Remember that you will remember vocabulary words better if you study them for a short amount of time every night than if you study for a long amount of time at the last minute!

____ 3. A. This chapter introduces a new form — 3rd declension adjectives. We have already seen first and second declension adjectives like bonus, a, um. These adjectives can be used to modify nouns of all 3 declensions.

Examples:

1. puella bona 5. puer bonus

2. villae bonae 6. caupo bonus

3. servī bonī 7. pars bona

4. caelum bonum 8. itinera bona

Identifying the GNC - Gender, Number and Case of an adjective helps you determine which noun that adjective modifies, especially if a noun/adjective pair does not match in declension.

List the declension of each noun and the GNC of the noun/adjective pairs listed above.

1. __________________________ 5. __________________________

2. __________________________ 6. __________________________

3. __________________________ 7. __________________________

4. __________________________ 8. __________________________

Just like you cannot change the conjugation of a verb or the declension of a noun, you cannot change the declension of an adjective. All adjectives are either

1. first & second declension or

2. third declension

Several 3rd declension adjectives have already been used in your text:

omnis each/all brevis short

incolumis safe, unhurt qualis? what kind of?

immobilis motionless fortis brave, strong

Now you must memorize the 3rd declension adjective paradigm with its variations (or mutations!). The good news is that the masculine and feminine have identical forms. The following endings, however, need special attention:

ablative singular ends in ī genitive plural ends in ium

neuter nominative/accusative plural ends in ia

How do these endings differ from those of 3rd declension nouns?

Third declension nouns have

ablative singulars ending in ________ genitive plurals ending in ________

neuter nominative/accusative plurals ending in ________

Remember: Latin noun/adjective pairs agree in GNC:

Gender (masculine/feminine/neuter)

Number (singular/plural)

Case (nominative/accusative/genitive/ablative)

Latin noun/adjective pairs do not necessarily have the same declension number, so they may or may not look alike.

Exempla: brevī tempore villa vicina omne baculum servī laborantēs

• Which noun/adjective pairs are identical and which are fraternal?

• To what declension does each word belong?

B. Use the chart on p. 138 in your text as a guide to do the following:

____ 4. A. Read “BUILDING THE MEANING Nouns and Adjectives: Agreement II” on pages 139-140 of your text. REMEMBER: there are five clues which help you decide which noun an adjective modifies in a sentence:

GENDER, NUMBER, CASE, SENSE & POSITION

Use these clues to complete the following exercise.

Given Latin sentences:

1. Label each verb with a V; list its number (singular/plural) above it.

2. Circle each adjective and list its GNC – gender, number, and case.

If there is more than one possibility for GNC list both possibilities (in other words, if an adjective form might be either nominative or accusative in forms, list both of these).

3. Draw an arrow from each adjective to the noun it modifies.

4. Translate sentences.

I. CASE will give you the clues for the noun/adjective agreement in these sentences. See the glossary at the end of this section if necessary:

1. Aurelia unam filiam habet.

2. Cornelius unum filium habet.

3. Mater bonam puellam laudat.

4. Mater molestam ancillam videt.

5. Pater hospitem praeclarum revocat.

6. Marcus canem malum agnoscit.

8. Lupus malus puerum timet.

9. Servus ferocem dominum irritat.

10. Canis molestus puerum vexat.

11. Sextus ignavus lupum repellit.

12. Marcus magnus ramum arripit.

laudat, h/s praises irritat, h/s provokes ferox, ferocis, cruel (adj.)

1. Mater altum montem videt.

3. Cornelia fragorem magnum audit.

4. Canis molestus ancillam vexat.

5. Aurelia unum filium habet.

6. Cornelius unam filiam habet.

7. Marcus ignavus Flaviam amat.

8. Sextus molestus arborem petit.

9. Marcus infirmam arborem ascendit.

10. Puella bona canem videt.

altus, -a, -um, high (adj.)

III. NUMBER and CASE will give you the clues for noun/adjective agreement in these sentences:

1. Mater bonās puellās laudat.

2. Mater molestās ancillās videt.

3. Pater hospitēs praeclarōs revocat.

4. Marcus canēs malōs agnoscit.

Raeda in fossā haerēbat.

Ecce, Sexte! Caudās movent.”

Eō ipsō tempore ad ianuam cauponae apparuit homō obesus quī canes revocavit.

“Salvēte, hospitēs!” inquit. “In cauponā meā pernoctāre vultis? Hīc multī civēs praeclarī pernoctāvērunt. Olim hic pernoctāvit etiam legatus principis.”

“Salvē, mī Apollodōre!” interpellāvit Eucleides. “Quid agis?”

“Mehercule!” respondit caupō. “Nisi errō, meum amicum Eucleidem agnosco.”

“Non erras,” inquit Eucleides. “Laetus tē video. Quod raeda dominī meī in fossā haeret immobilis, necesse est hīc in cauponā pernoctāre.”

“Doleo,” inquit caupo, “quod raeda est in fossā, sed gaudeo quod ad meam cauponam nunc venitis. Intrāte, intrāte omnēs!”
