May/June 2018

Save The Date!! – Cloverbud Fun Day!

We will be having a “Cloverbud Fun Day” on July 28, 2018. More information will be available at a later date!

Join Us for a Day of Discovery on Lake Erie – Registration due May 15

On June 7, 4-H youth and volunteers will spend the day learning about Lake Erie and the islands within. We will visit The Ohio State University’s Stone Lab on Gibraltar Island. Stone Lab is a freshwater field station that oversees programs that have introduced thousands – from elementary students to adults – to the basics of field-based biological science.

Several science activities will fill our day! We will take a 2-hour Science Cruise aboard a research vessel, where students will measure current environmental conditions, sample algae and plankton, and collect and identify Lake Erie fish. Their samples will then go to the lab to be analyzed by the youth and volunteers.

Participants will also collect macroinvertebrates using kick seines and dip nets and then look at their water samples under a dissecting scope to determine local water quality.

We will see live and preserved specimens and photos of a variety of Ohio’s reptiles and amphibians and learn about current snake research underway at Stone Lab, which has been featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs.”

The cost is $30 per person which includes transportation (charter bus from Mt. Gilead to Port Clinton and a Ferry to Put-in-Bay), lunch, and fees for Stone Lab activities. Twenty-two 4-H members and volunteers are already registered! Only 55 spots are available so don’t delay…register today!

To register, go to:

Looking for Teens to Lead Commodity Carnival

We are looking for teens to be leaders of the Commodity Carnival program that’s coming to the Morrow County Fair!

What is Commodity Carnival? CME Group and the National 4-H Council partnered to create the Commodity Carnival, a fun learning activity for students to experience managing the business risks associated with producing and bringing livestock to market. The game aims to build greater literacy in agricultural science and economics at state and county fairs.

The Commodity Carnival consists of three activities that guide participants through the process of producing and selling livestock: grow your livestock, sell your livestock and win a ribbon. This year, participants will grow and sell a hog.

So what’s in it for you? Due to a grant received, a club (teens must oversee) or teenagers can be awarded money for their leadership given during the program.  If a club chooses to oversee the program the club can raise $250. If it becomes five individual teens, each teen will raise $50 each. Each teen will be expected to attend a one hour training session and at least two of the three Commodity Carnival programs. The Commodity Carnival will take place during the market beef show (Wednesday, 4:00-7:00 p.m.), market hog show (Saturday, 4:00-7:00 p.m.), and the market livestock sale (Monday, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.).

Contact Amanda Forquer, forquer.13@osu.edu, by July 1 if interested in being involved with Commodity Carnival.

Club Project Book Support

With the increased cost of project books at the state level from $3.00 to $6.00, we were once again able to give our members a discount, thanks to the generous donation of over $1,200 from Central Ohio Farmers Cooperative and the Land O' Lakes Foundation.  This is still a very big donation and we would like to thank them for their generosity.  Please take a moment and send them a thank you card or take a thank you poster to the Mt. Gilead branch.  You can send thank you's to:

Central Ohio Farmers Co-op Inc., Attn: Phil Hulse, P.O. Box 152, Mt. Gilead, Ohio 43338

and

Central Ohio Farmers Co-op Inc./Land O' Lakes Foundation, 730 Bellefountaine, Marion, OH 43302

What's 4-H Still Project Judging Like?

1.  Make sure you have all the requirements for your project(s). These requirements were inserted in your project book or can be found at the Morrow County website: .

2. Dress and present yourself neatly and clean.  Clothing projects are required to wear their clothing projects at judging.

3.  Arrive to the judging location at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time.

4.  After arriving, check in with the Jr. Fair Board and follow their directions.

5.  Once to the judging table, introduce yourself to the judge.  They will ask you

questions about your project.  Be prepared to tell the judge all the things you learned and did.  The judge can't read your mind! The more you can tell and show what you have learned the better.

6.  Once the judge is done with your interview, they will give written comments and give you a grade of A, B, or C.  You may be eligible for other awards, but they will not be announced until later in the newsletter.

7.  Once you have been judged you are free to leave.  Clothing projects will need to be judged as a project group for regular judging and attend the evening Style Review to be eligible for State Fair.

If you have any other questions about judging ask your club advisor or contact the Extension Office.

Junior Leaders

The Junior Leaders meet the last Monday of June and July at the Extension Office from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Our next event that we are planning will be the “Annual Mo-Mazing Chase”. Look for how to enter below and join in on this fun event!

It would be great to have more of you, 7th grade through 18 years of age, join us and help expand on what we can accomplish.

The definition of a leader according to the dictionary is “one who leads”. Pretty simple but doesn’t say much. I think a leader is one that steps forward when a volunteer is asked for; one that expresses ideas and opinions to help better those around them as well as themselves; one that gathers others around to accomplish a task or tasks; one that can laugh at themselves when something they do may not turn out but does not laugh or condemn others and cause dismay if it happens to them. There are a lot more definitions of a leader and I hope you are thinking of them right now.

Come join us and show what kind of leader you are and hope to become.

