Memo - Northern York County School District

March 27, 2020Dear Families of Elementary Students,I wanted to provide you with an update of where things stand in Northern York County School District in regards to the school closures due to the COVID-19 virus. We just received word this afternoon, that Governor Wolf has signed into law the bill that passed unanimously in both the State Senate and the State House of Representatives providing some much-needed relief and guidance to school districts. I want to thank our local legislators for their efforts. While those of us in governmental positions are often criticized for how slowly things move, the passage of this bill shows that, in times of crisis, we can work together to do what is best for our constituents. As part of this new law, the Governor has waived the requirement that students must be in school for 180 days. The law also indicates that each school district must provide a Continuity of Education Plan and communicate that via our websites. Northern’s administration is working with our staff to formulate a plan that is specific to Northern, its students, and its families. We will be communicating with you in the near future as to what the plan looks like and what expectations we have for child’s learning. Based on the?Northern York County School District calendar, students would return to school on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.? The return date may need to be revised as we learn more from the Department of Education.? We continue to plan for both a return to school on this date as well as a plan for remote learning should the closure be extended. The elementary principals asked that I share the following message from them.We appreciate the partnership that has formed between home and school during this challenging time of school closures. We are eager to have our students back in school, but the health and safety of all members of our community is paramount. The return date for students is scheduled for April 14th, which is after the previously scheduled Easter break. Many factors are in play that may affect this return date, but at this time, we want to focus on providing families with enrichment learning activities, and to continue the home and school partnership that we established. We value this critically important partnership, and we want to support our students in maintaining their academic, emotional, and social learning while school is not in session. Our teachers and faculty are collaborating using the on-line conferencing options throughout this closure. Resources are posted on the school’s website to serve as a guide during this time. The teachers are working with administrators and instructional coaches to develop an engaging resource that offers choice to families depending on their individual situations. Please check your e-mail for resources and other important school communications to go out next week.We have made the following decisions based on the two-week school closure extension:The third marking period will end on April 9, and report cards will be posted to the portal on April 20. No assignments will be counted toward a grade after March 13th.Kindergarten Registration that was scheduled for April 4th is postponed (date TBD)All field trips scheduled in April are cancelled.Grade 2 and Grade 4 Swimming is cancelled for this yearAll 4th grade trips to Philadelphia are cancelledWe recognize that missing valued field trips and experiences is disappointing. The united efforts from the families, teachers, staff, and community is truly remarkable. We are in this together as we support one another for the benefit of our children. As we prepare for the future, we ask that you take time to complete the Elementary Technology Access Survey found at the following link. We ask that you complete the survey by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2020. do not hesitate to email teachers and principals about any questions you have. We wish you the best of health and continue to be committed to our goal of keeping all students safe, well, and progressing in their education.Sincerely,6244173958200Eric C. Eshbach, Ed.D.Superintendent ................
