This bachelor¡¯s degree program prepares students to teach in the elementary grades of K-8. Satisfactory completion of the

program in Elementary Education qualifies a student for a Michigan Elementary Provisional Certificate, which is valid for

teaching kindergarten through grade five and major and minor fields in grades six, seven and eight, and self-contained

grades six, seven and eight.

For admissions requirements into the Elementary Education program, students should refer to Teacher Selection and

Retention Standards in the NMU Bulletin. Requirements include:

A cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher in undergraduate-level college credits;

At least 24 credits in Liberal Studies courses outside of a student¡¯s major and minor with a GPA of 2.50 or higher;

A satisfactory score on the Pre-Professional Screening Test (PPST). The PPST is waived for students who have

ACT sub-scores of 21 in English and reading and a sub-score of 20 in Mathematics or SAT scores of verbal 450

and mathematics 500;

A passing score on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills tests; and

Successfully complete the pre-methods education courses (ED 201, ED 230, and ED 301), MA 150, and MA 151.

Students can fulfill NMU¡¯s world cultures requirement by completing one of the following while at College of

At least one course in the Liberal Studies Program must be at the 300-level or above. This requirement can be

completed before attending the university if the transfer student selects a course that transfers at that level. At

College of Lake County, the following courses meet this requirement: ENG 223, ENG 228, ENG 229, ENG 263.
