the ones that had the gift, train them for the job, and get the local assemblies cranked up and going.

The plan for organizing Crete was developed by Paul and was to be executed by Titus. Paul is like Robert E. Lee - Strategy

Titus is like T. J. Jackson – Tactics

TITUS 1:6 - IF (first class condition) ANY MAN IS “EIMI” (present active indicative – keeps on being) ABOVE REPROACH, A ONE WOMAN MAN, HAVING CHILDREN WHO ARE BELIEVERS, NOT ACCUSED OF RIOTOUS LIVING OR REBELLION.

“ABOVE REPROACH” (KJV.) (BLAMELESS) – A NEGKLETOS

have a long criminal record (negative) to charge or accuse

“THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE”

MIAS GUNE ANER

ONE WOMAN MAN

Woman – (There is no word for wife in the Koine Greek, just woman)

Man – (Adult male) (ANER is the Greek word used for a nobleman.) “anthropos” generally means a human being, male or female.

What is a ONE WOMAN MAN?

1. He is a man that is not polygamous.

2. He is a man that has no mistresses or concubines.

3. This passage does not eliminate a pastor-teacher because he is divorced!

4. Remember, Paul who was the worst sinner was also the highest apostle.

“HAVING CHILDREN WHO ARE BELIEVERS” – The children don’t have to be

perfect, but they must be believers.

“NOT ACCUSED OF (KJV-RIOT) DISSIPATION” – “ASATIA” – (Greek)

1. To waste or squander time (dissipation).

2. A dissolute (immorality), irregular course of life.

“REBELLION” – (KJV) UNRULY - “HUPOTOKTAS” – means the

1. Pastor-teacher must not be involved in a revolution to overthrow his country.

2. He should not be involved in anything that defies authority.

3. He should never be opposed to law and order.

Other examples:

a. He must not encourage draft dodging or conscientious objectors.

b. He must not be opposed to law enforcement.

c. He must not side with law breakers.

d. He must not be against corporal or capital punishment.

TITUS 1:7 - FOR THE OVERSEER (KJV) (BISHOP) MUST BE (KJV) (BLAMELESS) – ABOVE REPROACH AS GOD’S STEWARD, (1) NOT SELF-WILLED, (2) NOT QUICK TEMPERED, (3) NOT ADDICTED TO WINE, (4) NOT PUGNACIOUS, (5) NOT FOND OF SORDID GAIN.

OVERSEER - EPISKOPOS” i.e. The one in authority. A synonym for the P-T.

“STEWARD” – “OIKONOMOS” – an administrator with authority.

“OIKOS” – house “NOMOS” – law

Law whereby a household is administered or governed. The word refers to the manager of a household.

1. Linking EPIKOSPOS and OIKONOMOS, which are used interchangeably here,

definitely subordinates the Board of Deacons or any other administrative board to the

pastor of a church.

2. While the deacons function in administration and have administrative authority, it

is neither independent of, nor higher than, that of a P-T.

3. The concept of divided authority in different fields is destroyed by this phase.

4. The idea that the P-T is the authority in spiritual matters and the deacons are the

authority in temporal matters, is a house divided. Spiritual Field/Temporal Field.

5. The P-T is the final authority in both spiritual and temporal matters. Hebrews13:7, 17.23

6. This means that deacons are to Help the P-T, and not use their office to fight

against, or try to destroy the pastor’s authority. The deacons, indeed the entire

congregation, must stay objective.

7. This does not imply a rubber stamp, but a team concept of a Local Church (with

one final authority). When it comes to administration, it is a team concept.

Remember in Acts 6:1-7 the deacons waited on tables, they performed administrative

functions to release the P-T’s time for more important functions; things that only the

pastor could do.

8. So in order to fulfill 1 Corinthians 14:40 there must be one final authority in a local

church, and that authority is vested in the P-T by the Word of God. 1 Cor. 14:40.

LET ALL THINGS BE DONE PROPERLY AND IN AN ORDERLY MANNER.

1. For some reason this concept bothers some people. It shouldn’t though:

a. It comes from the Word of God. 1 Thes. 5:12; Heb. 13:7, 17.

b. No one gets upset when the President of a company stands up and

says that he is the final authority and that’s it.

c. Or when a Colonel stands before his combat team and says, “You’re

going to do it my way.”

d. These things don’t bother people too much, but there is something about being in an independent church that just makes everyone want to be independent. (The idea of no authority and anarchy.)

