Paparazzi and Celebrities

Beam, Alex. “Tabloid law: a report from the chaotic fringes of the First Amendment, where publicity collides with privacy and the check-out line leads to the courtroom” The Atlantic. Aug. 1999: 55-7, 60+. Popular Magazines. Web. Mar. 2011.

This article from The Atlantic discusses a trend of celebrities going after the tabloids who print confidential medical information or compromising, invasive photos of them. The article gives numerous examples of celebrities that have sued the tabloids after they have printed ruinous articles about them. This article is good source of information because it comes from the perspective of celebrities and the lawyers who represent them.

“Paparazzi (Special Report).” Encyclopedia Issues & Controversies. Facts on File,

News Services, September 1997. Web.29 March, 2011. Http:article/xn00200

Just the right photo at just the right time sold to tabloids or mass marketed periodicals can result in a paycheck of a million dollars or more to members of the paparazzi. However, questions concerning this business practice arise. For example, does the paparazzi contribute to celebrity accidents like the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed? Should editors and publishers continue to pay exorbitant fees for these pictures? What is the dividing line between celebrity privacy rights and freedom of the press? What role if any should governments play in regulating the way news is reported? This article includes objective points brought up by actual journalists and celebrities concerning privacy issues.
