Part A

Who is it for?

MonaLisa Touch is a medical treatment option that addresses the common vaginal and vulvar discomforts associated with menopause and lichen sclerosus. MonaLisa Touch is appropriate for women whether they have gone through natural menopause or had their ovaries removed surgically.

What does MonaLisa Touch treat?

The MonaLisa Touch is a proven effective treatment for Vulvovaginal Atrophy and the Genitourinary Symptoms of Menopause (GSM). These symptoms commonly include:

Vaginal dryness

Painful intercourse (Dyspareunia)

Vulvar itching and/or burning

Painful urination or frequent urinary tract infections

Stress incontinence

Urge incontinence

50% of women experience some, or all, of these symptoms within a few years of menopause. These issues can affect a woman's quality of life, both physically and emotionally. MonaLisa Touch is designed to specifically address these common and distressing symptoms. MonaLisa Touch treatments are simple and effective, allowing you to feel like yourself again.

MonaLisa Touch is a new treatment specifically designed to address the common symptoms of menopause, and restore gynecologic health.

Lichen Sclerosus

MonaLisa Touch has also been used to treat lichen sclerosus, a skin condition affecting the vulva, creating patchy white skin that is thin. The common symptoms are itch, pain and painful intercourse. Sometimes the skin is so thin that it will crack and bleed. For many women affected with lichen sclerosus, use of a potent steroid cream can put it into remission for various periods of time, but need for continued treatment is common. Intermittent Mona Lisa Touch treatments can keep lichen sclerosus under control and reduce the need for steroid use.

Why does this happen?

During menopause, when a woman's ovaries stop producing estrogen, the effects on a woman's sexual organs are rapid and profound.

The lack of estrogen causes the vagina to become shorter and narrower. The skin of the vagina becomes thinner and loses its ability to produce normal lubrication leading to painful intercourse. The same process is happening to the skin on the vulva and the tissues around the bladder.

Within 2-3 years of menopause, at least 50% of women notice reduced lubrication in their vagina; that intercourse has become painful; that their vulva is dry and itchy, and; they more frequently leak urine, get strong urges to urinate and have to get up at night to urinate when they never had to before.

All of these effects are due to the dramatic reduction of estrogen after menopause.

Why MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is an innovative laser for gynecologic use. It is embraced by hundreds of experts in female pelvic health and premier academic institutions. The medical evidence about the MonaLisa Touch to date has been consistently positive.

Since 2012, millions of women have opted for MonaLisa Touch treatment because of its appealing advantages, such as:

Procedures are performed in-office Requires no anesthesia No downtime for recovery Minimal side effects Each treatment is under 5 minutes Positive effects are long lasting

How does MonaLisa Touch work?

MonaLisa Touch is an in-office procedure performed by a gynecologist. MonaLisa Touch delivers gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall tissue that stimulates a healing response by generating new collagen, elastin and blood flow. It's pain free, non-surgical, and treatments take only a few minutes. MonaLisa Touch uses fractional laser technology to ablate small microcolumns of tissue. This leaves an ecosystem of healthy unaffected tissue to support rapid healing. A typical course of treatment is three procedures over 8 weeks. Each treatment takes less than five minutes to perform. After the first series, women return for a single treatment on an annual basis.

Does MonaLisa Touch really work?

In both European and US clinical trials, women reported symptom relief after the very first treatment and even greater improvement after the second and third treatments. There have been numerous studies on the effectiveness of MonaLisa Touch, including those referenced here.

Below are the results from two different studies. Figure 1 shows the results from a group of menopausal women after 3 treatments. Figure 2 is from a study using the MonaLisa Touch to treat the vulvar and vaginal symptoms of breast cancer survivors and showed very similar results after just one treatment. Because the MonaLisa Touch only uses laser light and is non-hormonal, women with breast cancer can undergo treatment without the worry that it will impact their risk of the cancer returning.