Leadership authority demands certain norms and standards, so now we have five negatives of spiritual leadership and then the 6 positives of spiritual leadership.

NEGATIVES

1. “NOT SELF-WILLED” – “AUTHADES” (au-thau-dace) – Not to allow

stubbornness and antagonism towards people to cause one to be unfair. Grace

Orientation keeps a P-T from becoming unfair or prejudiced. A P-T must stay

objective. If a P-T becomes a self-willed tyrant, God will make him pay for it!

2. “NOT QUICK TEMPERED” – “ORGILOS” (or-gee-los) – Not prone jump to

conclusions that lead to anger. A P-T must have a RMA. NOT IRASCIBLE,

LOSING ONE’S TEMPER.

a. This does not mean that P-Ts never get angry. But their recovery

Should be as fast as their laps into anger. P-Ts must use rebound too.

b. I shouldn’t have to point out that P-Ts are not perfect.

1. “NOT ADDICTED TO WINE” – “PAROINON (par-oy-non) – One who

sits too long at his wine. “PARA – beside OINON – wine The verb

“PAROINEIN’ means to behave ill at wine or to treat with drunken violence.

This does not demand that a P-T be a teetotaler, but it does demand temperance. Drinking is not forbidden; drunkenness is. But you must use common sense and thoughtfulness when you drink. This principle is found in I COR. 10:23-33.

(Law of Liberty) (Law of Love) This also means that a P-T should not rely on alcohol to handle pressure.

2. NOT PUGNACIOUS (belligerent, chip on shoulder) – “PLEKTES” – A brawler (Leadership without violence)

Sometimes P-Ts are tempted to use physical force to straighten someone

out, but it will do no good. Only the Word of God can straighten people out, and they have to be willing to accept it. If they are negative, you can beat their brains out, and it would do no good.

3. NOT FOND OF SORDID GAIN – “AISCHROKERDES” (ice-crow-kear dase) – (KJV) Not given to filthy lucre (monetary gain, profit) a P-T with his hand in the till. Example: Jimmy Baker.

This does not mean that a P-T should not be supported by his

congregation. 1 Timothy 5:17-18, 2 Thes. 3:9, I Cor. 9:6-11, Phil. 4:15-17.

POSITIVES

TITUS 1:8 - BUT (1) HOSPITABLE, (KVJ) sober (2) LOVING WHAT IS GOOD (divine good) (3) SENSIBLE (sound mind) (4) JUST (5) DEVOUT (KJV) Holy (6) SELF-CONTROLLED (KJV) temperate.

a. LOVER OF HOSPITALITY – “PHILO ZENOS” PHILEO – love ZENOS – A stranger or someone in whom you are estranged. To do something for someone who does not earn it or deserve it. This is a grace attitude.

POOR TRANSLATION (KJV) Lover of Good Men

b. LOVING WHAT IS GOOD – “PHILAGATHOS” PHILA – “PHILEO”-Love

“AGATHOS” – Good (Divine Good)

This means to love. (Properly motivated Good.) Divine Good. To

Love positive volition.

c. SENSIBLE (not rash or impulsive) SOPHRON

“SOPH” sound “PHRONEMA” mind

This means stability of mind. An RMA (Relaxed Mental Attitude). MASs causes instability of mind.

d. JUST – DIKAIOS (dee-ki-os) = Fair or equitable. Free from prejudice!

e. DEVOUT – “HOSIOS” (hos-ee-os) = (a) Separation unto (b) occupation with

(c) pleasing to someone. This is capacity to love.

a) To love God = Occupation with Christ

b) To love spouse= Occupation with Spouse

f. SELF – CONTROLLED “EGKRATES (egg-kray-tace) EG –I or self “EGO”

“KRATOS” –strength or control Not allowing oneself to be controlled by: alcohol illicit sex people drugs money temper

TITUS 1:9 – HOLDING FAST THE FAITHFUL WORD (faithful – syn. Dependable “PISTOS”)(word “LOGOS”) WHICH IS IN ACCORDANCE (“KATA” preposition meaning according to the norm or standard) WITH THE STANDARD OF DOCTRINE THAT HE MAY BE ABLE (“DUNATOS”) BY SOUND DOCTRINE BOTH TO EXHORT AND TO REBUKE (refute) THOSE WHO OPPOSE IT.