MoMazing Chase 2018 - Saturday, August 11, 2018 beginning at 9 a.m.

The date has been set and the Mo-Mazing Chase will be coming around in August. This is such a fun event and the kids love chasing around Mt. Gilead. It is planned and conducted by the Junior Leaders and we hope that you as a club, family or friends will get together and join in.

It takes about an hour and a half and we try to plan at least one place to chase after that you may not be very familiar with. Of course, there are six or seven other places to find as well.

For full rules and entry forms, contact Carol at ottercreekfarm2@ or 419-947-1288.

2018 National Pygmy Goat Convention

The Ohio Pygmy Goat Association will be hosting the 2018 National Pygmy Goat Convention

on June 15-17, 2018 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds in Wooster, Ohio. We will be having a

Youth Pygmy Goat Show on Friday the 15th and all youth are welcome to show their registered

or unregistered pygmy goats in all classes. Our Showmanship Judge will be Jim Wilson of Wilson

Family Farm. Mr. Wilson has judged innumerable fairs in Ohio and surrounding states. Our

breed classes will be judged by Kelly Culp of Springwater Farm. Ms. Culp has been an NPGA

licensed Pygmy Goat judge for many years.

Check-in for this show is Thursday June 14 from 4-8pm or Friday June 15 from 8-9am. Check -

in is when an exhibitor gives their goats’ class list (s) to the show chair so the goat(s) can be

placed in the proper age group. Early entry for check-in can be mailed or emailed but the

exhibitor must still check-in with the show chair during those hours. Please send no money for

early entries! Pay when you check-in. Early entries save us time by allowing us to write your

goats into classes days before the show rather than that morning. They are appreciated but not

mandatory.

Prizes will be awarded for some class placements, special Convention place ribbons awarded

for first through fifth, and special Convention rosettes for reserve champions and champions.

This is an excellent opportunity for ALL youth, 4H NPGA and pygmy goat lovers, to participate in

a National Convention setting and meet some of the top breeders and judges of the nation.

Friday night at 7pm is our National Champion Challenge where the National Champion Wether,

Doe and Buck will be chosen by NPGA judges attending this Convention. We invite the youth

show participants to tour the barns that day where the National Champion Contenders are

stalled and guess who will be the winners. A card will be provided for this purpose, one per

youth show exhibitor. A gift card will be mailed to the winners. You need not attend the 7pm

Challenge to win.

Please make plans to attend. Show starts at 9am with Showmanship and check-in before

then. Early entries are greatly appreciated and help move the show along in a timely manner.

Stalls are available at cost or show off your trailer. For complete information go to npgapygmy.

com and click on the 2018 Convention barn logo to view the website, click on and

download the showbills and entry forms.

Any questions or concerns please contact Sheryl Howard at esfpygmygoat@ We

hope to see you there!

Exhibitors Should Practice 4-H Pledge This Time of Year

By:  Dr. Tony Forshey, DVM, Chief, Ohio Division of Animal Health

If you ask most 4-H exhibitors, I bet they can recite the 4-H Pledge without hesitation. It’s a great motto for young people to use in their daily lives. There’s one part that’s very important to public health leaders like myself, “and my health to better living…”

Healthy people and animals are my concern at the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Our Division of Animal Health works to safeguard the health of all animals in Ohio and the people with whom they come in contact. Animals can carry diseases like influenza, cryptosporidium and salmonella that can be transmitted to humans, but can also be easily prevented with proper biosecurity steps like proper hand washing. This time of year, this message is especially critical to 4-H exhibitors preparing for this summer’s county and independent fairs. The next few weeks and months are when boys and girls across Ohio will choose the animals they take as 4-H projects. For many, this includes a visit to a farm to pick out their animal and then transporting it back to their home. This is an important time for 4-Hers to remember their pledge and practice simple, yet important, biosecurity measures.

Any and every time someone touches an animal, they should wash their hands. Exhibitors shouldn't wear barn shoes or clothes in their house. If a trip to check out a steer, or buy a pig includes a visit to another farm, wash clothes and shoes or wear disposable boots and coveralls. 4-H exhibitors should always have a relationship with a veterinarian and if their new project shows any signs of illness, contact that vet right away.

Ohio’s county and independent fairs and the 4-H projects showcased there are a magnificent part of our state’s agricultural heritage and future. The young people who dedicate months to raise an animal are the future of Ohio’s largest industry, food and agriculture. I want all exhibitors to be able to practice what they say in the 4-H Pledge (and my health to better living) and urge 4-Hers young and old to remember biosecurity as they find their animals and start their journey this fair season.

Are you a 4-H Grown Alum?

In 4-H, we believe in the power of America’s youth to succeed in life; however, only one in three kids say they have the skills they need to handle what life throws their way. That’s why 4-H created “Raise Your Hand.” A nationwide call to action for alumni to "raise their hands" to empower our nation's youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime. Help us grow the next generation of True Leaders—because every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Raise your hand to pay it forward at  raise-your-hand

Raise Your Hand, it doesn’t cost a thing and the State with the most Alumni this spring will get $20,000 to use towards 4-H programming.
