Required: Stickney, C.P. and Weil, R.L., FINANCIAL ACCCOUNTING: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods, and Uses, 13th Edition, The Dryden Press HCP Publishers, San Diego, (SW) If the University's Schedule of Classes indicates a later edition of the textbook, please drop me an email. The publishers don't inform me when the edition changes. You may use an older version of the textbook (saves you some money).

Required: Granof, M.H., GOVERNMENT AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT ACCOUNTING: Concepts and Practices, John Wiley & Sons, New York, 5th Edition

Students may use older editions of the textbooks and save compared to the cost of a new textbook.

ABSTRACT: To help non-accounting students make sense out of measuring results of business activities, and the aggregate measurement in the form of financial statements. Class will include discussion of the relationship of course material to relevant current events in private industry, non-profits, and government accounting.

OBJECTIVES:

Practical understanding of theories and practices of financial and governmental accounting. Purpose and content of the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows, fund accounting, appropriations, and budgets. Uses of financial accounting reports, accounting standards, and financial reporting. Development of analytical skills necessary for analyzing financial information and managing fiscal operations.

HOMEWORK: Reading assignments and problems are expected to be completed before the indicated class session. Homework problems completed in a timely manner each week are an essential part of any accounting course. Please make a photocopy of your homework solutions so you may retain a copy for active class participation. Late homework (after midnight on date due) will receive no credit. If you are unable to attend class, you may submit your homework via email. Please put your name and the homework chapter number on your homework. Do not put your Social Security Number on your homework (beware identity theft).

GRADING: (Weighting is approximate)

Homework/attendance 10%

Test One & Two 30% each

Final 30%

Tests will be temporarily returned for review the class period after a test, but collected back from students that same class period.
