Three Years of Initial Licensure in North Carolina

ILT Requirements for Year 1

• *Participate in a GCS New Teacher Orientation

• *Participate in the GCS Right Start Seminars (a minimum of 10 hours required.) Three seminars will be system wide meeting and the others will be in your school. (See Right Start Seminar Schedule)

• Earn 2 CEUs and register your participation on the GCS Professional Development Site. (If you register for orientation (1 CEU) and Right Start Seminars (1 CEU), you will have earned the 2.0 CEUs for your first year.)

• Have a mentor and a buddy teacher

• Develop an Individual Growth Plan (IGP)

• Be evaluated by your administrator(s) a minimum of 3 observations, culminating with a summative evaluation

• Be evaluated by a peer teacher (not your mentor)

• Retain copies of all observation form (FODA) on all observations, the summative evaluation, IGP, mentor log and documentation of professional growth activities.

• Continue to have a mentor teacher

As indicated above, continuing professional licensure will be granted when the ILT has successfully completed all state requirements, has completed three years of teaching in your licensure area, and the designated local official has notified the Department of public Instruction that there is no reason due to character or conduct that the ILT should not receive licensure to teach in North Carolina

Teaching is a licensed profession. As a professional, you are required to take responsibility for your licensure requirements.
