“Recognition and validation of informal and non-formal learning for VET Teachers and Trainers”

Brussels, 5 November 2004

By Maria José Janardo

General objective of the Workshop: To contribute to the follow-up work programmes of the Copenhagen Declaration and of the Concrete Objectives for Education and Training in Europe in the field of recognition and validation of informal and non-formal learning – TTnet project/study in the field.

The study aims at providing an overview of the approaches and methodologies implemented at national level on this issue, to analyse good examples of practice from the TTnet countries participating in the project (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Slovakia, Lithuania, United Kingdom) and to identify common transnational issues and formulate recommendations to be addressed to policy-makers.

Specific objectives:

• to present and discuss the preliminary report on the overview of the approaches and methodologies implemented in the TTnet countries on the recognition and validation of informal and non-formal learning for VET teachers and trainers.

• to discuss and agree on the grid for collecting and analysing the examples of practice to be provided by TTnet countries;

• to agree on the calendar for next phases of the TTnet study in this field.

Main Conclusions:

• There was a general agreement on the need to clarify concepts and terminology, since the common European principles for the identification and validation of non-formal and informal learning are quite general.

• The need to respect the different national approaches when setting up common principles and criteria on the field of the study was highlighted by all participants.

• The interim report of the study, including the final grid for collecting and analysing the examples of practice to be provided by TTnet countries will be presented at the TTnet Annual Conference 2004 where a specific session will be devoted to this project.

• On the basis of the final grid, the TTnet countries participating in the study will submit at least two good examples of practice in the above field from their own countries.

• The countries, which do not have any example of practice (being) implemented in their national context, will have the possibility to formulate proposals on new practices/initiatives to be launched in their countries.

• A final report of the study is expected in July 2005.
