Baker City, Oregon

History is everywhere you look in downtown Baker City with over 110 buildings and homes on the National Register of Historic Places. The Geiser Grand Hotel was built in 1889 and enjoyed a reputation as the finest hotel between Salt Lake City and Seattle. The hotel has been restored to its original elegance, including a stained glass ceiling over the Palm court which is the largest in the Pacific Northwest.  Tours of the Geiser Grand are given on Saturdays at 2 p.m. in the summer by the Historical Society.

McKenzie Pass info:

The McKenzie Pass - Santiam Pass National Scenic Byway loop road is one of the most beautiful drives in Oregon. It winds through some of the most recent volcanic flows in the state past many waterfalls, and is home to the Dee Wright Observatory. This CCC project, built mostly out of lava rock in the 1930s, has breath-taking views of Mt. Washington, Mt. Jefferson, the Three Sisters, and, on clear days, Mt. Hood.

Lighthouses we visited:

Cape Meares Lighthouse:

Octopus Tree

Coquille River Lighthouse (this was at the windy spot at Bullards Beach State Park

Originally built in 1896, the Coquille River Lighthouse is located at the mouth of the Coquille river to mark a dangerous bar at the entrance. The lumber business was thriving in the early 1900's and ships came to Bandon to load up with lumber. Despite the presence of the lighthouse, the bar was so treacherous that many schooners went down: among them, the Onward Westward Home (in 1904), the Del Norte (in 1905), the Randoph (in 1915), the E. L. Smith (in 1935), the Golden West (in 1936).

The lighthouse tower stands 40 feet tall, made of brick and covered with an outer layer of stucco. The attached cottage is octagonal. The fourth-order Fresnel lens burned for over forty years at which time the Coast Guard took the lighthouse out of service (1939). It was neglected for approximately fifty years and has been recently restored as a major attraction in Bullards Beach State Park. The park is located off Highway 101 near Bandon. The lighthouse is open daily in the summer. At other times, you can get a fine view looking across the river from Bandon.