HOLDING FAST – ANTECHOMAI (ant-ech-o-my) – To cling to someone or something. Present tense = continuous action. The P-T should cling to B.D. in the same way a person that falls overboard clings to a life preserver.

FAITHFUL WORD – The Word of God is Faithful! It is true! It is always true and you can always depend on it!

TEACHING – “DIDACHE” (di-da-kay) – Public teaching, categorical teaching, systematic teaching. This word is used to mean teaching accurately according to the norm and standard from Bible Doctrine.

SOUND – “HUGIAINO” (hoog-ee-an-o) – Pure, uncorrupted. This is where we get the word hygiene

DOCTRINE – “DIDASKALIA” = Doctrine

EXHORT – “PARA KALEA” - “PAR” =to the side. “KALEO” = to call. To encourage, to push, to convince, to reprove. This word means to make an appeal.

This passage emphasizes the necessity for leadership in Christianity.

REBUKE – “ELEGCHO” (ee-leg-cho) – To rebuke, refute, straighten out, chew-out.

THOSE WHO OPPOSE IT – “ANTILEGO” ANTI – against. LEGO – to speak.

(KJV) Gainsayers.

Now remember these Cretin believers were unruly, and were in the middle of a spiritual revolution.

TITUS 2:7-IN ALL THINGS ASSERT YOUR (directed to Titus) LEADERSHIP UNDER THE MODEL OF HONORABLE WORKS (or production) BY MEANS OF (1) TEACHING B.D. WITH INTEGRITY OF CONTENT, (2) BEING DIGNIFIED,

The (KJV) also adds sincerity which is not there.

GOOD – KALOS- Nobel or honorable, good in quality

DEEDS-ERGON-works

After Paul instructs Titus to assert his leadership under the model of honorable works, he gives principles that help define “honorable works.”

Principles in:

1) Teaching accurately (with integrity)

2) Dignity

3) Sound speech

1) IN DOCTRINE –DIDASKALIA – teaching B.D. categorically

PURITY-“APHTHORIA”- Incapable of decay. Emphasizes integrity, especially integrity of content of what he teaches. (PURITY refers to the message). A P-T must be objective and relaxed about what he teaches.

(2) DIGNITY (GRAVITY-KJV)- “SEMNOPES”- This word refers to the person. (P-T) This word does not exclude a sense of humor! It means majestic as it relates to authority. To rule with flair. Poise, to keep cool under all kinds of pressure.

(3) SOUND IN SPEECH – Verse 8. This means to be accurate.

TITUS 2:8- SOUND IN SPEECH WHICH IS BEYONG REPROACH THAT THE OPPONENT MAY BE PUT TO SHAME HAVING NOTHING BAD (underhanded) TO SAY ABOUT YOU.

BEYOND REPROACH- “AKATAGNOSTOS”=non-condemnable

“THE OPPONENT”-Notice that P-Ts who teach the Word of God will have opposition. Forms of opposition:

1) People who live by their emotions and think their lifetime job is to straighten out the P-T.

2) People with approbation lust-They can’t stand for anyone else to get attention.

This type looks for the P-T’s weakness, then compares it with his own strength

and then tells everyone about it.

3) People with Power Lust- This type wants to get pushy with the P-T.

4) People with all types of MAS. Pride, jealously, vindictiveness,

implacability, hatred.

5) Inflexible people who have been stepped on by P-T’s message so they

retaliate against the P-T. This is actually negative volition toward B.D.

6) People who want programs and rituals (tongues) because that is what

they are used to.

7) unbelievers indwelt or influenced by demons to disrupt the church.

SUBJECTIVE OPPOSITION OBJECTIVE OPPOSITION

Motivated by MAS, Inflexable Honest, in the open, Flexable

(makes the P-T the issue) (The issue is the issue not the P-T)

NOT GOOD GOOD/profitable

"MAY BE PUT TO SHAME” In the sense of reversing “ENTREPO”—your position.

This does not mean that you gloat when you have taken the correct position.

POINT: If you wind up on the wrong side of an issue when you had honest opposition there is no need to be ashamed unless it wasn’t honest opposition. (Subjective, inflexible).

NOTHING BAD TO SAY (BAD-“PHAULOS”) A word for underhanded politics. People who have something bad to say about a P-T should read Isaiah 54.:17.
