HORTICULTURE THERAPY

TUESDAY, AUGUST 24 | 1:00PM

Horticultural Therapy is a type of therapy that uses gardening and nature-related activities to facilitate health and well-being. The notion that gardening is therapeutic is not a new one. Those of us who are gardeners have no difficulty enumerating the many benefits of working with plants. Through gardening and nature-related activities, we can experience self-expression and creativity. Join us for this Watermark University as we work with natural elements and flowers and create a piece of artwork.

OUT & ABOUT

Last month, residents from the Inn enjoyed a trip to the International Wildlife Museum. Founded in 1988, the museum highlights over 400 species of insects, mammals and birds from around the globe. Some of the collections are more then 100 years old and all the animals found at the museum were donated by various government agencies, wildlife rehabilitation centers, captive breeding programs and zoos. We "traveled" all around the world seeing and learning about many different types of wildlife. We were all amazed by the diverse exhibits. We all enjoyed our trip to this unique museum here in town. Join us for this month's outing to Ignite Sign Art Museum on Wednesday, August 4th. Make sure to reserve your spot by signing up at the Front Desk!

LIVING WELL

Here in Tucson we enjoy 300+ days of sunshine annually. All that ultraviolet exposure adds up. We experience the most UV exposure in our 60's and beyond. As a result, the chances of developing skin cancer increase as we age. Not exactly what you want to think about when stepping outside to soak up some beautiful sunshine! In our senior years, there are steps you can take to prevent damage and protect yourself from prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful rays. Wear sunscreen. Apply the right kind and the right amount of sunscreen. Look for sunscreen labeled "broad spectrum", with an SPF of at least 15. For extended outdoor activities SPF 30 is recommended. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to going outside. Examine your skin. Check your body head-to-toe every month. Look for new moles or spots that look different. Schedule a yearly skin check with your healthcare professional. Cover up. Covering up will further protect your skin from the sun. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts made out of breathable fabrics are good options. Wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers your entire head and ears. Wear UVblocking sunglasses to keep your face and eyes safe, too. Protect your skin all year round. Sun safety is especially important for us desert dwellers!
